Leno and Letterman, the younger years - VIDEOS

by Adam Finley, posted May 26th 2007 9:02AM

leno and lettermanI recently mentioned NBC.com was giving viewers a chance to create montages to celebrate Jay Leno's fifteen years on The Tonight Show.

I'll admit I took a few jabs at Leno, and in doing so prompted a couple readers to suggest checking out some of Leno's earlier, pre-Tonight Show work, specifically his appearances on Letterman before the kerfuffle in the early '90s that would see Leno getting The Tonight Show and Letterman, well, not.

Thanks to this little site called YouTube (I predict the site will become quite popular soon), I found a bunch of Leno's appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. It's both highly entertaining and somewhat bittersweet to see how the two interact with one another, knowing that in a few short years what circumstances would bring. It's like watching old Super 8 movies and remembering the good times you'll never have again.

That's what I'm talking about. Back then he actually seemed kind of hip, and wasn't condescending to the audience. And some of his jokes were smart and funny.

Although I was a little surprised by the "Wedding Singer" clothes, the Lenny and Squiggy hair, and the obsession with dirty magazines. Talk about your '80s flashback....

Leno used to be funny. Emphasis on "used."
