Dancing With The Stars: Week 6 Results

by Brett Love, posted Apr 25th 2007 3:00AM
Joss Stone(S04E11) ABC brought George Lopez back out of mothballs this week, so there was no 8:00 recap show. Instead, Tom and Samantha ran through the performances quickly at the beginning of the show. The best part of that was seeing Ian's reaction to the judge's comments last night. Much like many of the readers here, Ian didn't really understand where they were coming from.

It's a good point, and something that seems to happen every season. For whatever reason, the judges get a burr under their saddle and just go after one of the better contestants, while soft-pedaling some of the lesser routines. His best course of action is to move along and know that he's in good company.

After the recap, it was time for the encore. I was actually expecting Laila and Maksim to get it. The choice of the group swing for the encore was a good one though. It's a fun number and it was good to see everyone get to participate.

The musical guest this week was Joss Stone. I was sold on this results show as soon as I heard that she would be performing. She's one of my favorites, and didn't disappoint. Her voice was great, as usual, and the dance put on by Tony, Elena, Julianne, and Eric was very good. Tony and Elena are always fun to watch, but I think Julianne and her brother stole the show. I don't think there are any spots opening for the male pros any time soon, but should there be, Eric would seem to be up to the challenge.

The audience comments, featuring J.C. from NSYNC, George Lopez, George Wendt, and Gabrielle Carteris (who is 46 now!) from 90210 was next. As expected, there was a lot of questioning of the judges comments regarding Ian & Cheryl. That led to the first results of the night. Surprising nobody, Apolo & Julianne will be joining Laila & Maksim next week.

Just in time for the release of the DVD, the cast of Dreamgirls stopped by to perform "Steppin' to the bad side." That was quite a production. Lots of great dancing and a really good song. It was the best advertisement they could have done for the DVD, and a nice treat for viewers tuning in to catch the results show.

I haven't been a big fan of the Jimmy Kimmel segments this season, but he was back again this week to talk about the fox trot, the Rolls-Royce of dance. The setup was much like all the other segments, but I did like the payoff this week with the shoddy editing inserting Jonathan and a partner as stand-ins for Jimmy and Guillermo.

Joss Stone came back to perform her new single, "Tell me about it." No dancers this time, just Joss and three backup singers on the stage. It was another very good performance, but then I could listen to her sing all day, so I'm a little biased on that one. She is my favorite musical guest of the season.

Her number was followed by what was probably the weakest part of this episode, the pre-recorded package about how the dancers are going crazy this far into the competition. We see so much of this behind the scenes stuff that it is all starting to run together. Much of the segment felt like I had seen it before. Not horrible, but it really pales when compared to the big performances.

Tom and Samantha came back to announce that Joey & Kym will be back next week, but John & Edyta were in the bottom two. After one last package about the pre-show preparations of the contestants, it was finally time to get down to serious business. With Billy Ray & Karina and Ian & Cheryl safe, Heather and Jonathan were the other team in the bottom two.

In the end, Heather & Jonathan were sent home. I don't think that was much of a surprise, and I fully expect John & Edyta to be eliminated next week. And that's where things will really get interesting. Is the Billy Ray fan base big enough to push him into the top four? It should be interesting to watch.

5 out of 7Joss Stone and the Dreamgirls cast were excellent, but the show did drag a little with the package heavy second half. Still a pretty good hour. I'm giving it a 5, out of 7. Erin will be back next week. Don't forget to vote for your favorite celebrity dancer in AOL's poll!

The show is what it is, and I give all the contestants a great deal of respect because, and you got to be honest with me, these "dancers" are so used to doing things on their level , that it is a real "wrap across the nose" when they are "judged" some are "yeah, yeah, big deal" and some are truly "crushed!". The look on some of their faces after knowing how hard they've trained and what difficulity with their own schedules they've had to indure to have Carrie Anne and the two "old farts" from the muppet show tell them that they havn't given any time to learning the dance and training, it's a good thing that the show isn't on cable t.v. because you can bet that the modesty of the contestants after the judging and their opinions of how and what the judges saw as far as "effort on their part" would surely be not so "acceptable" and then we would "comments" with dialogue that would have Tony Suprano covering HIS ears in reaction to these "sweet, innocent, and professional" instructers and "dancers". How many times do you think Leila wanted to "snatch that middle judge by his skinny neck" and show him what "effort" really is and the other dancers too, I mean Appolo would like to have his "shot" also and Billy Ray, hell, he'd would just like to take him back to the "ole fishing hole" and "discuss" his judging results on a dance, that's all!

All you Billy Ray and Heather bashers need to learm some manners. Billy Ray has been honest all along by saying he isn't a dancer. Give the man some credit for trying. We "hillbillies" love Billy Ray and you will not block us from voting! He's a great singer, actor and entertainer. He is a moral, honest, straight forward man who loves God, family and country. He has worked the hardest of any of the dancers on the show. Whether you like him or not, he deserves respect. About Heather, I think she is very courageous to come on the show. I have a handicap, but I sure wouldn't have the courage to do what she did. If you have an opinion, say it in a nicer way. The world has enough hate and condemnation. We don't need anymore, especially over a tv show.

Sorry Suzie, you better enjoy Billy Ray's nipples while you can, 'cause he's a goner next week.

But at least we'll still have Apolo's tiny perfect buns to keep us happy for weeks to come.

And yes Frank, I know, you probably find them scary too.

I think Billy Ray has been holding back so he can surprise us next week.

And Frank, Billy's nipples aren't scary, they're cute.

I was not a fan of Heather Mills coming into this competition. And, just think how bad it would have been for her if she had tried to get on the British version of the show 'Strictly Come Dancing'. But, as I watched the first few weeks, I came to respect her determination to overcome her physicality and put on a good performance. I tried to watch her as I would watch anyone I didn't have any preconceived notions about and found that, while definitely not the best, was also not the worst celebrity dancer in the bunch and was respectful that she wasn't booted out too soon.

Ian dances like a highly competent member of a chorus line, not like a lead dancer. He just doesn't project personality, or real spark.

His idea of passion during this week's number was to frown a lot -- the expression was all in his face, not in his movements. That's what the judges are on him about, and it's for his own good.

If he can break free of that one big limitation, he has the potential to blow all the other contestants off the floor.... though Apolo will give him the toughest challenge (that kid's skills are growing in leaps and bounds.

Responding to so many negative comments about Heather, but especially # 32, I believe that Heather IS there for all the right reasons, to inspire and help other "dis"-abled as well as for charitable causes. All these negative comments about her just prove the Bible aphorism about good "being evilly spoken of" by those who don't understand,,,Wow! Walk a mile in her shoes..There is sooo little compassion shown here. Think of all our troops coming home disabled! They need a role model to show them their lives are not over! And she has put herself out there as a target for noble reasons--she had a lot to lose and very little to gain but she did it for selfless motives...where does all the hate here come from?

Heather Mills was a nobody before she married Paul McCartney. She made sure she got pregnant in that marriage...she would have gotten millions anyway... didn't have to put the screws to him. Now she wants to be a celebrity. Her charity campaigner image is such a farce. It's all about her. I do, however admire her determination and skill on the dancefloor. I'm sure her performances will give people with disabilities a boost. But in the end, I still think she is a self-promoter and an opportunist.

I also agree with comment #8, 9 and 18
Maybe they can't all dance but they said 'yes'
and are giving it their best even though their
best may not be good enough for some viewers. I think that they are really good sports to get on national TV and show the world that they aren't good at dancing. Plus
they are giving to a charity. I suggest that
everyone reread #8, 9 and 18 again. That
shows the spirit of this show! Regina

To all the people who have been saying that Heather's routines contained illegal moves, I feel I have to say that you're mistaken. After all the hulabaloo of last season, do you actually think Jonathan would choreograph illegal moves? LIFTS are illegal, not splits, not flips. Rule of thumb is anything a dancer would not be able to do alone is what's illegal. A woman cannot raise both feet off the ground and fly around in circles, but she can do a backflip.

Heather is definitely not the best dancer of the group, but neither is she the worst. At this point, that honor would go to Billy Ray. Even he would admit that, as John would agree that he's not "up there" with the top group. It's a shame that people vote a dance contest with their favorites instead of who is the better dancer. You really can tell the difference so that it's not totally a matter of opinion.

With the more talented dancers, it is a matter of opinion who is the best. Laila, Apolo, Joey, and Ian: I have to agree with the judges about Ian and I don't think they're being too harsh. He's not of the caliber of the other three. Joey has improved greatly since the beginning and looks to have lost quite a big of weight, which does help with the look of his posterior sticking out. He's also more comfortable with the dance position, which helps even more. Apolo is the most graceful and has mastered all of the dances to date, which is reflected in the scores. Laila looks lovely and is also very good. Just leave the "funk" out of a dance that does not call for it.

Not sure who will eventually come in as the winner, but right now, my opinion is that Apolo and Julieanne are the ones that should claim the trophy.
