Fox is Racer X

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 20th 2007 3:02PM

matthew foxMatthew Fox of Lost has joined the cast of the upcoming Speed Racer movie as Racer X.

FOX joins previously cast Christina Ricci (Trixie); Emile Hirsch (Speed); and John Goodman and Susan Sarandon (Speed's parents). The new movie will be helmed by the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix), and will begin shooting this summer (while Lost is on break) for a May 2008 release.

I'll admit I don't pay as much attention to movie scuttlebutt as I do television, but based on the rumblings about this movie I've caught here and there, it sounds like it could be pretty cool: an amplified, effects-laden version of the '60s cartoon. I imagine that, not unlike the Matrix movies, it'll be something that needs to be seen on the bigscreen.

Edit: Meant to say that the casting of Fox was one that most geeks would NOT have considered.

Agreed, the casting has been excellent for this so far. When I first read about Fox getting the role of Racer X, I thought what an excellent and well-thought-out choice that was, and one that most in the geekosphere would have considered. (Keanu was the most obvious, especially since he's worked with the Wachoskis before.) This also sounds like it will be a fun role to see Fox in -- he's good but has been cast in so many angst-laden roles (which includes LOST).

I would have preferred to see Keannu Reeves in the role, rather than Fox!

My goodness, the casting for Speed Racer is stellar! John Goodman as Pops, Matthew Fox as Racer X, Susan Sarandon as the mother (who really didn't get much exposure in the cartoon). It's looking really good so far!

This makes me worry if Jack is going to get written off Lost. I was reading this article about Cynthia Watros (from last year) and they were talking about how when regulars get movie roles that it might mean a death. Plus, episodes 22-23 on Lost are Jack-centered. Uh oh.

Point of order: Racer X isn't Speed Racer's arch-enemy, but rather Speed's long-lost brother, Rex Racer, who assumed the identity of Racer X after a dispute with his father, Pops Racer, following a race in which Rex crashed his car.
