Supernatural: All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 2 (season finale)

Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver - Supernatural
(S02E22) "Something big is going down. End of the world big."

The big season finale picked up right where we left off. Sam really is dead. As we found out later in the episode, Jake (Aldis Hodge) cut right through his spinal cord. It made for a nice scene for Jensen Ackles. We've seen time and again how focused Dean is on protecting Sam. So, in a move that surprised nobody, Dean went down to the crossroads, fell down on his knees...

Of course Sam wasn't going to stay dead. A lot of shows have done a lot of crazy things over the years, but that wasn't going to be added to the list. Even though we knew he was coming back, I liked the way that they handled it. Ona Grauer was delightfully evil as the deal-making demon. She went from mocking Dean's situation to something of a supernatural used-car salesman. "I shouldn't be doing this. I could get in a lot of trouble." I almost expected her to say she had to go talk to her sales manager. Her giving Dean one more year worked out perfect. It brought Sam back into the game, and set up what will be one of the major plots for the just announced season three.

The reunion with Sam and Dean was interesting. Dean told the lie that you knew would never hold up when he said that Bobby (Jim Beaver) had patched Sam up. Sam had his own little lie of omission though, when he talked about the demon (Fredric Lane) coming to him in a dream. He left out that little bit about his mother, and her possible relationship with the demon. I thought we would be getting some more info on that, but now am left wondering if that is a season three thing, or just to be taken as the demon messing with Sam.

Bobby's reaction to seeing Sam up and about was perfect. He gave Dean the big ol' stink-eye, while not letting on to Sam what was going on. It was good to see that Ellen (Samantha Ferris) made it out of the Roadhouse, although Ash will be missed. He did have one last huge revelation for the team though.

We finally got the answer regarding just what the demon needed that one special child for. The whole story with Samuel Colt building a giant devil's trap with five churches and rail lines was very clever. It ties in nicely with the story of him building the demon killing gun and opens up future story possibilities. I'd be up for some sort of a flashback episode in the future that delves a little deeper into just what Samuel was up to in the old west demon hunting days.

The big showdown that we have been waiting some 43 episodes for finally came, and with one small exception, it was pretty good. The effects of the demons rushing out of the gates of hell weren't very good. That is a small gripe though, and they were more than made up for by the shot of Dean firing the Colt, and the effect that bullet had on the demon. Very cool looking bit of action right there.

It was great to see John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) back, having clawed his way out of hell when the gates opened. He had one last chance to save his boys and he took it. The silence in the aftermath of everything going down was an odd choice. I expected John to have some touching exchange with Sam and Dean, but I think the silent, shared moment worked well too. It was a bit of an awe-inspiring scene for the characters. After everything they have been through over the years, they finally got him. What do you say about that?

I think it is pretty clear that the fate of Supernatural was up in the air when they were making this episode. Had it not been renewed, this would have worked very nicely as a series ender. Fortunately, with the uncounted demons that made it out of the gates, it also works as a setup to that third season. As Bobby said, "Hope to hell you boys are ready, 'cause the war has just begun." Add that to Sam and Dean's quest to get Dean off the hook before the end of the season and season three is already looking like a heck of a ride.

6 out of 7I'm giving this episode, and the season as a whole, a 6, out of 7. It was a fun ride that balanced the big story with the fun adventures very well. The Supernatural team has really found their groove now and I look forward to seeing where a third season takes us.

"Though it was kind of Ghost Rider-ish, or maybe sorta like that show on Fox where the guy had tatoos on his body and for each soul he sent back to hell, the tatoo came off. I think Lori Petty was in that."

That would be Brimstone, starring Peter Horton and John Glover (who, coincidentally is now in Smallville). It was a great show, but they only made 7 episodes.

My thought on the whole revelation with their mom is that maybe she was a bit psychic herself. I mean, I'm sure Sam had to get it from somewhere, maybe it runs in the family? It would make sense in a way.

I am a littel confused, as we know the gun was used to open the door of hell, so don't you think the demon was so stupit to keep the last one bullet which could kill him in the gun?

PS:I am not a native speaker,so...I hope my words could be understanded.
I live in China, though Prision Break is the most pop American drama here but my favourite two are Supernatural and Heroes.
By the way, your blog is really great I like your comments and i have been concerning your comments for 2 weeks, also it is my first time to leave message~

I wonder if we'll see any Alona Tal next season, she wasn't killed in the roadhouse presumably since she's off doing her own hunting (although I could be having a major brain fart about her fate instead).

More VM Alumni in every WB show! :)

...Crossing into the devil's trap couldn't be the only thing the yellow-eyed demon needed the special children for. He could have used any human to cross the trap. There's got to be more to this story.....

Yellow eyes wanted a leader for the souls he'd planned to let out of hell in an orderly fashion. Remember part one? He told Sam in the dream that was what the head games with the psychic kids were for. He was seeing which one would emerge victorious, the most ruthless, so he/she could lead. That's why he let Sam live initially. He wanted him on the road, toughening him up.

I agree, though, that how Mary knew the demon will eventually come up again. All in all, I really liked this episode for its emotional content and the emotionally charged set up for next season. Dean and Sam on the road again--chasing monsters, but the clock is ticking, and Dean has the person he sacrificed his soul for sitting right next to him in the car. That's going to cause conflict and stress.

Bobby rocked my world. When he was taking Dean to task after he realized what Dean had done, telling him he wanted to throttle him, asking Dean why he thought he was worthless.....that's good stuff.

I couldn't stop crying last week, but this week it was more the screaming/squealing/gasping/flailing sort of stuff. Maybe it was the leftover high from the Office finale. That's not to say that I didn't cry, of course. Dean's love for Sam above all else gets me every time. His monologue over Sam's body was just extrodinairy, and the ending scene with him and Sam discussing how they'd do anything for each other is just the sweetest thing I think I've ever seen on this show. And although we know that they're going to find a way out of Dean's deal, the boys don't know that. And with only one more year left together you know that we're gonna see a lot more hugging and sweet talk. And Sam's gonna drive the car. (He actually ate something this week, did you see?!)
It was great to see their dad again, helping to take down the demon that destroyed his family. I can't believe that the Yellow-Eyed Demon is finally dead. It's been the driving mission behind the Winchesters for the past two seasons, or almost twenty-five years for them. But I guess now we have to deal with Dean's eminent death and Sam's ever more likely turn to the dark side.
Yeah, I love Bobby too. :) I really like Ellen as a character, but I'm suspicious of her. Someone knew that Ash was up to something, and someone had to help burn that building down. I don't believe the whole pretzels story. Someone also sold out the boys back in Hunted, and she's been there both occasions and knows all about the Winchesters. She's had the oppertunity and passing the holy water test doesn't mean that she doesn't have evil intentions. I like her and I don't really want her to be evil, but a lot of the peices fit together. Of course, she did help close the gates of hell (needed to stay on the boys' good side for just a little bit longer?), and I missed the first half of this season so I don't know as much about her character as other viewers do, so I could just be reading into this wrong. Just a theory I have.

I can't wait for next season!! Demon slaying, brother hugging, and Mary secrets!!!

Executioner Sam looked seriously psycho. He's definitely gone Dark Side.
