Boston Legal: Guantanamo by the Bay

by Paul Goebel, posted May 9th 2007 9:45AM

The sexy Bernadette Peters(S03E22) The opening of this episode made me laugh out loud throughout the entire credits. It's things like this that remind me why David E. Kelley is as successful as he is. So brilliant.

The line of the night had to be, "Human rights are so yesterday." I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Having Denny and Alan work on this case together was perfect. Without getting on my soapbox, I loved the statement it made about the Iraq war and the current state of the government but more importantly it pointed out that, like Alan & Denny, Americans who have different points of few can all work together for a common goal. As a liberal, who often insists he is right, I consider myself schooled.

I had my fingers crossed for Jerry the entire episode. I don't know what is stranger, a TV show actually giving viewers what they want or Christian Clemenson being what I want. He is so freaking hysterical and in such a distinctly different way than Spader and Shatner that all I can say is ... Hands up!

I want to thank my fellow reviewer Richard Keller for allowing me to take over the reviews of this show. I have always been a fan of Boston Legal and I am totally gay for William Shatner but like many shows on my schedule, I would often watch the show while on the computer or doing something else. Since I have started reviewing the show, it's necessary for me to focus while I'm watching and doing so has forced me to recognize how great BL is. Just when I think I've seen the funniest scenes, most moving dialogue and hottest women, the bar is raised (Yes, I still find Bernadette Peters sexy). Thanks again, Richard.

rating 6I give this episode a 6.

David, what does the 700 club have to do with this conversation, or are you just randomly picking from some feveredly imagined list of what you think anyone who isn't a radical lefty *must* like?

What I'm saying is that was a pretty stupid statement.

At first that younger lawyer character was putting me off by how flip he was about this torture, arrest without a subpeona, FOIA stuff - I was getting upset. But then at the end, when he talks about how this kind of lawless post 9/11 think is starting to have effect on US citizens who have nothing to do with terrorism or security I was so relieved. I hope a lot of people were watching that show - I wouldn't have put it that way but it was better than no mention.

I noticed Denny snoozing off DURING the case while Alan addressed the court. Funny stuff ... I adore Denny's character. He's hilarious.

I'm a new fan of BL and can't figure out if Alan and Denny have a gay relationship or are just pals.

It's still Paul's fault he didn't even look right after the show ended.

And malren it sounds like you hate left wingers and can't take a joke, so why do you watch? I don't watch The 700th Club unless I want a good laugh.

Folks, the "season finale" thing was my fault. I added it to the title because it was episode 22. Didn't realize there were 2 more left. Sorry about that. And my apologies to Paul.

I found it pretentious, preachy and boring. The "meta" credit opening was a re-hash of a joke David E. Kelley keeps recycling on ALL his shows. The twitchy Aspergers guy is becoming a stupid parody...no, wait, he's already a stupid parody bordering on the offensively absurd.

The preachy, soap-boxy storyline only served to remind me that David E. Kelley thinks I'm an ***hole and is using network TV time to tell me so. Lastly, why is blatant sexual harassment (by both sexes) fodder for so much comedy in his world? I guess it's only abuse when he didn't think of it as part of a "funny" script.

How exciting will it be to have Jerry back in the firm! I laughed my rear end off when he sang the theme song; it was imply hilarious -- sad to say, I do it all the time, right down to mimicking "Outlaw" at the end of the song. Did I hear correctly that Shirley said they were losing two lawyers? Has Mark Valley's pilot been picked up? Is Julie Bowen leaving?

I loved the Guantanamo Bay storyline. It's an issue I feel very strongly about (I hate the idea of torture, by the way) and found myself actually getting worked up when that smug general said that our country needs to torture people in order to find out whether or not they're innocent, and that it's necessary so our soldiers aren't hurt in Iraq. What a load of crap! Regardless, I also thought the writers did a good job of presenting the other viewpoint in the government lawyer's closing arguments.

Another great episode! I can't say I'm too excited about next week's episode, but we knew this marriage was coming.

It does make me sad Paul that you... the supposed King of TV Geeks thought this was the season finale. Staying around for the preview or even checking online would have easily shown that this was not the final episode of the season.

I appreciated this throwaway by Denny (talking to the reporters): "I have no problem with Guantanamo by the Bay. I like resorts."

Seriously, why is it when people talk about the best shows on TV this show doesn't get mentioned? I'll compare it to any show on TV today.
