Stargate Atlantis: Tao of Rodney

by Will O'Brien, posted May 5th 2007 6:39PM
Rodney shows off his new power by giving the doctor a flying lesson
(S03E14) "Tao of Rodney" was such an interesting episode that I didn't even think of it as a filler - that is, being disconnected from any larger plot lines. When Rodney is exposed to an Ancient device that modifies his DNA, directing him towards ascension or death, he's forced to reconcile just who he is and face many of his flaws.

Rodney's initial response to the effects of the machines is understandable. Who wouldn't want to move things with their mind? Later on, everyone else wants to get in line for their super powers. I had to laugh at Shep's 'great responsibility line,' especially since Spiderman 3 is out this weekend.

After using his powers to swipe a donut or two, Rodney starts upgrading things around Atlantis. Not only that, he spends some time inventing a few things that we'll probably see later on in the show.

Once Elizabeth realizes that Rodney is going to die if he doesn't ascend, things get really interesting. Rodney struggles with his desire to accomplish things and his need to let go. Despite Shep spending six months with a group of Ancients, I was surprised that Tayla didn't help Rodney with his attempts at meditation.

Rodney's attempts to make things right with his friends were really quite touching. The bit with Ronon was a bit odd, but it was one of the best parts of the entire show. (Not that I want that sort of thing all the time...) The ending was a great surprise. When Rodney grabbed Carson, I assumed he was just being a crazy dying person like everyone else.

Episodes like this just show the real potential of Atlantis. It'll be interesting to see where the show goes with the next season. I can't quite give it the top rating, but I probably should.

Evidently, I am unique amongst the SG fans. The one-off episodes are what keep me coming back year after year. I think SG-1 in seasons 3 - 5 struck the perfect balance between stand-alone shows and season-arc shows. Except for the episodes featuring Martouf, each of my favorite SG-1 shows is a stand-alone (or only ties back to one or two other episodes): Lifeboat, 2010, Wormhole X-treme, Window of Opportunity, the one where O'Neill is in contact with the actor who voices Homer Simpson, the one Chris Judge wrote where he imagines he's a fireman, the one where the two star trek fans get to play hero but end up needing to be saved, etc.

Basically, I like the comedy of SG. Rodney, Shep and Carson bring a whole lot of funny. It gets tiring and depressing to constantly watch them fight for their lives. I like to see them lighten up.

I thought McKay was hysterical in the episode where he lost his hearing. I actually found myself crying for him in this episode. I thought the acting was fabulous. I also think the story was interesting.

This season of Atlantis bores me. The Rodney Show. They need new bad guys. Conflict. Anything for contrast. Definitely a better thought process. Stupid trees! Has anyone ever cleaned up after a ficus tree? (Leaves drop when the dog farts.) Imagine what they would do after changing galaxies.

David - I know what you mean about the fake trees - I noticed them too. What are they thinking? They have limited space and ability to transport items from earth so they chose to bring really tacky fake trees to decorate the offices? (I can't imagine them being decorations left over from the Ancients or anything they'd be able to trade for in Pegasus).

This episode was okay. It wasn't bad, it just didn't live up to the potential that the story had. It was nice to see an episode that was set entirely on Atlantis though, I like it best when the entire cast is interacting.

ok, here it goes as to what will really get this show going: move away from the single episode and try a multi season idea. The battle with the wraith had everyone tuned in and it was a constant threat. There has to be an enemy and an ally in this universe that they can work with that is unique to the show.

Akbar: right on. It was good to see actual development of that relationship. It wasn't odd, it was long overdue.

The bit with Ronan was a bit odd? You mean where Rodney opened up to Ronan and gave him a very personal gift. You mean the bit where Rodneyand even Ronan to some extent had some actual character development?

I like the fact they were exploring ATLANTIS!!!

SG-1 Earth based episodes are boring, been there, done that, won the t-shit, eat a hotdog, ran over the plot lines, burried them, dug them up and tried killing them again...

Anyways SG-1 Earth based episodes in recent years suck, Atlantis has so much gonig for it and exploring it and trying to figure out what things are. I love that.

I also like how they mention the really bad episode with John being stuck in a cave with the Anients.

I loved the fatman joke and they brought back the really dumb badly placed fake trees! :)

The ending was lame, and rushed... again. Stargate has had that gonig on for awhile now.
