Stargate Atlantis: Irresponsible

Ronan isn't very happy once he takes a swing at Lucius wearing an anchient shield
(S03E13) Once again, we're given a bit of a filler episode. Not that these are bad things - there are only so many episodes where we want to see the same bad guys. These filler episodes help bridge the gap and usually manage to introduce a few key elements that become useful later on. This one was an odd combination of older elements - kind of like leftover night, the only time people would consider combining meatloaf, Chinese food and hot wings.

Our first leftover is Lucius - the baker who used drugs to become the most popular person in his old village. Lucius is one of those truly entertaining characters. Sure, he's whiny, cheesy and annoying, but he's fun. The collective groan from the team was one of those perfect expressions of how (most?) of us feel. If you haven't guessed, he's the meatloaf. This time, meatloaf is running around pretending to be a hero, thanks to an ancient personal shield. Meatloaf has a taste for theatrics - so he set up some bad guys to make sure that he's adored by the towns people.

Of course, being meatloaf, he ends up underpaying his fake marauders. They just happen to be some displaced Genii soldiers. One of their old friends happens to be another leftover - Kolya - the Genii commander that Shep's fought oh so many times.

When Kolya arrives on the scene, things get interesting. Things turn back into an action episode, but I felt like it was a bit predictable and cheesy. Still, it was fun - and Lucius manages to do something decent for a change. But I'd say that he still deserved a good kick in the shins.

The transition from Lucius' story to Kolya seemed a bit pedestrian, but on the whole it was a fun episode. The showdown at the end was a bit overplayed, but at least we won't be seeing Kolya again. The odd plot combination and a few slow spots lend me to give it a 5 on our 1-7 scale.

Thanks to all you commando types for your fabulously informative postings about guns.

Really. They were fascinating. No, make that rivetting.

Maybe next week we can have some seamstresses write in about the stitching used on the Stargate team's uniforms.

And after that, we can have a couple of dozen horticulturalists post their thoughts on the show's vegetation.

You NRAers have opened up a whole new world of possibilities.

Are you sure it wasn't a standard issue M9?

Anywho, what you can't do is shoot someone square in the chest from a couple of feet away with your team standing behind him, and not expect one of your teammates to catch the bullet after it's zipped through him.

Unrelated to this episode, but every SGA fan should check out David Hewlett (McKay) doing his own Stargate rap. (In response to this video.)

If the gun was a 1911, then you are most definitely correct about not firing from the uncocked position. I couldn't really remember what we actually used. I think Kolya will come back somehow (he was wearing a vest or something). Robert Davi is too cool of a guest star to get rid of completely.

You know, I *thought* that the weapon he drew was an old slab-side 45. You only caught a glimpse of it, and I just assumed I was mistaken and that it was really the 9MM in commom use today. So, he COULDN'T just draw and fire. Shades of "Gunsmoke", and it sort of annoyed me that they killed off Kolya. I guess his taking the team hostage to ransom for weapons and technology was getting tired anyway

...except that the handgun he used was a 1911A1, single action, still favored my many special-ops folk!

What? I'm with David... I would never give this episode a 5. It was more like a 3. It was kinda boring and too predictable.

As long as it is a single-action/double-action pistol it will fire from a de-cocked position; it will just take a longer and heavier trigger pull. No modern mainstream automatic pistols are single-action like some of the old cowboy six-shooters that require the hammer to be cocked before firing.

Can you draw and fire a 9mm like that without the hammer being back? :)
