CBS teases "closure" for Jericho fans

by Brett Love, posted May 21st 2007 11:43AM
JerichoAll of you Jericho fans out there writing letters, sending emails, and signing petitions can give yourself a pat on the back. The show hasn't been brought back from cancellation yet, but getting the President of CBS Entertainment to post an update is no small feat.

That President, Nina Tassler, posted an update to all of the fans on the Jericho Wiki over the weekend. You can read the full statement at the CBS site. In a nutshell, she says it was a hard decision, thanks the fans for their support, and teases that in the coming weeks they hope to develop a way to provide closure to the Jericho story.

That's the sticky wicket right there. "Develop" seems to imply the possibility of a tv movie, or maybe even a mini-series, to wrap things up. But we have been down this road before, where the closure came in the form of notes from the producers regarding what was planned. I think a movie or mini-series could work really well. There is already a built in audience, and it couldn't do any worse than whatever touchy-feely Hallmark movie event starring Valerie Bertinelli is already on the drawing board. Obviously, bringing the series back is the main goal for the fans, but what would you settle for?

[ thanks Jonathon ]

HBO promised the Deadwood fans movies, too. Ha ha. Nothing yet, and probably never. CBS is realizing they made a mistake, so hopefully something might happen. I will believe it when I see it. I wrote to CBS every week for months, telling them what a great show it was. At least I tried.

The Jericho story has captured the imagination of all age groups. Jericho is a treasure, let's hope CBS and Paramount realize that, and put it back on the "Season Track" before it is too late, and writers, producers, and actors go elsewhere.

Television Networks need to realize that they cannot keep cancelling TV series with building storylines in mid-plot. Viewers are becoming cynical and reluctant to start watching, and get hookied by, "serialized" TV Shows like Invasion, Surface, Jericho, etc., only to have a network cancel them on a cliff hanger.

If CBS needed to make room for more Reality TV shows, they would have been better advised to choose one of the ageing CSI clones, or even Numbers.

If CBS does not pick up Jericho for at least another season, they risk millions of angry viewers turning elsewhere for their TV entertainment. This is not a smart move for CBS.

I stopped watching this show a few seasons in because I didn't like the 'Lost'-like story technique, and wasnt a fan of Ulrich, plus Gerald McRaney kept reminding me I was watching a CBS drama and made me feel like Matlock-hugging geezer.

Can someone post a paragraph about what the show has disclosed so far?

My husband and I absolutely love Jericho. We were faithful viewers. We never missed an episode. It was one of the few shows we watched together. We would like to see it return or at least see an ending. As for the other CBS shows, keep up the good work.

the show was pure propaganda, from start to [premature] end... it got it's point across. beyond that it served no purpose... as someone else posted here, the only really interesting thing was the Hawkins plot about "why?"... once that was done....

I CONSIDER JERICHO AND LOST THE BEST 2 SHOWS ON TELEVISION AND I THINK JUST LIKE 'LOST' - JERICHO IS A DIFFERENT AND INTRIGUING NEW KIND OF ATTENTION GRABBER. NOW THAT YOU HAVE OUR ATTENTION, JERICHO NEEDS TO RETURN. HIRE NEW WRITERS IF YOU MUST (NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE ONES YOU HAVE, BUT IF NEW IDEAS ARE NEEDED - DO WHATEVER IT TAKES, JUST BRING BACK THE SHOW - COME ON CBS - YOU MUST ADMIT THE PLOT IS DIFFERENT - AND AS SEEN - NO ONE CAN TELL WHAT THE NEXT VERSION HOLDS. KEEP IT COMING !

Nothing short of a full second season will suffice.

We, as the network's consumers, are taking a stand against network's apparent apathy against continuing good programming because it does not live up to their over-inflated expectations. We are fighting against the same incompetence that left Jericho off the air for weeks and had a horrendous impact on the overall ratings. We are fighting for a quality show that was not given a far chance.

NUTS TO CBS!

CBS is trying to make a "positive spin" to the fans and media since they cancelled the show for whatever reason. I think there is more to the story on why it was officially cancelled. Ratings? It wasn't that bad, although it was going up and more down against "American Idol" and pre-show, "Bones." Most of time it was a second-place finisher in that 8pm time slot. Pressure from certain groups? Government? Who knows?

Will we get closure as a TV-movie or mini-series? Mostly like not. Will we get the producers to read a prepare statement to say something on the upcoming CBS Paramount DVD? Most likely Yes.

Any case, I rather see a new season (13 or 22 episodes)and give the show another chance...at least out of the streamroller called "American Idol."

"Jericho" wasn't doing that bad. CBS has in the past saved some shows from cancellation, such as "Simon & Simon," "Cagney and Lacey," and of course, the NBC-debuted "JAG." Keep our fingers cross another "Firefly" miracle will happen.

I think even a novel would be nice, anything but a short paragraph saying 'This is what we planned'.

Or, it should end the same way *every* tv series should end. With Bob Newhart waking up next to Suzanne Pleshette saying he just had the most horrible dream.
