Grey's Anatomy: Didn't We Almost Have It All (season finale)

(S03E25) For all the negative stuff that's been said about Grey's Anatomy this season, I think they turned out a pretty solid season finale. It made sense, stories ended logically, and let's be honest - it was way better than last season's "prom in a hospital" mess. All the bases were covered. The exams, the wedding, the Meredith/McDreamy relationship status, and the race for chief. Of course the one thing on everyone's mind (the identity of Derek's flirtatious bar encounter) was revealed too. I'm not overly obsessed with what happens next. It was just a comfortable ending with some questions that I'm in no rush to get answers to. I like where that leaves us though because it means we can start fresh in the fourth season and hopefully leave behind some of the things that made this season so lackluster.

So let's analyze the questions that are up in the air. What about Chief of Surgery? Weber offered it to Derek, but Derek turned it down, instead suggesting that Weber come back and take the job in a new direction. Do it differently. So the question is will Weber come back? This whole season he's been such a proponent of family values (which is partly why I think he gave Chief Resident to Callie over Bailey), and now that he has a legit chance to make things work with Adele again? That being the case, I honestly don't see him coming back.

Which relates directly to Meredith and Derek. They're on the outs. Things aren't good and I think Derek put it best when he said that he's in it more than she is. I think he's finally starting to realize that she's been holding him back and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he changes his mind in the fall premiere and goes back to Weber, to take the job. I think most will agree it's better when Meredith and Derek aren't together and as the show has progressed, I think it's become clear that they don't really work. But like all great shows, I think we can assume they'll end up embracing in the series finale... whenever that happens.

It's gonna get more complicated with the arrival of McBar Skank a.k.a. Lexie Grey a.k.a. Meredith's half-sister. She's part of the new crop of interns. Slightly clichéd, but I think it adds a nice layer. She's all sweet and fluffy, but what are her real intentions? If she's anything like her kin, she isn't going to waste any time getting what she wants. She just lost a mother too, but I don't think she's as prone to depression as Meredith. Her attitude may be a welcome change for Derek if he chooses to pursue her. Incidentally, the actress who plays Lexie (Chyler Leigh) has been offered a 13 episode arc next season... so something is brewing.

Moving on... the wedding. Or lack thereof. I'll be brief about this one only because I've despised this storyline all season. Thank god Burke came to his senses! Cristina is selfish, self-centered, far too career driven, and completely oblivious to the feelings of those around her. Why would you want that woman to be your wife? Seeing as how Burke only packed up his trumpet, CD collection, and lucky scrub hat, I'm thinking he'll be back though.

Other stuff and a few predictions...

  • Ava/Jane Doe/Rebecca Pope ended up being a weird Denny Duquette story after all. She fell for Alex was the twist. It's almost a little Stockholm Syndrome-ish. Regardless, it bugged me and I'm glad she left. I'm disappointed that Alex went back after her though. Weird.
  • I was waiting for it all episode, but Weber finally gave us the words that officially "create" Private Practice. He told Addison that if she isn't happy, then go get a new life... or something like that. Guess what! Her new life has talking elevators and that guy from Wings!
  • George failed the intern exam and he's obviously not going to repeat the year again. So what's next? Well I doubt he's going to stay with Callie... although, she is loaded. To me this screams some kind of "need to find myself" story that will take up at least 6 episodes. When he finds himself? I bet he becomes an EMT. It's the only thing that makes sense to me that'll still keep him involved.
  • The mountain climber story turned out to be far less exciting than I was hoping.

rating 6So what does everyone else think? Is George going to admit he has feelings for Izzie too? Is Bailey going to get more involved with her young son's life? Will Weber come back? How long before Meredith realizes who Lexie is? Lots of questions, but as I said... no rush to find out the answers. Kudos to Shonda Rhimes and Co. for making it up to us. For once we can stop obsessing over the show that everyone is obsessing about. 6 out of 7.

It has been 2 months since the season finale of Greys, but after reading some of these comments I am still as angry as I was the day after the finale.

The final episode of Greys was a complete and total disappointment. I knew it would be hard to top season 2; however, season 3 broke my heart. I was left sad and bittter after the last episode, and I definitely hated a majority of the characters.

Now I am reading that the new Grey sister is going to be a regular on the show... ridiculous.. so I'm already feeling disappointed with season 4. I hope the writers have a plan to turn this season around, because I am already having doubts about the show (especially since Addison and Burke are no longer on it and all new characters are joining!!).

Quote from Kate:A dismal ending to a dismal season. The writers have assassinated characters and the storylines seem to have been written by middle-schoolers.

I agree with kate. It was a dismal ending. For a romantic soap this season finale was dismal and depressing. The writers must be out of ideas.

well, i liked and didn't like the show. i think personally the first season and the second season where the best ever. they had love, laughs and enough to make you some what out of your mind. the third season half was so good until they did the thing agian with mer/der i mean come on there relationship is no where normal at all. i didn't like that christina didn't want to get married and how lexie the girl from the bar had to be mers step sister with the brains who the dad is so proud of. i mean no wonder her life is a reck her dad pushed her a way and her mother was to busy for her. but anyways i get to worked up about this show.

i just think they shouldn't have done the 180 on mer/der relationship. cause we all know that either he will end up with the sister sleep with and end up with mer just more drama instead of the laughs like the first two season they are my favorite. me i have high hopes for the mcdreamy/mer relationship i love them together they just need a healthy relationship like the first season and half of the third. mer/der all the way

I found the finale so depressing. Every single character was left in a state of depression. Now i love Grey's Anatomy and as seasons go i found season 3 to be just as good as previous seasons but the finale was truly irritating on many levels. The biggest gripe I have is with the Izzie and George love affair. Totally unbelievable, I mean their relationship for 3 seasons has been based upon their 'strong friendship' with absolutely no hint of sexual tension or anything and then out of nowhere they are having sex. It totally destroyed what was one of the only stable relationships on the show. It really felt like it was happening for the sake of it. The wedding disaster was irritating and as for Derek and Meredith, why can't anything work out?- I feel the show suffers from Ally McBeal syndrome where the main and title character is unlikable and irrational but yet the supporting cast are so good they keep you interested. Meredith is such a hard character to feel for. I hate the father and throwing the sister in was also really annoying. Again its just drama for the sake of it. I don't know about anyone else but I love Addison and think the show will miss her. To an extent her character didn't have a place but she could of got with Sloane or Alex. I'm looking forward to season 4 but really hope the stupid George/Izzie thing goes away!

I am getting so tired of whining Izzy. She never wanted to be romantically involved with George until he married Callie. Leave the guy alone and give the marriage a chance. Show more of Bailey she is the onlyreal person with focus on the show.

This is just a thought. What if Meredith and George has anrelationship. Callie and Alex also has a relationship. Burke and christina get married an have a kid. I don't know I'm just wanting something new to happen and for grey's anatomy to be funny again and not a soap opera.

My favorite show is turning away from what made it great, the sub plots of the patients needing care for weird and wacky ailments. I've been burned before in Northern Exposure, Ed, and Gilmore Girls from too much who is zoomin' whom. Just give me some good old fashioned quirky human interest stories and stay away from too many bedtime stories. And Kate Walsh's new series looks like a real bomb.

Everyone who says that they won't be back for the fall season is totally full of it! You know you'll be back because no matter how twisted and ridiculous things may seem - you gotta know what happens next girl! And as for George, I bet he didn't really fail his final exam - has anyone thought of that yet?! I bet they messed up correcting his exam or he missed a bubble on the bubble sheet - everyone knows how easy that is to do. As for Merideth and McDreamy everyone knows they will eventually end up together - and who would honestly want to watch it happen in a smooth way? This is a drama people. All these things you are complaining about are the same reasons you watch the show.
