Veronica Mars: Debasement Tapes

(S03E17) Y'know, these mini-mysteries (minsteries?) are growing on me. It's quite possible that not having to worry about a longer and larger storyline gives the writers more time to concentrate on some of the other aspects that make (or made) this show great. Hell, even the relationships are done pretty well -- from me, that's saying something.

In case you didn't notice, Paul Rudd made his appearance in this episode, and a good appearance it was. Heck, the man had some of the best lines of the episode, where -- once again -- Logan takes a backseat. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Id rather see Piz on the show than Logan at this point. Yikes! Give that boy something to do for crying out loud. And make it fun/funny.

I don't know about you, but a band would have a lot of balls to try calling itself "My Pretty Pony" and, on top of that, be successful. Does anyone know if the band was based on a real band that's around today? I definitely felt the Beatles vibe going on that Keith was talking about.

I made the mistake last week of saying that we had a full reunion of all the key characters from the season, but as was pointed out in the comments, Weevil was missing. He's got an appearance coming up before the season's over, but he's been missed. I can only hope that, should this show get picked up again, it will take place years in the future where Weevil's not a lowly (by his standards) custodian at Hearst. (Note: News is that the chances of the show getting picked up again are better now, as it may be taking a very different turn and retooling.)

Vinnie Van Lowe is one of my favorite characters from the show, and I knew as soon as Keith saw him through the camera lens that he was going to make a play for Sheriff of Neptune. It's definitely a cool twist, and I'm going to put money on Vinnie winning that election. The series does better with Keith as a PI, and to have him as Sheriff again next season would be ... boring.

Oh, and if you're racking your brain like I was over who Grace is, she's Suzanne Cryer of Two Guys, A Girl And A Pizza Place. OK, maybe it was just me.

Seeing Leo back as a deputy is great, and he's looking a lot less dorky. With Piz and possibly Logan pining for Veronica, do I smell a third suitor coming into the mix? Believe it or not, Piz may be warming up to me, but just a tiny bit.

rating 6Just for the Vinnie Van Lowe portion of the episode alone, I'm giving this episode a five on the TV Squad seven scale.

Quote(s) of the episode:

Desmond Fellows (to Piz): "Hey, Fez."
(later) Desmond (to Piz): "Hey, Pus."
(later) Desmond (to Piz): "Hey Plax."
(later) Desmond (to Piz): "Hey Pez."
(later) Desmond (to Piz): "Buzz!"
(later) Desmond (to Piz): "La Paz, capitol of Boliva -- get real, man."

I think My Pretty Pony could be like the Posies, who were big power-pop players in the '90s, had two main members, and have a slight Beatles vibe. They "broke up" in the late '90s but "reformed" just a few years later without skipping a beat. No one died in a car crash.

Okay I love Veronica Mars, but season three I feel has been really bad, that I don't really feel like watching the show anymore (I still do though because I'm a loyal fan). Since when is Veronica Mars all about who Veronica is dating? I remember when she was dating Duncan or Logan in Season 1 or 2, there were only a few scenes with them, not an entire episode based on them. And I don't like Piz and Veronica together at all, can't Veronica be by herself for awhile? And I wonder if they will ever mention Veronica's mother again?

I said it last week, i'll say it again. I like Piz. He's quirky and a little dorky but he's a really decent guy. Sure, Logan has that whole 'bad boy' thing going for him but Veronica deserves better. I think Piz could be that.

As for the rating system. I like the idea of a 'reader rating system' if you decide to abolish the rating system by the reviewer.

I wish Paul Rudd could have shared some scenes with Ken Marino--a little "Diggers"/"The Ten"/"Wet Hot American Summer" reunion

Let's also not forget that Suzanne Cryer was George's girlfriend in the "famous" YADA YADA episode of Seinfeld...

Anyways, VM continues to entertain in grand fashion, I just wish there was more Wallace and Weevil this season...

Paul Rudd was excellent in this episode. I loved how he couldn't get anyone's name right.

What no comment on Mac and Logan working together on the "Rate This Ass" website? So what was up with his teacher not letting him present the assignment? Logan looked like he was really getting into it. So is he going to become an internet mogul with cheap, sleazy websites?

I liked that one of My Little Pony's songs was called "Jesus Saves. But where does he shop?"

I really enjoyed this episode. I thought Paul Rudd did an excellent job. Rob Thomas has the coolest friends.

"About the ratings: How about making it a asymetrical scale (probably best with words), like bad, average, good, very good, instant classic, that reflects that you usually likes the shows that you review."

heinlein, that's what I would suggest, too. Instead of worst to best the rating should be more defined. A rating of 1 could mean it's an episode the reviewer won't bother catching again during summer repeats while a 7 could mean the reviewer loved it so much he or she has already replayed a couple of scenes. Otherwise we will be stuck with ratings of 5-7 for nearly every show.
