The Daily Show: May 24, 2007

by Annie Wu, posted May 25th 2007 2:18AM
Jon Stewart"Gas Pains": Senior Petroleum Expert Rob Riggle, decked out in his best Mad Max wear, talked about the absurd, record-setting gas prices. If Riggle dresses like that for all of his reports from now on, I promise I'll like him more. Promise.

"Illegally Blonde": The Alberto Gonzalez craziness briefly turned into Monica Goodling craziness. Aaand then it turned back into Gonzalez craziness. I swear, this stuff is never going to end. "Miracle virgin firing" indeed. By the way, Jesus Trump was a little too creepy for me.

The night's guest was Mr. Hollywood, Al Gore. As usual, he was talking like he's running for president. I like that he doesn't talk like a robot as often anymore. Apparently, Jon was going to do a beer hat gag, but I'm glad he didn't. Too many prop jokes, Jon! Too many. Someone should set a weekly limit to that. Maybe two per week. Yeah, that sounds good. So, Jon, if you use both of your prop gags on Monday, you're screwed for the rest of the week. And no, the prop gag number does not roll over.

Moment of Zen: Bush brought the LOLZ with "Plan BH".

"the corporate sponsored segments like the yellowbook.com one last night"

They've been doing those for years. They've never been funny.

I find myself increasingly appreciative of the Colbert Report and diminishingly of the Daily Show. TDS is too gimmicky now. Prop gags like the beer hat, the giant head of Brian Williams, the corporate sponsored segments like the yellowbook.com one last night are disappointing. I definitely prefer Colbert's bits like Threatdown and Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger. And the Word is the best 2 minutes of television each day.
Go back to your roots, Jon!
