The Daily Show: April 26, 2007

by Annie Wu, posted Apr 27th 2007 11:41AM
Jon StewartFirst up was some coverage of the previous night's Moment of Zen, footage of President Bush busting a move... or looking outrageously giddy about an epileptic seizure... or pulling an Elaine-esque full-body dry-heave. Whatever it was, it was horrifying.

For the first time, The Daily Show finally talked about the Virginia Tech shootings, and they did it perfectly. Instead of focusing on the incident itself, they covered the mainstream media coverage. I avoided the big news channels for several days after the shootings, so I was doubly-shocked by the video clips. Pathetic.

The Regent University bit was great. I've never heard of this school and, even after watching those video clips and Googling it, I still don't believe it exists. There's no way. "Hey, are you tired of going to law school at a laundromat? Do I have a place for you! Education-style learning in a school-type environment."

The night's guest was Richard Gere, star of The Hoax. I liked how Gere attempted to immediately dodge the obvious hot topic by saying that he and Jon used to live in the same neighborhood. Nice try, Gere! But we want to hear more about how you're a wanted man. By the way, I can understand how calling for Gere's arrest over a public display of affection sounds a little extreme, but have you all actually seen the full footage of the moment? Because Gere was kind of acting creepy. He didn't just give the actress an affectionate peck on the cheek, y'know. Honestly, I probably would have kicked him in the groin for skeeving me out. But I digress... The interview was okay.

Jon/Stephen: Stephen Colbert's living will. Moment of Zen: Oh, goodness. Audio of Laura Bush saying that no one suffers more than the President... over footage of him dancing. Absolutely hysterical.

yeah, thought (hoped) Jon would call Richard Gere out a little bit more on the Indian thing. I heard about it a few times in the past week, each time hearing it referred to as "a peck on the cheek", or something similar. Well.... i actually saw the footage, and that was NOT just a "peck on the cheek". He confronted her from the front like he wanted to make out with her, then was kind of forced off to a kiss on the cheek. Then he forced her into a dip, and quite visibly grabbed her ass while he was lowering her.
Reason for arrest or national outcry? nah. Highly, or at least somewhat inappropriate? looked like it to me....

"Who could possibly resemble Cho more than a Jihadi suicide bomber? "- Um...I do believe that's what Jon was trying to say. Which I feel Jon made clear with a non-too-subtle "....oh" after the, "I’ll tell you what society's got its (bleep) together, these Islamic theocracies, that is the kind of society that doesn't produce these kind of nut bags."

The point he was trying to make was that Beck was critcizing our society for basically being too secular (only caring about fame and money...which, for a TV personality, I feel was kind of rich), and thus suggesting that a better society would be one that valued something else, like a theocracy, which values "morality" as defined by religion. And what are currently the most obvious theocracies, and also the ones that churn out "these kind of nut bags"? Islamic ones.

Basically, Jon was very obviously being SARCASTIC, pointing out the irony of Beck's statment. And I find it difficult to believe someone would miss that, unless they were doing so intentionally.

If you were to criticize anything perhaps it might be that Beck did not specifically say that a more religious society would prevent this kind of event, but...well, I'm pretty sure he does believe that.

Jon Stewart was being a bit of a "douche" in his straw man attack on Glenn Beck's screed about how Virginia tech killer Cho was a "product of a society where our children value fame and money above anything else"

John's riposte:"I’ll tell you what society's got its (bleep) together, these Islamic theocracies, that is the kind of society that doesn't produce these kind of nut bags."

Who could possibly resemble Cho more than a Jihadi suicide bomber? When Jon mocks someone like Glenn Beck, it really ought to have some plausibility - Jon is saying that Islamic theocracies don't produce suicide murderers?

Smart as he is, sometimes Jon Stewart just seems like a cheerleader for some not very well thought-out liberal orthodoxies that he and his audience share. Like the moral equivalence of our greedy, alienated consumer society that produces narcissictic creeps like Cho Sung-Hui and the tyrannical, oppressed society like the one that produced Mohammed Atta.

Regent University is actually right by my house so it was very weird and exciting to hear Jon talk about it. But I'm sure most people who live in Virginia Beach have never even heard of it, I don't know anyone who ever went there so I'm very surprised that so many people who go there end up in the government.

But man, that area is so congested and Pat Robertson just keeps wanted to build more and more. Because apparently his goal is to make people's commute as horrible as possible.
Yeah I know you don't care but every one hates Pat Robertson and I just like having a personal reason to hate him.

As soon as Jon mentioned the VT shootings my heart skipped a beat. All the coverage of death and violent crimes is why I don't watch the real news (especially Detroit local). But I cannot not agree with you more; he handled it perfectly.

The guy who claimed liberals were using this tragedy as a way to push gun control, only to turn it around and use it to push for more guns - brilliant!

The clips mentioning Rosie made me chuckle out loud.

No correspondents... but I didn't miss them.
