Oscar De La Hoya going to Dancing With The Stars?

by Brett Love, posted May 8th 2007 4:04PM
Oscar De La HoyaWe are still a couple weeks away from the big finale of Dancing With The Stars (I'm betting on Joey vs. Apolo) but rumors about the next cast of celebrities are already circulating. One of those being mentioned is boxer Oscar De La Hoya.

According to the article at contactmusic.com, Oscar has said that once he retires from boxing he will do Dancing With The Stars. That would make him the third professional boxer to enter the competition, following Evander Holyfield and Laila Ali. I think it would be a great bit of casting for the show. Oscar has a huge following, and while I have never seen him do the foxtrot, I'm reasonably confident that he would be successful making the transition to dancer.

Gayle, the criteria included "sports A-listers", of whom Emmitt, Oscar de la Hoya, Apolo Anton Ono, Laila Ali, Evander Holyfield, and Jerry Rice surely qualify as champions and gold medalists. DWTS has done very well for themselves and for us with sports A-listers. Now I want them to step it up and get entertainment A-listers.

Are A list stars lining up for this show??? Probably not. When the C and D listers complain about the true extent of the commitment in time and energy needed to do a good job, I seriously doubt the people mentioned would want to give up that kind of time. It has revived several careers (Lisa Rinna !!) and like any competition gives people a chance to shine in a brand new area. Look at what Emmett Smith did. He was such a positive force in so many different areas. And yet, according to the criteria expressed would not have been invited. And like any good competition it is set up so the weaker dancers are eliminated first. But you don't know who the weaker dancers are until they dance. There are a couple of choices that could have been better, but that is hindsight which is always 20/20. I don't want to see stars who can dance. I enjoy seeing stars learning how to be ballroom dancers. Say what you will about Billy Ray but his effort and commitment are matched by few. And his improvement gives hope to all of us other two left footers.

David, I'm totally with you. Shandi Finnessey? Who? And Clyde Drexler was a poor choice both on dancing and personality. The celebs need to be able to dance well, have big personalities, or both. Aren't celebs lining up to be on this show?

From the sports world, I'd like to see Hall of Famers like Wayne Gretsky or Cal Ripken.

Kenny Mayne last season was a good choice. He wasn't a great dancer, but he's got a huge personality.

Garth Brooks? Mark Wahlberg?

As an avid DWTS fan, I'm all for A-list and sports A-list celebrities. ABC needs to really step up and stop booking C- and D-list people, like Ian Ziering and Vincent Pastore. With the high ratings DWTS has coming into season 4, Disney really disappointed me with their casting decisions this go-around, and the lower ratings are proving me right.

Where's Faith Hill? Where's Tom Hanks? Where are the A-list celebrities who Disney would have to pay a king's ransom for, but would garner AI-type ratings?
