Scrubs: My Cold Shower

by Joel Keller, posted May 4th 2007 12:21AM
Scrubs: My Cold Shower(S06E19) Notgettingany Syndrome is an affliction that affects millions of American men, and it seems to run rampant at Sacred Heart, doesn't it? Carla's still not feelin' it months after having a baby, so Turk goes without. The Todd always talks a good game, but no one's getting into his banana hammock. Kelso can't find any interesting Asian massage therapists to befriend; he's so desperate, he's thinking of actually having sex with his wife. And, J.D.... Well, we all know what's going on with J.D.

What does all this mean? Lots of cold showers. A lot of thinking about your aunt's arm fat. And it also means we've found one of the funniest episodes of the season.

This had a lot of the old-style Scrubs feel. Lots of fantasy sequences (everyone had one... more on this in a second); a mysterious medical case; Cox berating someone; Elliot saying "frick" a lot. Yes, there was a little bit of drama, mostly in the form of J.D.'s lamenting what he could have had with Elliot, but even that was treated with a bit of a light touch, as he sublimated those desires by trying to do more than "mackin'" with Elliot's sorority sister Melody.

OK, let's address this whole J.D. thing. Was I the only one who rolled my eyes at the end of the episode when J.D.'s internal monologue said "It should have been me"? Jeez alou, I thought we settled this whole J.D./Elliot issue a year or two ago. I never wanted to see them become one of those on-again-off-again Ross-and-Rachel torture-fests, but it seems like it might actually be moving in that direction. Heck, even the show's writers acknowledge what's going on; Carla says that J.D. and Elliot are like Ross and Rachel on Friends, and Cox agrees, though he thinks J.D. is more like Rachel. I think they did a better Ross and Rachel joke a few years ago:

Janitor to J.D.: I mean, you guys aren't exactly Ross and Rachel.
J.D.: Who?
Janitor: You know... Dr. Ross and Rachel from bookkeeping.

Scrubs: My Cold ShowerHis attempts at going to "Boobtown" with Melody weren't even that inspired, though I liked his snow-globe mermaid fantasy, starring "GoaTurk" (a long way to go for a "My Baaaad" joke, but what the hell, right?). Like last week, Kerri Russell's presence as Melody didn't do much for me comedy-wise. There have been a few female guest stars who have been able to slide easily into the Scrubs vibe; heck, I was disappointed that Heather Graham never joined the cast permanently, she fit in so well. But Russell just didn't really look comfortable in the role, even when she was talking about her all-girl threesome (though I liked the "Damn!" chain that Turk started. Also funny was J.D. asking, "Was it two girls and a guy or was it a devil's threesome?").

For the second week in a row, the writers didn't give Neil Flynn a whole heck of a lot to do. The "God is watching" joke was good -- "Who is this God guy?" -- but not carried far enough. And the only reason why he was fixing the sprinklers was to accidentally give the boys a cold shower in the ICU.

Oh, and seniors with syphilis? Ewww... Though Elliot's lame attempt to explain the sickness to the two unrelated patients was a little funny, especially when she handed the responsibility to a scared young intern. Wow. Six years ago, that would have been her. The circle is complete.

Another note: Is Jordan just randomly crazy now? She used to be more of a cunning kind of crazy. Now she's asking strangers to smell her Botoxed underarms and tossing bottles at The Todd (OK, maybe that wasn't so crazy, but still...).

You knew that Keith giving Elliot the opportunity to do his proposal her way was like giving a drunken college kid a no-fee Citibank Visa, didn't you? At least it got us the chance to hear her "frick-a-thon" as Keith tried to jam the undersized ring on her finger. Elliot's pretty skinny; what kind of tiny, Cracker Jack box ring did Keith get that couldn't even fit on her finger?

The best part about that subplot, of course, was every guy's fantasy about what being married to Elliot would be like. Funniest? Cox and the butcher knife? Sexiest? Preppie Turk having sex with a maid that looked suspiciously like Carla (What am I thinking? It was Carla and Elliot together. Duh. "It would be so much easier that way," is how Carla described it). Most disappointing? Elliot asking Janitor if they pigeonholed their kids and not seeing actual pigeons. Given Janitor's history of mass taxidermy, that would have been a funny, in-character joke.

Of course, the sweetest one was J.D. and Elliot. I swear, I really hope they don't go there. We know Kim and the Dorian fetus are still hanging around, and as we found out earlier this week, the season -- and maybe the seriesRating 6 -- might end on a bit of a cliffhanger. Let's hope that cliffhanger has more to do with J.D. moving on with Kim or someone else than taking yet another shot at Elliot.

Like I said, pretty funny episode. I'll give it a 6.

No matter how oddly the JD/Elliot thing was done in the past, it would have been beyond stupid if they hadn't have addressed his feelings. I hate when shows do that.

And, as someone who has always liked them together, I took his look to mean that he's sad that all his friends are settling down and getting married and he's...just stuck. Maybe if Kim and the baby come back, he'll settle down with her.

I also thought Keri Russell did a wonderful job. I thought she fit in pretty well with the rest of them. It was nice seeing her as something other than Felicity.

After reading all of these comments in response to last Thursday's episode, I'm kind've shocked to see such disappointment. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the show, and although it does seem the show has lost some of it's luster in season 6, we should all take it for what it is. Unfortunately, all good things must come to and end, and I'm actually surprised that they got an additional season (rumor). What did you guys expect? The shows been on 6 years....writers can only get SO MANY original ideas.
I thought this episode was good. Jokes were well executed and like alot of the people on here have said, it had that classic Scrubs feel. I wouldn't be surprised if Zach Braff had some part in the production/direction of this episode, because the end pretty much raised one of the more controversial (exaggeration) questions as to what is going on with J.D. and Elliot. I'm sure every guy has been in that situation, where he threw away someone in search for someone grander only to find yourself longing within for that person you threw away. Same goes for the ladies, too. I'm sure if the show had addressed J.D.'s feelings toward Elliot in the past episodes, even if they were subtle hints, alot of you would probably view it differently. But because it kind've threw the audience a curveball, everyone is scratching their head. Understandable.

To be fair i loved this episode and i have loved the series soo far its not been my favourite but still i find it awesome and i know we all thaught that JD and Elliot was done for but i dont have a problem with where the writers could go with the story when i saw the end of the episode and i felt sad, dashboard playing at the end was a good choice aswell that aided the sadness, but i found it a heart hitting ending and i cannot wait for the next episode.

i cant believe nbc even have to think about letting scrubs have a 7th series it should be a straight yes, its fantastic and i doubt anything will ever match up to the type of program it is.

I thought the janitor/elliot joke was played well. The last line when he said "they aren't our kids". Classic janitor.

As I do with Dave Chappelle, I loved when Turk did his 'white man voice' in his fantasy with Elliot.

I really liked the episode. And I have to disagree, I thought Keri Russell fit in very well with the other actors...plus, she's Felicity, so she's awesome.

Although I'm not hardcore Elliot/JD4Ever or anything, I have to say, the only time I've really felt like the show just flat-out copped out was when JD dropped his two years long love affair with Elliot at the very end of Season 3 (that season was still great because of Turk and Carla's wedding and other stuff, but the whole, "I don't love her thing" was just SUCH a cop out). Honestly, it's a credit to the show that I didn't really just throw up my hands and say, "screw this" after JD dumped Elliot immediately after longing for her for the better part of two seasons. The show definitely survived and I think Season 5 was just as strong as seasons 1 - 3, and this season has had more good episodes than bad, but it always irks me to think back at how poorly the JD/Elliot thing was handled 3 years ago.

I mean, does it feel overly convenient that JD is just now re-realizing feelings for Elliot? Perhaps...but as someone who has been in a similar situation (having an on/off relationship with someone who was both my best friend and my co-worker), it's not entirely untrue either. It would have been weird if JD hadn't felt a twinge of something after seeing Elliot move on, in a sense, before him. I'm not saying they should definitely be together - but it seemed perfectly realistic that he would question why it wasn't him instead.

Here's some spoilers for you.

In a week (the 10th) the episode will have J.D. meet up with Dr. Kim Briggs at a convention who will reveal to him that he does in fact have a kid so they will pursue that in the next two episodes. Also the title of the last episode is call "My point of no return" so this may mean that the show won't return for another season. As for what the cliff hanger is I shall not speak of it as it will spoil it for you.

I'm so surprised by everyone's reaction to this ep. I think it was really really good - a real throwback to the "good ol' days" (as some say). I was actually laughing out loud at the dream sequences - especially with Turk's accent in his dream marriage to Elliot.
I agree with some that Heather Graham was probably the best (and most dysfunctional) counterpart for JD. Keri Russell is just meh.

About the JD/Elliot angle - hasn't anyone thought that JD may have matured in the last 2 years, and this engagement is the "jolt" he got to realize what a big mistake he's made. Also, you must account for that he's been through in the last season or so (Kim, baby, apparent loss of baby, his pooping/fainting disease, no apartment to live in, not getting any), he's prob getting emotionally exhausted, and wishing for the same things as Keith/Elliot.

Yeah, I guess I'm one of the very few who actually likes the J.D./Elliot combination. I still swear that they do belong together. Nothing seems more right to me than having those two together on the couch.

I thought this was possibly the best episode of the season. I didn't find the "Damn train" that funny, but most of the other gags were excellent (I, too, thought the Narnia fantasy was weak).

"A devil's threesome" is one of the best lines they've had all season. And Carla definitely looked her best in that maid's outfit, but the Carla-Elliot marriage fantasy will be replayed on my iTunes for weeks to come.

Overall, I thought this was the best episode from a disappointing season. Still, I hope it's back next year.

Seriously? actual pigeons for "pigeon holed"?

That is a terrible joke.
They didn't "miss" it, they realized it wasn't funny.
It's a stupid inside joke that apparently 3 people would have gotten.

Little kids dressed up as janitors and "Elliots" was much funnier.
