eBay bidder fails to pay for General Lee

general leeRemember when the General Lee (or one of many versions) went up for auction on eBay recently and someone finally won the auction with a bid of $9,900,500?

Well, the person who made that bid, one William Fisher, has disappeared, along with the alleged $9,900,500 he was supposedly going to pay for the 1969 Dodge Charger owned by actor John Schneider (Bo Duke). The car itself was never used on the original series, but it did appear in the TV movie Dukes Go to Hollywood.

Schneider of course is upset, as is Allen Stockton, who runs Schneider's estate and put the car up on the auction site. Meanwhile, Schneider plans to still auction the car, but this time through a regular auction firm that screens potential buyers.

It was also suggested to Stockton, during the eBay auction, that he also screen bidders to make sure they had the funds to complete the auction, but Stockton said he didn't have time to do such background checks.

Of course, it's easy to say now that Stockton should have done that, but in the case of something as popular as The Dukes of Hazzard, I can't imagine why he wouldn't have done that in the first place.

What about the bidder that was second in line - the one who bid $9,900,400? Seems like a fair price to me.

That is gonna be one heck of a commission check for eBay :) Do they still collect if the buyer never pays?

Well it seems like Bo Duke done got himself in a heap of trouble, wonder if Uncle Jessie gone help in time.

That bidder was probally Boss Hogg.

From the linked article:

a customer service agent called Stockman and recommended that he only accept pre-qualified bidders who could prove that they had secured financing. But Stockman said he didn't have the time for credit or background checks.

Seriously. People tell you should verify bidders and you don't. You should KNOW there are going to fake bidders for a high profile thing like this. That's the way the eBay world is.

I blame Bo Duke.

"I HOPE THEY FIND OUT WHO DID THIS TO YOU!! Let me know if I can help!!!!"

I wonder what that means!

the feedback on buyer saying "This is the guy that for fun, decided to bid on the General Lee. Thanks...."

I think eBay ought be banning on the fraud buyer.
