American Idol: Live Results Show #11

Barry Gibb(S06E37) The theme for tonight's American Idol is appropriately enough -- The Fantastic Four. We're down to just four (soon to be three) finalists. And this past week the finalists were treated to a sneak peek at the upcoming movie, The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Of course this means the viewers at home will be treated to an extended promo for the flick before the night is out.

In preparation for an appearance by Jessica Alba, Simon and Paula have apparently swapped seats. Paula says the reason for the switch is because Jessica is hot, and then she starts counting for no apparent reason.

Paula also mocks "Simon" by caressing her bosom as Simon is apt to do. Ryan tries to insult Simon by saying, "Oddly enough he has much more to work with than you do there." But the insult only stings poor Paula, who barely has a shirt on tonight.

The judges agree that last night was difficult. As if it wasn't bad enough watching it the first time, we get the extended RECRAP (not a typo) of last night's performances. Feel free to fast forward at home! I would if I could.

Truth is we came for the results, and we don't need all that other stuff. But what's the use in complaining? We're going to have to sit through a marathon of filler until we finally find out if LaKisha or Blake is going home.

When we finally get down to the results the "Fantastic Final Four" are hugging each other, and refusing to line-up for Ryan. Somehow I can't imagine (or remember) Chris Daughtry hugging Elliot, Kat, or Hicks during last year's final four results show in which he shockingly went home. I have to say that this group does seem to really like each other a lot. It might be the most "boring" Idol as some have said, but it's also the most "lovey-dovey."

With minimal teasing, we're told that Jordin and Melinda are both safe. Which means there is no big upset this year. I think most of us assumed that either LaKisha or Blake would be facing final elimination tonight. But wouldn't it have been crazy-shocking if Melinda was booted? It certainly would have had us all buzzing tomorrow.

So it's LaKISHA vs. BLAKE.

Randy really, really doesn't know who's going home. Simon guesses that LaKisha's time is up (I'm right there with you Simon). Paula tells them that they're both tremendous talents, and she's enjoyed all their performances -- even the stinkers (my words, not hers). Part of me wants Blake to go home just for wearing that stupid tuxedo T-shirt.

Ryan calls for the traditional DIMMING OF THE LIGHTS. After 45 million votes -- BLAKE you are SAFE. LaKisha, ironically, will not be "Stayin' Alive" in the competition.

I'm not surprised. But, gosh I do hate these elimination moments. No matter how much I want to see some of these contestants leave, I always want them to stay the moment I hear they're going. To me, it's like they finally become real people -- and not just reality contestants -- the minute they are no longer in the competition. I guess it's the overflowing emotion (disappointment, heartache, relief) that makes them suddenly seem human.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Barry Gibb sings "To Love Somebody." And yeah, maybe it wasn't such a good idea to let Jordin sing it the night before. It only means we have to compare the two. Do you think Barry was including himself when he said that a couple of hundred of people have sung this song, but he hasn't heard a greater version than Jordin's? Maybe the famous falsetto ain't exactly what it used to be, but he's still Barry Gibb, a living legend. And I refuse to say anything negative about the performance. Check out this vintage clip of the Bee Gees performing the same song.
  • Pink sings "Who Knew." This is the taped performance that we were supposed to see during Idol Gives Back (but they ran out of time). Also, TMZ reported that originally Pink was supposed to sing "U+Ur Hand" until Idol's producers tried to censor the racy lyrics. I actually like "Who Knew" better anyway. Does anyone else think that Pink looks a lot like Jackie from Bravo's Work Out?
  • It's Idolmania! The Ford music video features the song that Sanjaya killed, "You Really Got Me," and Beatlemania, Fab-Four-inspired antics. My daughter thinks it's foreshadowing that the ladies drive off in the Ford, leaving poor Blake behind. But Blake isn't eliminated tonight. Still, it could be a metaphor for how the ladies leave Blake vocally in the dust.
  • There's only one thing worse than the Idolettes performing ONE hideous group number -- and that's the Idolettes performing an entire MEDLEY together. It's meant as a tribute to Barry Gibb, but it's really not much more than a mishmash of singing. I really wish they'd leave these group performances out. They obviously don't have enough time to rehearse them, and it clearly shows. I was almost happy when the performance began with a sound glitch and we couldn't hear anything. The songs destroyed in tonight's medley included such hits as, "Emotion," "Too Much Heaven," "Guilty," and "Islands in the Stream." By the way, I think LaKisha would have sounded awesome if she sang "Chain Reaction" on Tuesday night. Also, Ryan calls them "The Lewis Sisters" and I don't get it.
  • Look, it's the cast of The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in Idol's audience! Look, there's Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, and Jessica Alba. Only Jess gets to talk and talk and talk. Ryan looks nervous, like she might steal his job. At least we all know now that the movie opens ahem, sometime in June. Hey, they don't PAY me to pimp their film, so why should I give the release date?
  • In a taped video segment, the final four contestants talk about their childhoods, and we see a bunch of cute photos. Jordin looks exactly the same. Blake is super-adorable. As I mentioned once before, Blake's mom really looks like Roseanne Barr. Jordin, ever-emotional, starts to cry at the end of her interview.
  • Ryan hypes the Idols summer tour as THE BIGGEST EVER!!!! I think it's in his contract that each week he must refer to something as "THE BIGGEST EVER." We are all reminded that YES, Sanjaya will be joining the Idols on tour. As if we could forget.

  • AND American Idol is looking for a band! That's right, they are running yet another SEARCH (I wonder if it's THE BIGGEST SEARCH EVER!!) for the "best undiscovered group in America." Send your submissions to "The Band Show Casting." I'm sure you can get the details on the American Idol website.

Whew, there was a lot crammed into the hour once again, and my fingers are tired from typing. Let me know your thoughts on the results and the results show.

Next Week: Tuesday -- Top 3 perform, Wednesday -- Live Results Show #12

I am so very tired of the beat box thing. As for Jordin or Melinda, if we are talking talent, Melinda wins over the other two easily.

It is so funny to read all these post's about who's gonna win and who is gonna lose. if you have any backround in music you will clearly understand that the best is Melinda, followed by Lakisha(sorry she left) then Jordin whom has played her cards right, she laid in the bushes just kinda like getting her by then "BAM" when we get to the final contestant's she lets it out and we all think "WOW" can she sing so we flow her way and we seem to forget the real talent up there. yes i understand Melinda has sung professionaly as a back up singer but hey she is a true professional and she is very capable of being the next BIG thing on the market.did i like Lakisha? yes i did infact when it all started she was my 1st pick followed by Melinda. Is Jordin capable of winning? yes she is,but as myself and possibly others feel 17 years old may be just a tad too young for this position. yes i know many stars started when they were that age but for American Idol i am skeptical about her age. Now we have Mr.Blake...........ok, he brought us all amazement with the beat box thing and yes it was very cool on some of the songs but a little to much. also his high voice is just kinda to much at this point and he should have tried a little more harder driven tunes and got a little more raunchy sounding to let us all know what he is really capable of doing. so as i see it i dont project Blake to be the winner at this point, infact i see him being eliminated next week, then the real deal will be between Melinda and Jordin and i strongly feel america if they really understand music and talent and know whom the real talent is and will be in the future and for quite some time after A.I.is gone then your real VOTE should be with Ms.DOOLITTLE peace to all the singers whom have tried thier hardest and may you all have a great future in your future years.

sorry to see lakisha go..didnt think of her as a diva at all! if anything, she was the most quiet and polite of all..always a smile and a thankyou. as for tuesday nite..could you not hear the rasp in her voice from the get-go??no wonder she didn't 'raise' it up as barry suggested..she couldn't. whatever..she's on her way,none-the-less.
as for melinda..agree w/others..pros don't need the title, just the exposure. she's awesome for sure but the idol title belongs to the 'un'known..blake is totally TIRESOME. i love his performances because they DO keep you interested and he can move and groove to anything but yes,the beat boxing is getting old..enough Blake..just sing!! surprise us and just bring it on. if you really have it then show us. as for JORDIN?? what can you say about her at 17? she will go far..if not now..later but she will be a star some day and i think everybody knows that. i hope she does win because she WILL be under control for that first year and that WILL help her to stay centered and focused and grounded. stop picking on her..she's only a child who is about to enter a really big world. i wish all the idols this year good luck in all their endeavors. many of them will make it.
oh..and by the way..for those who think CD hits are the only way to make it big..broadway ain't too bad, either!!

I could not believe how bad Barry Gibb sang! He has really lost his voice. His teeth seemed not to fit his mouth and the other really horrifying thing about him was his see through shirt. No one, I repeat, no one wants to see an old mans nipples through his shirt.

Every one I know seems to like Jordin but I just don't get it. Something about her rubs me the wrong way. I am sick of her "cutesy face smile". This has been the most underwhelming season of American Idol. I do not care who stays or who goes. The only thing I am amused by is Simon and his comments.

My thoughts were exactly this: YES, Jordin way outsung Barry Gibb, and when he made that comment, I do believe he was including himself. In fact; all four remaining contestants outsung him. Too bad we couldn't vote him off. Not to be disrespectful, by any means. Surgeons retire when they reach a certain age, because their hands become "shaky"; and singers should do the same, when their voices become "shaky".

Throughout this entire competition, Melinda has shown that she is the best singer. Jordin has consistently sang in between the ivories. I can not understand how she has lasted this long. Tuesday the 8th was the best night she's had throughout this competition. Blake, I just love his style. Next week Jordin should finally go home-where she should have been a long time ago. Frankly, it is my opinion that Lakiesha is 150% a better singer than Jordin. Jordin should have gone home this week!!!!!!! Matter of factly, she is not as good as Princess Pea from last season and she went home too. GOODBYE 2 JORDIN---FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the only bright spot of AI which we taped and watched later (after they forced off sanjaya, our household made a decision that we would not be watching it) were the pictures of sanjaya...the small clip they played of him singing, "you really got me" and then the pics of him and the ponyhawk and the sweet pic of him kissing lakisha on the side of her head which they showed in lakisha's exit montage. it is the most (yawn) boring and predictable mess. i'm glad for one thing and that is that we were able to see that show for what it was worth with all it's manipulations and brainwashing tactics...at least i know i won't be ever taken in by it all. after reading for myself the disclaimer at the end of the show that basically gives the producers carte blanche to toss the votes or to do whatever else they would like...what's the point to it? the only plus to it is that it gives opportunity for america to take in talented/precious people that they would not ordinarily see(most of the really special ones are never appreciated by the masses but only by the ones that take time to allow their eyes to see and their ears to hear) to me it's such a delight to be able to see and hear the blessed ones that are not same-os.

I really hate to bi888 about this, but Blake's shirt last night??? He looked like the crazy uncle in your family that gets put on the porch because nobody likes to get spit on when ever he tries to talk!! I read somewhere that the contestants get a small allowance for clothing (300), so its not like they can afford a stylist, but come on!!!! I'm really hoping Stephanie will win, after the hoopla has died down, and she has access to record company finances, they will do a makeover on her. In the future when she gets glammed out we can say we remember when she looked like a school teacher! I love Jordin's voice, and at the most she will get a recording deal out of this, but my vote is for the school teacher.

Hey Roxanne #136 - I couldn't agree with you more. Very well written. It's nice to see people submit intelligent posts than the superfluous profanity of the past days blog.
