AMC to start AMC Gold feature in October

by Bob Sassone, posted May 3rd 2007 3:19PM

amc logoRemember when AMC used to show movies that actually fit into their name, American Movie Classics? And then for some reason they started to show Predator five times a month. Turner Classic Movies has been the network to watch lately.

But starting in October, the cable network will get back to its roots a little bit more with AMC Gold, which, despite sounding like some CD of 70s songs you might buy from an infomercial, is actually a new regular feature showcasing movies that AMC says are "essential viewing." So far the list includes On The Waterfront, Sergeant York, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and Apollo 13.

Apollo 13 is a good movie, but let's hope the network doesn't pull from the list of more recent films too often. There are plenty of older classic gold movies to keep the feature going for a few years.

I loved AMC when showed movies from the 30's and 40's.

Especially the series movies, Like Blondie, Andy Hardy, the B movies, the Busby Berkley musicals.

Bring that back, and watching the commercials, and I will tolerate the commercials. That is why there a mute button.

In total agreement with ratphink: When AMC started showing commercials, and editing films for language and content, that channel has sucked. TMC all the way.

I am a recent recipient of TCM and AMC. The first, I LOVE. I never knew I could enjoy black and white oldies so much, and yes, I agree with Scott, they show all their movies respectfully. As for AMC -- what a disappointment. Love their theatres, but as a movie channel, gawd, they are awful!

This "Gold" ideas sounds like a small move in the right direction.

Until AMC goes back to not showing commericals and featuring flims "uncut" I'll be sticking with TMC. Hell, on DirecTV FMC is right next store. They may not have the lineup of the others but their flick are shown uncut and commmerical free.

It's all about "appealing to the younger audience", but they haven't even caught my eye yet. I like TCM Underground on Fridays (I don't know if it's just Fridays though).

As long as they keep interrupting them with crappy ads and running stuff on the screen during the movie, it doesn't matter if they're showing "Citizen Kane" or "Predator". If only TCM would devote a night or two to movies from the post-1960's era...at least they know how to show them respectfully.
