The Upfronts: The CW

by Julia Ward, posted May 17th 2007 12:18PM
cw upfrontsThe CW announced its 2007-08 prime-time schedule today. Just in its second year, The CW is still looking for a home run and is sticking with a programming strategy of short-run reality shows and dramas with young adult appeal.

The big news is no news. Veronica Mars was not announced as part of the Fall line-up, but according to rumors, The CW is waiting until June 15th to decide the gal detective's fate. This is supposed to give Rob Thomas enough time to whip up a "Veronica in the FBI" script. (Update: Ausiello reports from the press conference that Veronica Mars is dead, though "something else" may be coming up.)

One Tree Hill is going to do a ctrl-alt-del. Returning mid-season, the show is going to jump four years into the future - after its characters have graduated from college. Online journal entries are going to chronicle the missing years. On Everybody Hates Chris, Chris Rock will finally appear on the show -- as the school guidance councilor!

The more interesting pick of the newbie litter - Josh Schwartz, creator of The O.C., is back with Gossip Girl based on the popular book series of the same name and Kevin Smith directed the pilot episode of the new series Reaper.

The CW's good, bad and ugly after the jump:

Returning: Everybody Hates Chris; America's Next Top Model; The Game; Girlfriends; Smallville; Supernatural; One Tree Hill (mid-season); Pussycat Dolls: The Search for the Next Doll; WWE SmackDown!

Out: All of Us; Gilmore Girls; Reba; Runaway; Seventh Heaven; Veronica Mars

New: Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants; Hidden Palms (Premieres on May 30th); Aliens in America; Gossip Girl; Reaper; Life is Wild; Online Nation (formerly Viewsers); CW Now; Farmer Takes a Wife

Moving: Beauty and the Geek (Tuesdays at 8PM)

Detailed descriptions of new shows:

Aliens in America: Single-camera comedy about an unpopular 16-year-old and a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim who comes to live with the boy's family in Wisconsin as an exchange student.

Gossip Girl: Drama based on the popular book series, about the world of privileged teenagers attending elite private schools in New York City as told through the eyes of an anonymous blogger.

Reaper: Drama about a young man who essentially becomes Satan's bounty hunter, reclaiming souls that have somehow escaped from hell.

Life is Wild
: Drama about a New York veterinarian who moves his second wife and their two sets of children to a South African game reserve run by his father-in-law.

Crowned: An eight-episode competition that features multiple mother-daughter teams working together as pairs to win a beauty pageant competition.

CW Now:
An Entertainment Tonight-style show focused on popular culture.

Online Nation
(formerly Viewsers): Series which showcases user generated videos with the most popular making the cut from week to week.

Farmer Takes a Wife: A dating show about, you know, farmers.

CW'S, Dash 4 Cash sounds really cool. A behind the scene reality show with six teams, all competing against each other to win, no matter. The cast looks great and I heard the acting was amazing. I hope CW ads this show to their midseason line up, as I feel it would do really well.

I am so disappointed that Dash 4 Cash, has not been picked up yet. I am hoping it will for midseason, as it sounds really good. Very different from any of the programs on now. I think it would have a huge following if given a chance. CW needs this show to help boost its falling ratings.

Okay Then

Reaper? Seriously?

This show has basically taken from every other plot of it's genre and tries to stick it as a comedy/drama and wants to pass it off as a cool new show. Hey, remember Dead Like Me? Or even that crappy movie Nicholas Cage was in...Ghost Rider or something like that. Oh yeah, they're even stealing plots from a show that's on the SAME NETWORK!

Now I've heard of battling networks taking shows from each other to try and gain some of it's audience (examples include: Medium vs. Ghost Whisperer, Nanny 911 vs. Supernanny, Wifeswap vs. Trading Spouses, Extreme Makeover Home Edition vs. 3 Wishes) But I guess the CW is DESPERATE enough to steal from a show that is already on it's network. Supernatural!

Ok so I saw previews to Reaper and all it is, is basically a knock-off version of Supernatural, but claims it's completely different as it has a more "comedic" tone to it (and to anyone who hasn't seen Supernatural, there is a lot of humor in it so I have no idea what the heck those people at Reaper are thinking).

The main character's name is Sam in Reaper (main character in Supernatural is Sam).

Sam in Reaper must work for the devil and send things back to Hell (Sam in Supernatural is chosen by the demon to help lead his army and also sends things back to Hell).

Sam in Reaper must kill things that escaped from Hell with the help of his best friend (Sam in Supernatural kills Supernatural things, some of which also escaped from Hell, with the help of his brother Dean who is his best friend)

Sam and his friend in Reaper wear silly Ghostbuster outfits and try to hunt down these supernatural things (Sam and Dean from Supernatural don't wear those idiotic outfits...but many times they've been asked by people if they were modern day ghostbusters. But on occasion Sam and Dean have to wear disguises/outfits to sneak into places to try and hunt down the supernatural)

Sam in Reaper can move things with his mind (Sam in Supernatural can move things with his mind)

The Devil in Reaper chose Sam's fate about his life when he was a baby (Sam in Supernatural was chosen by the demon about how he would later be forced to work for the demon as a baby).

So to anyone who wants to watch Reaper and think it looks exciting, news flash! You've already seen it before! Heck if you want to watch Reaper, you might as well pick up a copy of a season of Supernatural since they're basically the same thing (plus Supernatural's leads are much better looking and the plot is so much cooler than a dude being Satan's bounty hunter and it's exciting).

Reaper looks good. Too bad not enough people watched veronica mars to have them keep it on the schedule. It's Kristen's voice narrating Gossip G. Maybe she will make an appearance there?

Still feeling that the end of the WB/UPN deal was a terrible decision and after all this time the CW hasn't proved itself as contender, keeping the best shows or intro'ing new shows.

While it is very sad about Gilmore Girls - this was more or less expected. It took weeks for the show to even get its groove back (in a much lesser version than ASP's creation) and it really had very little move to grow. Just recall the episodes when Rory started Yale and you can only imagine the struggle it would be to keep the mother-daughter relationship.

Veronica Mars - One more season before hitting the cancel button may have made quite a difference.

Girlfriends - This show is so over more than any of the shows cancelled or who season finaled out. There is just retreads of storylines - these ladies have grown out of their roles and it is just plain boring.

One Tree Hill - reading a show online and then - voila - everyone is years into the future in the Spring - what a waste.

The few wise choices from the combined networks seems like they will hold their fan base - yet one has to wonder about the new shows and the rest.

Oh yes - almost forgot What About Chris which still has its moments. Thankfully the CW has in its corner the fact that the main characters haven't aged out yet.

WOW! Girlfriends returns! I hope they bring Toni back next season. As much as I dislike that character, the show isn't the same without her. It's not like she is busy...other than the Bailey's commercials.

the CW has lost another viewer....no VMars?!?!?! What were they thinking?!?!? Good idea---let's cancel an intelligent, witty, unique show in place of"america's next top skank" reruns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll never watch the channel EVER again...guess they only want viewers under age 21 judging by their moronic new lineup.
