Here are the final 2006-07 ratings

Dancing with the Stars

Now that the May sweeps period is over, it's time to view the scorecard to see where your favorite TV show (or least favorite TV show, depending on what you're interested in seeing here) did in the overall ratings.

No surprise: American Idol has the first two spots, with the results show coming in number 1 and the performance show coming in number 2. Dancing With The Stars Season 3 has the third spot, while the same show's season 4 gets the number 5 slot. The rest of the top 10 are CSI (4), Grey's Anatomy (6), House (7), Dancing With The Stars 3 results (8), Dancing with the Stars 4 results (9), and Desperate Housewives at 10.

It's interesting to look at some of the numbers past the top 20. For example, Jericho finished ahead of many shows that have been renewed for another season, including Prison Break, Bones, Las Vegas, The Simpsons, The Office, My Name Is Earl, and Medium. Studio 60 did better than The Office, Men In Trees, American Dad, Scrubs, and Notes From The Underbelly. NCIS and Cold Case edged out Heroes, and Smith did a lot better than 30 Rock. Of course, it's not just where they stand in the ratings overall. You also have to take into account where they came into the ratings on their particular nights, industry buzz, and all those other factors we talk about here every day, but it's fun to compare, right?

There were 142 shows on the air this past season. The show at #142? The CW's Runaway.

Wow. Despite the Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls hype, America's Next Top Model continues to be the biggest show on The CW.

I just got depressed seeing the past season's list. I was looking for some of the lowest of the Big Four and saw Arrested Development with a 4.2 leading the scrap heap. How did (enough) people not watch/love this show?

Just for fun, I put the table into a spreadsheet, which is available here. For anyone who's interested, last season's ratings are here.

Not only do you have to figure in cost, but what you'd replace the show with if you cancel it. CBS can put on reruns of CSI: wherever, Without a Trace, Cold Case, Shark, etc, and get ratings as good as Jericho. NBC could cancel Las Vegas, but there is a limit to how many Deal or No Deals you can run in a week (or at least there should be... and it should be zero).

Smith was #44, which is respectible, but not great. It still upsets me such a quality show was cancelled. I'm convinced that if it were on any other network or cable, the show would have lasted much longer.

And the networks wonder why they're getting less viewers every year. With the garbage they're putting out, they're are simply better alternatives-- such as not watching anything at all.

Hereos was the only decent new show this last season.

And please, what's with all the game shows in prime time?

Folks, there's no sinister plot. Leaving out CSI was an oversight on my part, nothing I did on purpose. I added it.

"CSI" only beat "Grey's Anatomy" overall because (due to its format) it produces better re-run numbers. The total viewers numbers include ALL broadcasts of the show in its regular timeslot. I can't remember where I read the numbers including only first-time broadcasts, but "Grey's" was ahead of "CSI".

Also, InL.A., cable ratings and broadcast ratings are kept separately, and likely will be for a long time to come. Cable stations don't have the same standard for "seasons" that the broadcast networks have, don't rely nearly as much on advertising as they do subscriptions, and overall have entirely different criteria for success. So there's a reason why no cable series showed up in the BROADCAST primetime wrap-up.

What saddens me most is how much of the Top 10 and Top 20 is dominated by reality shows. Yes, I admit to watching "Survivor" (with 2 spots in the Top 20), but having only 4 scripted shows in the Top 10 and only 10 in the Top 20 is sad for the state of television (and the people who watch it).

I also find it amusing that "Lost", which was considered a huge flop ratings-wise when it returned from its hiatus, still managed to be one of those 10 scripted shows in the Top 20.

And wow, Warner Bros. and CBS Paramount really showed they were a force to be reckoned with by dissolving the WB and UPN and forming CW, which was supposed to really compete with the "big 4". :P Its highest rated show was in 112th position, and it had 14 of the bottom 17 shows on network TV.
