A glimmer of hope for Veronica Mars

by Richard Keller, posted May 9th 2007 9:32AM

Veronica Mars canceled? Maybe not.Apparently, the executives over at the CW network like to pull the chains of the collective viewer. Last year they did it when they said 7th Heaven and Reba weren't coming back, then they turned around and renewed them anyway. In 2007 they seem to be doing it again. This time with fan favorite Veronica Mars.

For months rumors have been flying about the apparent cancellation of VM. Now it seems that those rumors may not have as much merit as previously thought. According to Mike Ausiello over at TV Guide network executives over at the CW are taking a second look at the show, or at least the character of Veronica Mars in particular. Why the sudden change of heart? Well, there are a few reasons.

One is that there are several new spots open in the network schedule with Gilmore Girls hanging it up next week, and 7th Heaven finally coming to an end on Sunday, Since the current schedule is less than stellar, and there doesn't seem to be too much coming down the pike for the CW in the fall, there are a few new prime spots where they can place a Veronica Mars-based show.

Another reason for the turn-around is that network executives seem to be responding favorably to a new trailer by Veronica Mars series creator Rob Thomas which would place the young detective as an agent for the FBI. What would this mean for Veronica Mars the show? Well, there's a good chance that the title of the show would change, and there would probably be a major cast shake-up, which would leave star Kristen Bell as the only carryover.

So, VM fans, what do you think about this news? Would you watch Veronica Mars - FBI as long as the character remained the same in a new environment? Or, would you turn your nose at it if none of the other characters came along?

Does anybody pay attention to the news? The FBI's in the Dept of Justice, as in Alberto Gonzales, and their cases get handled by the US Attorney for their District, as in only-prosecute-Democrats-or-we'll-fire-you. The whole US Dept of Justice has become as much a crooked insider's game as Neptune ever was. So if a good villain means a good show, there's the whole crooked DOJ, with the classic comic-book Evil Genius, Karl Rove, pulling strings behind the scenes. It'd sure take a fair amount of guts to do it, though!

Am I the only one who'd love to see Mac head off to Quantico with Veronica? She's be so perfect for the FBI -- and I'd hate to see her go.

Veronica Mars was consistently one of the best shows on the tube for Seasons 1 and 2. This year the writing has faltered somewhat but the essence of the show has kept me watching. Kristen Bell is fabulous and while I will mourn the demise of Veronica Mars, seeing Kristen in a new series will be welcomed here. It would be terrific to have some of the core characters move to the new series with her. Here's hoping that Rob Thomas makes the new series a winner with Veronica fans and brings in new viewers. My only hope is that he doesn't create just another mainstream crime drama.

I would watch the new show...but I would be disappointed. Part of the greatness in this show is how Veronica and the other characters interact with each other.

Personally besides Veronica, my favorite character is her Dad. He is so funny and I love the dynamic between them. And I also love Wallace and Mac...and Logan too.

But I also trust Rob Thomas...he does good work and has many sucessful shows...sho he obviously knows what he is doing.

I guess we will see...

Veronica Mars is one of the smartest shows on television. yes, a bit unrealistic at times, but what show isn't? Veronicais a great role model for young women, and most of the dialogue when you really listen is brilliant. Unfortunately, shows like I LOVE NEW YORK, and Real World get renewed, but really good shows get long hiatuses and then when they air the rest of the season, no one watches. Anyway, VM has little shot at surviving in the FBI without her sidekicks. So sad to see her go.

well. It will not work! We love VM like it is, dont give her a job, dont push it four years in advance, might aswell move it to CBS. If its moved ahead it wont work on the CW.

I would watch Kristen Bell as Veronica in any way, shape, form, though from what I know of the FBI Veronica would have to toe the line much more. Her bending of rules would not be brooked, but then this IS tv-world where rule-bending heroes are everywhere. And this would give Rob and his fellow writers some nice challenges. But I'd still like to see Keith and Wallace survive the transition. Her ties to family and friends are a strong part of her personality.

I think I smell a spin-off: Keith Mars P.I. Think about it. He looses the election, goes back to being a private dective, solving cases. If he gets hung up on a job, he can always ring up Veronica for her thoughts, and of course have some of the people from before on there. Maybe Mac going back to being Q to the Mars clan. But of course, keep around Veronica Mars solving small time mysteries at FBI training, like who took a copy of the test for next week.

Piz? Did someone actually bring up that mangina called Piz? A woman should never date a man who has twice the estrogen she has. Seriously, put Piz around 5 women and he'll set their cycle to his own.

I've never seen Veronica Mars before, but your I'm a really huge Supernatural fan, and pointing out that two of the CW's main shows are leaving makes me hopeful that my show will be able to get some more attention.

Hope everything turns out alright for you VM fans! I have a soft spot for any form of underappricated cult show.
