Desperate Housewives: Getting Married Today (season finale)

by Jen Creer, posted May 20th 2007 11:39PM
desperate housewives(S03E23) I have to admit, I swore at the end of this episode/season Edie was going to end up getting pregnant. I was so not expecting this. If you haven't watched tonight's episode yet, I suggest you stop reading now and NOT click on the link for the rest of the post.

Gaby
Let's go ahead and start with Gaby since today was her big day. Her little hissy fit that Bree was late certainly took on new meaning after seeing her fight with Victor from the night before. Wow, how many excuses is she going to make for him? It's not too late to get the wedding annulled, or is it? He and his father seem to have a lot of power, and I am not convinced she could get out of the marriage at this point. I think they would do what they could to stop her, regardless of what that might entail.

Was anybody else distracted by the fact that Victor's father was played by Mike Farrell (B.J. from M*A*S*H)? I didn't think he looked or seemed old enough to play Victor's father and that threw me off. Other than the age though, I thought he did a really great job because his delivery is just so, "I'm a really nice guy," even when he is saying completely creepy things. I didn't love Gaby starting an affair with Carlos right after her marriage to Victor. That wasn't because I thought it was immoral or that Victor deserved better - I'm afraid Carlos is going to get whacked!

Edie
Speaking of whacked, I wasn't expecting Edit to kill herself. Whoa. Now. We all know that chances are that Edie isn't actually dead. This is television after all. But I didn't think she would be distraught enough for a suicide attempt. I really thought she would end up pregnant at the end of this episode, and that she and Carlos would continue to be an item. I think somebody (probably Carlos) will come in and save Edie, but I wonder what will happen next. Carlos definitely seems like the kind of guy to get back together with her (look at me continuing to assume she's still alive!) because he doesn't want her to hurt herself again. But what does that mean for him and Gaby? Sticky...messy...can't wait for Season 4!

Bree
It was so great to see Bree again! I forgot how much I've missed Marcia Cross's delivery. I love the fact that she is pretending to be pregnant so she can raise Danielle's child, and I love the fact that she has stuck Danielle in a convent. I predicted that she was faking the pregnancy even before Orson pulled off her velcro uterus. Did you? Or did you think Orson was just being super understanding about the fact that Bree slept with someone else? What a great way to explain any baby weight Marcia Cross may still have from her own real-life pregnancy (not that I noticed any), and what a typically Bree way to handle Danielle's pregnancy. How long before she gets caught?

Lynnette
There was already so much going in with this episode, but the Lynnette storyline could have been an entire show in and of itself. We got so many facts about Lynnette's life (and also why she is such a control freak, though not in Bree's genteel control freak way) from the barbs she tossed off about her mother. But I love how her mother dug her heels in, manipulated the kids, shamed and guilted Lynnette, and then finally brought home the real point of her visit: Lynnette can't take care of cancer on her own. She can't fight her mother and the cancer both. And, despite her bitterness, despite her stubbornness, perhaps it is more important to fight the cancer.

Susan
The conclusion with Susan and Mike getting married, paired with the Edie shocker are why I am giving this episode such a high rating. I thought Susan and Mike's wedding was romantic and perfect. And maybe that is because when I got married two years ago, I got married outside with only two close friends and my son present. So, I loved it. Good for Susan for figuring out that this is exactly the kind of wedding she and Mike needed, and good for her, for once, for not trying to keep up with the Jones Gaby.

rating 7This was a stand-out episode. This season has been wobbly and uneven, and at times downright painful to watch, but they have brought the show back magnificently. Nicely done. I am giving this episode the highest rating because this is how season finales should be done:

how can people say they hate eddie....we will miss somone as adventurous as her in season4 thats why i hope she dosen`t die. what i dont get is why she wasnt ready to give carlos a baby if she wanted him that bad...but i kinda like her reason to make her love her for who she is....im so unhappy with gabby right now she is so used to getting what she wanted thats why i wanted carlos not to end up with her again...i think lynette`s husband is the most caring man unset....the susan is just confused why did she pick ian when she had a chance to pick mike...

I wonder if anyone else (besides me) thinks Danielle's child is going to be related to an Applewhite rather than the Brit's. (Danielle was with Applewhite's son, and then Edie's nephew....)

Or have I got the timing wrong? It just seems like a DW twist because really, how could Bree pull THAT off?

I know everyone's entitled to their opinion, but how did tom deserve what lynette was doing? What exactly did he do wrong in their relationship to deserve to theoretically be cheated on? Also, bree faking the pregnancy shouldn't be seen as a kind gesture towards her daughter. Are you that blind? She's ASHAMED of her daughter getting knocked up while still in high school. Bree is a nice woman, but first and foremost she's extremely wary of what people think of her and her family. She's constantly lying to cover up any embarrassing situations.

Although it wasn't obvious until Edie's dream, apparently her clock was ticking -- not the baby clock, but the one to find a man to settle down with clock. She still has a few years left to look hot, but not that many.

So I can see her being upset enough to attempt to take her life. But I also wonder if it's a manipulation, since she's been doing that even more than usual lately. I've watched movies where they had a certain kind of knot that doesn't actually hang someone.

I think Danielle's teacher was light-skinned enough that a baby between them wouldn't be noticeable. But she did have a thing with the former neighbor that was black (the one with the brother in the basement). I can't remember the timeline though, but it would be great TV it the baby turned out to be his.

I got closure from Susan finally marrying Mike, but like others, wonder where they'll go next. Maybe she'll find out she's pregnant, and then everyone will wonder whose child it is.

Why didn't Gaby leave when she heard her new husband real plans, and how creepy he is? Gaby is big on money, and also revenge. Leaving him right then wouldn't have gotten her much of either.

Lynette's mother will add a lot to next season's story. I've actually liked Tom the last few episodes, well at times anyway 8^) It seems that when things are milk and honey, he's a brat, but when things get rough, deep down he's a decent guy. But he still needs a lot more polishing to bring that out when times aren't so dire.

I enjoy Desperate Housewives very much, and liked the finale too, but I have to say as a viewer of daytime soaps, (ABC ones no less), the writers have stolen several ideas from them this year. Edie's birth control caper - that was done by Erika Kane 30 years ago! (to similar results); the fake pregnancy - also done on "All my Children" a couple of years ago. I hope the writers get a few more original ideas next year to keep the series fresh. I can't wait!

"He doesn't appear to be the old son, conniving, gay, selfish ect. person."

You probably didn't mean the way it sounded, but it seemed like you were equating being gay with being selfish and conniving. In any case, he's still gay. He has given a line or two here and there about thinking a guy is cute and/or sleeping with guys (like the bus boy at the pizza joint).

Ok, I fell a sleep really early on Sunday and missed the episode. Then that mean, angry, American-bashing, beattchhh, Rosie ruined the ending for me on Monday when I accidentally watched The View and w/out any warning she gave away the ending. So the ending shocker was totally spoiled for me. Thanks Rosie! Can't wait until you leave the show!

But anyways, I only caught an hour of the episode because @ abc.com they don't post the whole 2 hour finale. What's up w/ that?

But the part of the finale I did see I so good. I loved the part where the kid guys to Carlos, "I am going to need cash." I thought that was hilarious. And, finally, Susan did something (the secret wedding) that didn't annoy me. So the part of the finale I did see I really liked. And I thought this finale was a welcome relief from the disappointment that was Grey's finale. I think it was a great finale, and I can’t wait to see the whole thing.

However, I have a bone to pick about the review. I didn't think this season was uneven at all. Yes, last season was terrible. But I thought this season was great. There were a couple episodes that weren't great, but overall, I thought this was a great season. Almost every episode has been really funny and although the drama started off a little slow this season, I thought the humor made up for it. I thought it was a great season and great finale!!!!!!!!!!!!
