Buzz on that Geico cavemen show not too good

by Bob Sassone, posted May 4th 2007 7:31PM

Geico cavemanA lot of people said "huh?" when it was announced that ABC had ordered a pilot for a new series based on the Geico commercials featuring cavemen, and now it looks like those people may have been on to something.

Early word on the show is that it's "astoundingly awful," "without a laugh in sight," "jaw-droppingly horrendous," and makes American Dad look sophisticated. But I wonder how these people who saw the pilot really feel. The reviews come from someone at Ain't It Cool News.

The part that upsets me the most? The actors from the commercials aren't even in the show! So...what the hell?

When is Geico going to come out with a commercial that actually has information about what they offer in it?

First off, you're believing AICN? When did they ever get anything right. Second, why all the hate for a show that hasn't even aired yet? Yeah, maybe getting the actors from the ads would be better, but perhaps there was a reason (actors demanded too much money, not interested, etc.) that ABC had no control over. Why oh why does America leap to the worst conclusion first?

I loved those cavemen from the commercials and I thought they had great potential. But from the sounds of it, they made it into According to Jim with racial undertones and a laugh track. Stupid ABC

This COULD have been great. If they used the same actors, had no laughtrack, showed their dating experiences, caveman discrimination, showed them at their shrink's office, etc.

Leave it to ABC to totally screw up a good idea.

More proof they should bring back Rodney! Rodney Carrington was awesome!

Hmm... astoundingly awful," "without a laugh in sight," "jaw-droppingly horrendous,"... yep pretty much sounds like most of the shows in the top twenty. Definately the top comedy, which is currently Two and a Half Men... (shoots self in the head). ABC should pick this up they'll finally have something to go up against American Idol to compete for the idiot demographic or as I like to call it "mainstream America."

What's next - The Odd Couple starring Jack from Jack-in-the-Box and the Burger King King?

Wait, now THAT I would watch.

You mean that was a real pilot? When I heard about it I thought it was a joke.

You mean you CAN'T make a good TV show off of a commercial gimmick for an insurance company? Shocking. Still, 10 to 1 says it is at least as unfunny as According to Jim, George Lopez and every other comedy ABC has put on the air in the last 5 years.

I think they discovered that it's a whole lot easier to create 30 second commercials than 22 minute episodes. Just ask Lorne Michaels and the SNL gang who have given us awful 90 minute movies based on mediocre 5 minute sketches.
