First it was The Jacksons, now it's The Menudos

Menudo is returning in a reality seriesLate last week we reported that The Jackson family, sans Michael and Janet, were developing their own American Idol-style reality program titled Pop Dynasty. Now it turns out that another musical group is returning for an, um, American Idol-style reality program. Does anyone have an original thought in their minds out there?

The group is Menudo. You remember them, don't you? They were the 80's boy band that introduced the world to Ricky Martin. They were also famous for rotating their band members out when they got older or their voices changed. Kind of like a pop-rock Logan's Run. The old members of the band aren't reuniting. Instead, according to USA Today, seven boys are being picked from around the country to star in the new series The Road to Menudo. Hey, wasn't that the last Bing Crosby-Bob Hope road film?

Candidates are being judged by Johnny Wright, who managed the mega-boy bands New Kids on the Block, 'NSync and the Backstreet Boys, as well Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough. The show will begin airing next month on MTV Tr3s, MTV's bilingual Latin-American channel.

I don't know if this new Menudo group is going to catch on. The boy band craze went away 5 years ago and people are more into other kinds of music like the collaboration kind, rap artists, the hip-hop/R&B hybrid music and what Nickelback and Daughtry are doing with rock. And anyone that came off of American Idol with their freestanding major-label albums. I don't think that people are into the choreographed kind of boy band group like we all were with rival groups Backstreet Boys and NSYNC back in 1999, 2000 and 2001. They even kept the two groups apart at major awards shows--their bodyguards wouldn't let them see each other. They might have some success, but they need to have the total package to really catch on in a very competitive music scene. And lastly, nobody should copy American Idol! They should have their own approach with how they select the singers from the group. Last time another show copied Idol, they were yanked off the network after 2 WEEKS! That was the low-rated The One last year. So this Menudo search better do well, or it will end up on the chopping block.

If this is the comeback of the millennium we've been waiting
for with Menudo, I'm going to join this bandwagon as a last
resort, should Britney Spears' next album become a flop.
The public probably won't buy the newest version of Menudo,
since Ricky Martin isn't involved in the reality show as the host.
Whether they will be as big or bigger than N-Sync or The
Backstreet Boys today, that remains to be seen. Never mind
that none of my picks for the next Menudo will win, anyway,
but I will vote for whoever wins on Pop Dynasty, just for fun.
