What's up with Chloe?

by Meredith O'Brien, posted Apr 18th 2007 6:42PM

Chloe O'Brian on 24Normally, Chloe O'Brian is Jack Bauer's go-to gal on 24.

Jack needs to be patched through to someone? No problem. She'll take care of it in a jiffy.

Need the schematics of a nuclear weapon. Right away.

Need her to lie to her superiors so you can conduct a rogue operation to save the world? She's got your back . . . usually.

So what was up with Chloe this past week? After not much pressure from her ex-husband, a frowning Chloe ratted out Jack's clandestine plan -- to give the Chinese a component from one of the Russian suitcase nukes in exchange for Audrey Raines' release -- to CTU boss Bill Buchanan.

This seemed out of character. This didn't seem like the same woman who, at the beginning of season five, had kept secret the knowledge that Jack was alive. This didn't seem like the same woman who Tasered a guy -- TWICE! -- in a bar last year.

In previous seasons, Chloe had been Jack's reliable soldier, which is why it struck me as surprising that Chloe would inform Buchanan of Jack's plans to save Audrey, someone with whom Chloe had worked. And just a little harassment from Morris "Drill-Bit" O'Brian caused her to cave? Couldn't she have threatened to expose his drinking if he informed Buchanan about Jack's scheme? That's what the season five Chloe would have done.

I didn't buy it. What do you think?

What about the "Wet List" last year? Chloe told Bill and Karen about that, and didn't put up much of a fight.

And Morris was about to call security, so Chloe had no choice but to tell him. And once she told Morris, Bill was going to find out.

Finally, this mission is one of the riskiest ones Jack has ever tried to carry out. He was asking a LOT from Chloe to risk WW3!!!

I agree with C C: there is a weird amount of emotional tension when Jack and Chloe are together. Although, i think it has nothing to do with a sexual tension. I would say that they have a relationship yet to be discovered, and that relationship is very strong. I would suggest that Chloe and Jack are brother and sister. And no, CC, they did not sleep together, we're not in Alabama or something...

Merideth, you are usually so good, I'm disappointed you could be SO off the mark this time. Oh, well, no one is perfect.

Your first poster, LC, got things exactly right: Morris was giving Chloe an ultimatum: tell Buchanan yourself, or I will. And as to Chloe blackmailing him: Morris made it completely clear, he wouldn't risk having the deaths of tens of thousands of people on his conscience -- so attempted blackmail would have driven him straight to Buchanan even faster!

C'mon Merideth, think about it. And while you're at it, recognize that this wasn't your usual "Jack saving the world" routine: he was doing it to save HIS GIRlFRIEND. That puts Chloe's actions in a completely different, and much worse, light. She was helping Jack commit treason for personal reasons, not to help his country. No wonder Morris was ticked. And no wonder Buchanan reacted the way he did as soon as he found out.

Methinks, Merideth, that maybe you're developing a bit of a crush on Jack, and that it's starting to blur your judgement. Either that, or you just like getting us posters all cranked up.

After all, if Jack found out someone else was doing the very treasonous things he's currently up to, he'd bludgeon, strangle, stab, electrocute, drown, suffocate and shoot them -- and then he'd get really mad.

Nola-thank you. People are making too much out of this. People are whining "Where's Chloe?" "This isn't the Chloe we know!" She's there. She may not be zapping people with a taser, but she's still a presence.

Ditto to what LC and Nola have already said. In addition to that, we're forgetting that Chloe has re-united with Morris and actually does love him; before she was untethered to anything or anyone else but Jack. But now she has other commitments (like her relationship with Morris) and she can't just act like a (forgive me) rogue anymore; she is having to learn to act a bit more wisely. Which is exactly why doing that was so hard for her...she didn't want to, but not only did she have to, she was making the choice to start acting in accordance with her other priorities as well as her undying loyalty to Jack.

I think you're all making a big deal out of nothing. Chloe didn't just cave and betray Jack. Morris said plainly that he had done something to his computer after Nadia's terminal got hacked, to safeguard against unauthorized access. He was about to make a big deal about it, especially since he'd realized what had been accessed, and it would have been a matter of minutes, before he figured out that they had been sent somewhere.

Not to mention cameras around the place that could replay who'd been at his terminal.

Chloe had no choice. Whether she told or Morris told, it would have been revealed. It's not like she just blabbed to Morris cause he looked at her funny and with no cause. At least this way she didn't end up getting arrested.

Seriously, pay attention to the show, that way there won't be a need for unnecessary posts like this that make a big deal out of nothing.

I may be reading too much into this, but there was a scene earlier this season that did make me wonder. I don't know if anyone else saw that when Jack returned to CTU, and he walked up to Chloe, there was a visible moment of sexual tension. It wasn't overt, but sparks appeared to be flying. I never dreamed the writers would consider putting them together. Then again, who knows? I'm not going to say this is definitely about to happen, but don't be surprised if it's revealed at the end of this season or at the beginning of the next that Jack and Chloe are a couple. It may explain, to a certain degree, why the writers have restrained Chloe this season.

Yes it was completely out of character, she could & usually would have never done so, and rather indeed told about Morris' drinking problem.
But writers needed to bring back the White House into play, so once again they didn't really care about things such as continuity or plot... that's all.

Chloe's sudden character transformation and lack of airtime this year can partially be attributed to the plotline. But I think the producers are letting the actress have some time off to pursue some other projects since she's a "star" now. She's been doing some stand-up, and she just filmed a movie.
