Grey's Anatomy: Testing 1-2-3

Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington

(S03E24) "All rocks. Very typical." - Bailey

Speaking of typical? This episode. But trust me... after last week's spin-off installment of Grey's Anatomy, it was a welcome return to the show that I've come to expect. We weren't left without hints of what transpired last week though. Besides Sloan's incessant desire to know how Addison's week in the sun went, Dr. Montgomery was continually bombarded all episode long with pregnant women. A slap-in-the-face to help us recall what we found out last week - she can't conceive. If this keeps up into next week's finale, it'll make sense though. What better catalyst to send Addison to LA and take Naomi up on her job offer than constant reminders that she has "fossilized eggs?" Frankly, I'm not sure that I care. Addison wasn't in this episode all that much and while that says nothing about the spin-off, it proves that the original will be just fine without her.

So as the title suggests, it's intern exam day at Seattle Grace. Following the death of Susan and the slap from Thatcher (it feels weird to call him her dad), Meredith continued making appearances on her "My Life Sucks 2007 World Tour." This week's show? Staring blankly into space and not answering a single question on her exam. That's no good.

Now don't get me wrong. I feel for her. I really do, but I'm having a hard time relating to why she feels so bad about Susan's death. She knows it's not her fault, despite what Thatcher says. But Susan was in so few episodes, that I can't understand how we're supposed to buy into the relationship Meredith had with her when we as viewers never had a chance to develop one. So she's gone, and essentially all her character has been become is just another reason for Derek and Meredith to continue becoming a distant couple. At this point, I'm all for them breaking up. The show is no longer focused on Meredith and as a result her love-life is less of a concern for me. Derek should totally have taken that chick from the bar up on her offer. Me? I love free drinks.

Moving on to Rebecca Pope. Wait... who's that? Oh right, Jane Doe/Ava has a name and apparently she knew it the whole time. Now there's something I didn't see coming. Just when I thought this was starting to feel like Denny Duquette all over again, we finally get a creative twist. I'm all for this as long as she doesn't sleep with Alex, which is too bad since the only reason (other than the fact that she hates her old life) for her faking it is that she seems to have quite the crush on Karev. Fake amnesia, get waited on hand and foot by hot doctor longer. Good plan actually. So now what happens when Karev informs the police of who she is? Let's just be thankful that she has no wires attached to her that can be "cut."

Other random thoughts...

  • I'm just waiting for Callie to punch Izzie. It's gonna be hilarious. Speaking of Callie... I really hope she beats out Bailey for Chief Resident. It'd be nice to see Bailey get jaded by her career a little and perhaps spend some more time with her husband and son. She worships Weber, but she's becoming him in more ways than one.
  • Meredith got to take the exam again... but what if she still fails? That is a possibility right?
  • George's little spiel about your parents dying was pretty interesting. Your folks pass and you make bad decisions that you have to live with. He said something along those lines. Now I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time where he's come out and said that he regrets marrying Callie. That is what he meant... right?
  • I don't like Adele. Did she really need to come back? What does it matter that she's pregnant? Unless Richard is the father? How long ago was it that they were together?

rating 5So next week is the season three finale. There's supposed to be a wedding, but I'm guessing that Burke gets cold feet. Every week goes by and he seems to get more and more uneasy about his future with Cristina. Here's to hoping that our season finale isn't just a happy ending. As far as this episode goes, as I said earlier - it was a welcome return to normalcy. 5 out of 7.

The fresh cheery interns piling into the locker room really highlighted how dramatic and depressing this show has become...I too miss the lighthearted days of Thanksgiving turkey-as-surgery and hospital-wide syphillis tests!

I don't know about everyone else, but I enjoyed the old Grey's Anatomy when things were light hearted with slight drama and a good show to watch. Now it's like I'm watching a soap opera with SO much drama and wondering what Meredith will sulk about next. I mean, she spent the past 2 seasons pining away about Derek, and now he's being boyfriend of the year and she dismisses him. It's ridiculous.

Izzie and George...get real! They are best friends and she should be supportive of George and not try destroying his marriage. I hate it. I too can't wait for Callie to kick Izzie's butt!

Oh, and the fact that Meredith had to have Christina get married to prove they could have a happy life is absolutely the dumbest thing I have ever heard. These are adults, not high school girls in relationships!

I may watch it next year, I may not. I miss the stories and suspense that the first two and beginning of the third seasons held.

What happened to Meredith? When the show first started, I loved her character......now, all she wants to do is "drown", maybe she should have. She needs to get her act together because she is going to loose Derek. And Cali thinking she will be better head of surgery than Dr. Bailey.........She's crazy.......I thought she was stupid before, she has to know that George loves Izzy. It is just stupid that she wants him to go to Mercy West. Cristina's attitude about the getting married thing is aggrevating.......she better walk down that isle.

Chrysta, I think you are right. Plus, she sounded like Meredith when she said "I had a bad day, I get to be forward." Meredith does that, "......I get to be......" but Derek shouldn't be all "...yeah, you should be worried," just because a girl tried to pick up on him in a bar.

Brent, I thought Richard should have "put thatcher through a wall" I hate the character of thatcher, he is just such a jerk, I didn't like Merediths mother either.

Tiffany, OMG......you hit it right, women like sex too!

And Becki, I agree, addison would not be happy at a clinic, she need the excitement and fastness of the hospital.....I thought the elevator thing was hilarious though. I really liked the chemistry between addison and that one guy, the one who can't do commitments (Daly).

Just a thought - but as soon as it was clear there was a story with the mountain guys - I thought there could be a link with Rebecca..Jane Doe - she said her husband wanted to live at the side of a mountain.. maybe he's the guy with the axe in his head??

You know, even though George and Izzie may seem to make an odd pair, I am really hoping that they do get together. I mean, they're best friends and sometimes nothing is better than falling in love with your best friend. I think they have great chemistry together. Do they "look" right together? No, not exactly, being that Izzie is tall and gorgeous and George is...well, George...but I was surprised to see that they go really well together. As for Meredith and Derek...well, I love them, but I guess the writers need to shake the show up a little bit by either having them go through a really hard time or splitting them up for a while. I wish we had gotten to see more of them actually enjoying each other, but I guess that doesn't exactly make for good drama. Anyway, I trust Shonda Rimes and think she knows what she's doing. I'm really looking forward to the finale this week...I'm sure there will be a good cliffhanger or two to keep us interested over the long summer.

i was bored out of my mind on the two hour show last week. i did feel bad for george when izzie said she had no feelings for him and i absolutely loved the part when callie realized that izzie wasnt talking about denny. wouldnt it be funny if merideth ended up with mcsteamy?? id laugh so hard. i hope theres a cliff hanger like the one at the end of season one. (addison showing up) that was a classic.

I completly agree with josh and Jane brown everyone just stood there when Thatcher slaped Meredith and then again before the funeral do they learn I mean they must know he's going to do or say something to hurt Mer and what about the cheif wanting to act like her father then would have been a great chance for him to stand up for her not just stand there with a surprised look on his face.
Izzie and George just give it up does George not have enough guilt from sleeping with izzie just end it. Callie has been so patient with George spending a lot time with Izzie I would have made him move to Mercy West. Izzie is nothing like a surgen if she can't do her job go back to modleing. She always want the men she just can't have and she needs to learn that.
Mer and Der well Meredith sometimes I feel bad for all she has to go through and not having any family but she is so whiny and she is dark and twistie. Derek is losing interest Meredith is no longer the strong smart woman she was She's weak and shes isolating herself. People want to help her but she's not letting them in and it's not going to change soon seeing as she was just getting used to letting susan in but every time she lets anyone in something happens to push her back into her dark corner

Izzy and Meredith are both weak and whiny and unlike any surgeon I know. Neither one of them would ever survive the first year with their inability to separate their personal from their professional. Surgical residency is a dog eat dog world-no room for overly emotional sob sisters who make professional women look like idiots. Meredith did show some belated spunk when she was able to pull herself together at the end of the episode and take her exam. You have to be able to do this if you plan to cut people open-cry later if you must. Christina is the only believable intern. The attendings would be fired for their affairs with their students. It would be a shame to lose Callie's character. K

About Meredith, she never actually mourned her own mother. This is all about families with her, hence why she keeps saying irrationally to the Cheif that he's not her Dad, I mean who else hasn't been her Dad either but Thatcher. Thatcher says that his wife was all he had when in fact he had Meredith, and him saying it over and over again just rejects Meredith over and over, just like when he left her and her mom, just like when he wasn't there for her when her mother died. Withdrawl like Meredith's is anger, all of it coming back up to the surface again. It's all this pain just flooding in destroying the very thing that Susan was trying to establish, which was that they were family

As for Callie [spoiler!] she's not signed for next year, so whatever. This is just to get Miranda's family back in the mix and maybe why she wouldn't want to be grooomed for ultimately, Chief of Surgery. Callie was a great back when they were actually developing her character and now she is just a foil for the BORING Izzie. What a waste of a good, beautiful actress and an interesting surgeon role (physical, not a waif). I mean I can take a million Merediths over one more episode of Izzie moping over love. I think she just destroys men, and I'd like that character to turn into a real surgeon instead.

And as for Ms Pope, I thought she said she only had her momory for the last 2 days, not for the entire time. Fact check here?

Meredith is in shock. She lost her mother. Then she lost Susan, who was the only link between she and her dad, the only way she was making any headway on a relationship with him. When he yelled at Meredith before the funeral, he said "She was the only thing I had left...". That was very revealing, as he also has Meredith but he doesn't see her as part of him, a part of his life.
