Grey's Anatomy vs. the spinoff

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Apr 23rd 2007 12:01PM
Kate WalshNews about the Grey's Anatomy spinoff have been pouring in since late February when it was announced that Grey's character Addison would possibly get her own show. Since then, fans and critics have been speculating as to whether this was a good or a bad idea.

Earlier this week, ABC gave official details about the two episodes that will serve as a test to see if the spinoff will indeed be part of their 2007-2008 lineup or if Addison will stay at Seattle Grace.

Even if the two-hour spinoff episodes will only air on May 3, we can already start speculating as what series we will like better: Grey's Anatomy or Private Practice (the spinoff's tentative title).

Personally, the more and more I hear about the spinoff episodes, the more and more I warm up to the idea. Actually, being tired of Meredith whining in every episode and of Gizzie just making me want to scream as I do NOT want to see them become a couple, I embraced the spinoff news from the start. Addison is a strong character that has a good following of fans (even though people hated her at first since she was coming between Meredith and Derek) and if I have to follow one of the characters to a spin-off, she is #1 on my list.

The behind the scenes antics on the set of Grey's Anatomy have also put a strain on my relationship with the show. Somehow, I cannot take some of the cast seriously anymore. Every time I see Burke on screen, I am reminded of what he said about T.R. Knight. When I see Izzie, I can't help but think of her battle for more money per episode when it'll take me a few years to even make what she asks for an episode. No matter, I'm still watching the show due to its writing, wacky storylines, compelling cases, and because McSteamy and McDreamy aren't too shabby!

Knowing that the spinoff will be helmed by Shonda Rhimes, one can only expect the same quality of show we've been used to with Grey's. With a cast composed of people we have seen on TV before and grown attached to when watching other series, the spin-off starts off well. All of them have not been in hot water recently, so when watching the actors I will see them as their characters and not be reminded they said bad things about other cast members or demanded more money, etc. Afraid the spin-off will not have a McSteamy or a McDreamy? Have you seen Tim Daly? The man has strong presence in every show he does and is not too shabby either!

Without having seen the two Grey's Anatomy episodes that will help to set scene for the potential spin-off, which of the two series are you most compelled to watch?

We will do a follow-up to our "Grey's Anatomy vs. the spinoff" after the two-hour May 3 special airs

okay..... soo i used to absolutly love GA, i was completely obsessed with it. but their wrong turn was the drowning episodes. they didnt need to do that, it was just toooo much!! where do u go from there....that was more of a season finale kinda thing or even series finale, idk. the earlier episodes from the first season were so much fun and i loved all the characters soooo much!!! then addison came and ruined everything and of course- (like everyone else), i hated her. but by mid- 2nd season, i was in LOVE!! this is also around the time when i began to dislike Izzie and merideth, and like alex- who i had previously hated.

this show used to be so smart and interesting and complex. i used to really care about it bacause it was just SO GOOD!

but they are just trying too hard now. it is the same with desperate housewives. the storylines are just so silly and confusing.

i thought the spin- off would be stupid and hoped they wouldnt do it cuz it would surely fail....that means bye bye addy(which would suck) but i saw the pilot and it was REALLY good. there is so much promise there. i found myself being dissappointed when they went back to the GA scenes. the characters have alot of chemistry and addison is good in that environment. when she got in the scrubs and started really sinking her teeth into the new place. it was very warm a comfortable to watch, i think it will do very well.

and if they want to keep GA on the air much longer- they need to do serious house cleaning!!!1). get rid of callie. have her find out what happened between izzie and george and freak out and leave- she is dry and boaring.2).get rid of izzie. she is annoying and weird and completly irrelevant to the show. after they milked the deny thing for all it was worth, there was nowhere else to go with her. 3). have mark run after addison and go to L.A, they work well together. 4). come up with somethign new for christina, she has so much substance.

and ill let the professiomals come up with something for derek and merideth bacause i cant stand to watch one more episode of that stuff between them, its just bblllaaaaahhh!!!!

well some soap opras have lasted over 20 years. As a screenwriter myself I fail however to see where they are going with the so called plot. Mer/Der is so old and yes very ross and racheal. When I watched friends it wasnt because of ross and racheal that made me mad that the focus like Mer/Der is only on them. I think there would be hope for gizzie as everyone calls them but the writers are going the wrong way with this. I liked the spin off but I thought it was a little one sided. well thats my thoughts folks, till next time.

I was soooo disappointed in Thursday's 2-hr show. I don't care about the spinoff I wanted to see Grey's. I liked it before Addison came and I'll like it after she leaves. There haven't been enough new episodes this year. I'm always disapointed when they play the reruns and they've done it a lot. Keep the original cast and let the others go.

I WOULD LOVE A SPINOFF as long as every now and then they link back to one another. Kind of like "Knots Landing" and "Dallas."
I love GA - I didn't watch the first two seasons but, now I cannot wait for Thursday nights!

I hate this stupid spin-off! Let it crash and burn, and get canceled midway through next season, if it has a season at all. p.s. To those of you who think this show will have more "DOCTOR" stuff than "RELATIONSHIP" stuff you're in for a suprise. As soon as Addison arrives she be sleeping with two guys, whatever happened to Alex?

I love Greys Anatomy! Its my favorite show on TV. And as a fan i totally believe that this spin-off is a horrible idea. All of you stupid people dont realize but the only reason they're doing this is to make more money. They see that Grey's is doing well and want to get as much out of that as possible. Personaly, I thought Addison and Alex looked perfect together, and I believe they should stay together. Plus who leaves their job because your crush turned you down, nobody I know for sure.
As for me I'm hoping that this stupid spin-off will crash and burn, and that Addison will be back on Grey's midway through next season. That cast they hired also sucked. I don't even know who these people are. So if you are a fan of Grey's dont watch the spin-off and maybe we can have Addison back with Alex in no time.

I can't believe all these comments from people who don't watch greys! I love the show and am excited about spin-off. However don't want to see the original greys dismantled because of some bad press. we're all humans and make mistakes! Don't ruin the original for the spin off

Grey's is still my favorite show, but they should really buckle down and get back to some good storylines. There are holes in the plots now whereas before their was continuity. I could elaborate longer, but I'll list a few for instances: 1) Why is Derrick all of a sudden upset with Meredith and wanting to break up with her? Because of some lack of communication or B.S. about her having breathing problems? I thought it was just because Derrek has an inability to make up his mind. 2) All of the residents who were fighting for chief in a previous episode were also all over the place and in way more places than they could even have been! Derrek in particular was all over the place. One minute he's outside fighting in the hall, and the next they cut to him knee deep in an intense 4 hour sinus surgery. Then he was off to Meredith's house, and then back to the hospital. 3) Why is Meredith's dad's wife ALL OF A SUDDEN interested in Meredith? I just don't get that, period, Ellis or no Ellis. It just seems like filler. 4) Izzy and George together! Izzy used to act like she wanted to kick George like a dog, and now he's got some kind of magnetic animal hold over her? Everyone on that show used to joke George and now I'm supposed to believe he's some kind of sex god with two really attractive girls fighting for his affections.

On a separate note, why do all sub plots have to revolve around the same main episode theme? Tonight it was clearly about infidelity. Do you know how I could tell? Because they talked about it in every single shot!

I pray that the season finale is good b/c I'm starting to lose faith in Grey's, but I don't have any faith at all in Adison's spin-off.

I really do love Grays Anal.

I do have to say that I really I dislike the homosexual issue /conflict constantly being shown between the chubby little white gay boy TR and the tall african american man Isiah. Wish that this would go away. These silly actors and actresses are like spoiled babies including the german catherine heigle girl who's comments are ruining the show for alot of people.

I am starting to like the idea of the spinoff. I hope that it is not as dramatic as GA, hopefully a little more upbeat. I was very against it when I first heard about the spinoff but as I hear more about it I think it's going to be amazing.

As far as the Gizzie relationship, I HATE it. I don't think that ever should have happened, and its been taken too far. I absolutely love GA and I look forward to it every week. The outside drama between cast members really does not effect my ability to watch the actual show. I am a little worried about how Addison leaving Seattle Grace will affect the show. She is one of my favorite characters on the show (Her, Callie, and Bailey). I guess we will see.
