Jericho: One if by Land

by Paul Goebel, posted Apr 26th 2007 6:08AM

Lennie James(S01E20) As the episode began, with Jake & Erik both behind bars, it looked like this might be Erik's big chance to grow a pair. It was nice to see the Green boys working together and standing up to the New Bernians, who it turns out are a bigger threat than Ravenwood.

I can't say I was surprised to see Maggie return but it made me really concerned for her safety. As we've seen, when a lady gets involved with Jake, things rarely turn out well for them. I guess she should consider herself lucky that she was only shot in the leg.

If you watched closely during the scene outside the salt mine, you will see a very common mathematical equation in action...psycho teen+dumbass mayor=casualties. It seems more and more that young Dale is quickly becoming the ruthless kingpin that will rule the city of Jericho.

So, what do you think Hawkins did to those two deputies? The more I watch the more I love his character. It seems to me that he is CBS's answer to Jack Bauer. It was also nice to see him getting things done without worrying about his family getting in the way.

Lastly, if Hawkins is the biggest badass is Jericho, Johnston must be a close second. I mean, Constantino has his sons hostage and Johnston doesn't even hesitate to get right up in his face. You should also take note that it was Johnston who carried Maggie all the way back home.

I liked this episode a lot and I can't wait to see how this season ends. My rating is a six.

How awesome was that face to face scene between Constantino and Jonston? wow

The producers of jericho must have hired some new writers. the last episodes can't even be compared to the mediocre first episodes (remember the bad popsongs in them all the time?).

Damm Hawkins is the man.. If it was Hawking vs. Jack Bauer he would totaly kick Jack's ass!!
But yeah this was a killer episode (heh get it :P).. at first i thought Dale was a little creep, but the more i see i realise that he's just doing this to survive.. But selling the salt mine to the others (god i watch too much lost) was a low blow.. If i was mayor and he did that i would kick him out of the town!

Dale is turning into Jericho's version of Edward G. Robinson's famous "Little Caesar", a tiny, vicious gangster tyrant. In more current terms, think Lex Luthor with hair.

And Hawkins? Right up there with Daniel Craig's extra-lethal version of James Bond.

As for the comparison to Jack Bauer: I think Jake will eventually fit that bill -- less psychopatic than Hawkins, more driven by ethicial considerations.

Regardless, Jack, oops I mean, Jake and Hawkins make one hell of a team.

My girl and I were talking about it last night that New Burn = Jericho - Johnston + asshole sheriff.

I think with Grey and the dumb teenager, Jericho (the town, not the show) is teetering on the edge of similar authoritarianism. It was only Johnston's firm grip on lawfulness (including allowing himself to be replaced in an election) that kept Jericho from descending into the chaos that embraced New Burn and allowed the sheriff to rise to dictatorial status.

RedStarRevolution: I do enjoy your name, it's so unabashedly, quaintly bolshevik.

On the subject of names, the town locals should be called Jerichowanatonians.

I get the impression you're a fellow (or gal, but probably fellow) who has a certain fondness for chaos and anarchy (and maybe Soviet-style oppression), hence your understandable enjoyment of this show.

But I have to ask: do you really think America is that feeble? That weak? That fragile?

During the Second World War, Britain's major cities had the bejeepers bombed out of them, week after week, month after month. I know, I was there. But the trains kept running, the food kept flowing, the power stayed on (much of the time), and the BBC radio service rallied and informed the population from one end of that bejewelled isle to the other -- virtually without interruption.

But in this series, a few bombs appear to have virtually destroyed America's national fabric. Where's CNN, and the other major networks? The absence of national television seems implausible, of national radio -- impossible. America has about a billion cars. Are we to believe they're all off the road, along with transport trucks and trains and planes? America has hundreds of medium-sized cities -- they were left untouched. So why, my bolshevik/anarchist friend, this near-total collapse of the greatest nation on earth?

I love well-drawn disaster scenerios as much as the next person: Wells' War of the Worlds being a prime example.

But I simply can't accept the notion that you Yanks could be so utterly undone by a few tragic nuclear attacks on a few of your cities. You've far too much grit to make that possibility, and thus this show's premise, even remotely believable.

God, Dale is a creep. I hope someone in New Bern kills him.

Not terribly thrilled with Maggie as opposed to Heather.

Hawkins certainly is the CBS version of Jack Bauer. I loved his line about the threat of torture last week. I laughed.

Fransisco (16): don't do it. You'll only hurt your hand and wreck your TV.

Dave, they explained who bombed them for the most part. Hawkins said it was domestic, and the group was anarchists, or something to that extent...

...And nothing will ever be better than Lost...

Onto the main stuff, I love the way we've been on this slow roll to this point. When the bombs dropped, obviously it was freakout time, but they still had food, and electricity. Then the electricity went off...then the food started to run dry...then they had to find an alternate source of power as the fuel they had wasn't enough...Jericho, and other towns, withdrew into themselves and no longer thought of themselves as Americans, but but people from Jericho (Jerichoites, Jerichonians?).

Its this slow degradation from the point of what we are now, to a few months down the line and society is set back a few centuries. Kinda shows how fragile our real world society is, because I think Jericho is a pretty excellent description of how things would break down if something like this were ever to happen.

War with New Bern!! Can't wait...

So if Jericho is attacked on next week show I expect the tank to be in the following week episode. Also Dale is really getting on my nerve. I really feel like punching him in the face when he is on screen.
