The Daily Show: May 10, 2007

by Annie Wu, posted May 11th 2007 1:52AM
Jon Stewart"Mess O' Potomac": Bush delivered an interesting little speech to the Associated General Contractors of America, and it raised a few eyebrows. Baghdad Bureau Chief Aasif Mandvi talked about Bush's views and expectations of Iraq. That Baltimore line was brilliant. It's funny because it's true!... and really scary! I recently moved to Baltimore, so I've looked up all the crazy statistics. Did you know that the city's murder rate is five times that of New York City? Yeah. Cue "The More You Know" star.

"The Blair Ditch Project": Tony Blair has announced that he will step down in June. Naturally, we looked to London Bureau Chief John Oliver for more information. His exaggerated British-ness was so Richard Quest, it was scary. I was slightly confused, because the exchange between Jon and John totally contradicted their last Quest-related exchange. I was glad to see that John felt the same way. By the way, that "old" footage of Jon Stewart was amazing.

The night's guest was Reza Aslan, CBS' resident dreamboat and author of No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam. Of course, the topic of discussion was our current administration and Iraq. Aslan is a show favorite, but this interview wasn't much different from his other appearances. Still good, though.

Jon/Stephen: Stephen Colbert had an interesting night with Jane Fonda. Moment of Zen: Damn it! I looked away from the television to look for the Jane Fonda link, and I missed the Moment of Zen. Damn my lack of TiVo.

I used to live in Maryland, so I got a good laugh out of the Baltimore comment. I would've laughed at the joke about the DC sniper targeting white people if it was accurate. I believe one of the victims was Hispanic. There might have even been a black victim, but I don't recall.

Joking about mostly young, mostly minority men killing each other over drug turf in post industrial inner city America.Ha Ha. FYI DC's murder rate usually outpaces Baltimore's , except for recent years where some of the mayhem has been gentrifyed out of town into inner ring suburbs of PG county.

As a former resident, I loved the Baltimore comment, too. I actually found your blog looking for the exact wording of the joke.

I believe the moment of zen was that clip of Bush walking in his bomber jacket walking with Blair in his sweater and waving to the cameras.
