The Riches: It's A Wonderful Lie

Julie Ann Emery(S01E12) With just one episode to go in the season, the dominoes have started to fall. We've seen the Malloy family wriggle their way out of some tight spots. After this episode, you really have to wonder just how they are going to do it again. Some kind of a showdown with Dale was inevitable from the get go, but the new twists with Nina and Pete really add fuel to the fire.

Give the writers credit for some nice planning with Pete (Arye Gross). Cael found the emails from him early on and I had wondered if and when they were going to deal with that. Wayne's plan to just play dumb seemed a little crazy, but what other option did they really have? It did make for quite the crazy scene for the "Mont Pierres."

I really liked the quick turnaround Wayne made when Pete mentioned tracking down Jolinda. Cael's quick work of rerouting the phone call back to the cell phone for Dahlia was interesting. On the surface, just because they are able to operate as a team so well. But what really made it great was what it meant for Dahlia.

She managed to use what she knows about Jolinda to craft the story to tell Pete, and added in what she could in her best shot at just sending him away. The look on her face as she hung up the phone showed that it didn't just sit right with her. And it gets to the bigger issue that she just can't get comfortable in her new skin. While Sam and Di Di have embraced the buffer life, and are flourishing in it, it is not for Dahlia. Not yet anyway.

The fact that Pete turned out to be just a little bit off his rocker seemed to work in their favor initially. Wayne as the shrink was fun to watch. He was grasping at straws, but it looked like his encouragement to write an angry email and be done with Doug Rich was going to work. If only. That would have been too simple a solution though. I liked that Dahlia couldn't let go of the fact that she felt responsible for what was happening to Pete. It made for a really good scene at the hotel where she talked him off the ledge. At that point, I thought they had done enough and would be done with Pete for the foreseeable future. As we saw at the end of the episode though, that's not the case. Pete is on to Wayne and is going to have to be dealt with. There was a very interesting look from Aubrey as they talked in Doug's office too. She's seemed to have her suspicions throughout the series and I'll be curious to see what comes of that.

The returning Hugh cracked me up. Hugh, as everyone says, is most definitely an asshole. But he is an asshole that is great fun to watch. I especially liked how right after telling Doug that he is a changed man he started screaming at Kimmy to bring him his god damn latte... Please. His new wife, Gi Gi (Julie Ann Emery, pictured) was an unexpected surprise. Her situation, and Wayne's request for help with it, was one more thing to make Dahlia uncomfortable with her buffer life. The scene where she convinces Gi Gi to take another look at the post-nup was very good. She managed to help Wayne, but still stick it to Hugh and do what was best for Gi Gi.

Wayne's trip to court surprised me. Not that he managed to get through it, or that he won. It seems that it was a pre-determined outcome anyway. After Dahlia explained that it meant he was as big an asshole as Hugh, I really expected him to try and do something to make things right with the family, wielding some of that new found partnership power to put a new face on Panco.

I'm not sure what to make of Nina at the moment. When she showed up while Pete was visiting it made for a tense moment. Her later rationalization that they must be in the witness protection program was fun, but like Wayne's counseling session with Pete, would have been too easy. I'm glad that she put together that something else was going on, and that she called Dahlia on it. It will be interesting to see where that goes, and it also added more pressure on Dahlia. Nina has been a good friend to her, and it's getting harder and harder to just lie to everyone about every last little thing.

What can you say about Dale and Hartley? TV has some great romances. Joe and Allison on Medium or Eric and Tammy on Friday Night Lights. And then they have this. It is one of the most disturbed and crazy relationships on TV, but it is fascinating to watch. It set the stage for the reuniting of Dale with the Malloys at Hugh's reception. That wasn't how I expected it to go down, but it was still interesting. The look on Dahlia's face was perfect. It was the straw that broke the camel's back and it leaves us wondering how Wayne is going to bring her back.

The plan to wait Dale out is probably for the best, although I think they are giving Dale too much credit. I don't think he has an angle to work. He's as lost in this new world as they are and is still trying to figure out what to do. Could it be that Hartley will be the unwitting accomplice that saves the Malloy family bacon? As much as Dale wants his revenge, he's got a shot at a good thing with Hartley. Why muck it up by going after Wayne and Dahlia? How often do you run across rich, soon to be widowed, one armed, knockouts?

6 out of 7They have set the stage very well for what promises to be an explosive finale next week. Dale? Pete? Nina? Aubrey? They will all have to be dealt with at some point if the Malloys are going to hold on to their new life as the Riches. I'm looking forward to it. For now, I'll give "It's A Wonderful Lie" a 6, out of 7.

A woman might notice her friend's belongings, but a man? And for all Pete knew, if Doug was moving into a new house, he would have bought new furniture, something that someone with that kind of income would do ( I wouldn't know!). Since they also established that Pete was a little unstable, he probably wouldn't have noticed anything like that anyway. Again, a woman might have, a man, not a stretch that he didn't. I've been married to a man for 32 years - he wouldn't notice his best friend's belongings at all, nor would his friend notice ours. They leave that kind of stuff up to us!!
Just my thoughts on the subject.

Another great episode of a really great show. But one thing really bugged me during the episode, I confess: Pete said that Doug was his best friend, his golfing buddy, etc. So could it really be possible that he could walk into a house FILLED with Doug's furniture, objets d'art, etc. and not recognize a single thing? I kept on waiting for him to stop, take a look around, and say--"Wait, I know this sofa!" But nothing. That didn't sit right.

Great comments thus far. I am just amazed at everything this show gives us every week. There is no delaying with tackling the obstacles that the Malloy's would be running in to. Something happens every week that could possibly 'out' them, and destroy their Eden Falls life... it really keeps the viewer engaged and on the edge of their couch week in and week out b/c things happen every episode. This show has the perfect amount of humor to juxtapose the drama and uncomfortable situations.... brilliant.

What neighbor did Pete say he talked to when he went back? I didn't catch that and i was too lazy to rewind.

Dale and Hartley... who saw that coming? before last week that is.... Dale needs to hang around for a while, he's such a great character.

I think Aubrey has Wayne's back, or at least will... and Nina will have Dahlia's. I would hate to see Aubrey give up Wayne... b/c that would mean less, or no more Panco, and, in turn, no Hugh, and we need Hugh! Greatest a-hole on tv!

While I totally enjoy this show and haven't missed an episode, MAN DOES IT MAKE ME UNCOMFORTABLE!!!!! It was really making me nervous last night, but I wasn't surprised that Pete was the one that showed up at the office. I had thought he would do that earlier. Hopefully, he won't have to be killed, though!! But yeah, Aubrey and Nina, they could be trouble, but I have to agree that Dale has a good thing with the one armed girl, at least until she goes back to the bar in Philadelphia with Dennis and Charlie!!! She is really a fun actress to watch, isn't she? Anyway, I am anxious for the finale to see what cliff-hanger they will come up with!!

I'm thrilled at the way this episode turned out. The tension kept building all through the episode and things have clearly come to a head with Dale, Pete, Nina and probably Aubrey too, all at the same time. Next week's finale should be explosive.

I was shocked that "Grandma" didn't manage to give up the goat to Pete at the beginning, but the way he found out definitely was perfect. Overall I think that Pete is the one that they have to worry the most about... and from the looks of the trailer for next week it seems like the Riches may just agree. I really hope that they don't actually kill him. Although Wayne and Dahlia have done some seedy things to hold onto this life, they haven't done anything truly horrible. And above all, it was NOT their fault that Doug and Cherien died in the first place, because it was the other Traveller couple that drove them off the road. Not to say that what they did wasn't unethical. But still, up 'til now they have been sympathetic. I don't think they'd stay that way if they killed Pete.

The situation with Dale, however, I think will blow over. I think he's fallen in love with Hartley, and blowing Wayne and Dahlia's cover means blowing his own. He's a creep, but he's too smart to let go of a good thing. This will set up the situation for them to step carefully around each other. Could lead to interesting confrontations next year.

Also, placating Nina will be difficult but surely doable. Above all she and Dahlia really have become friends, and I think that she will remain one of their allies in the long run. As long as they don't do something to really screw it up next week.

Aubrey's the wild card. I don't really know how much she knows, and I don't know how much she would sympathize with Wayne and Dahlia either. She likes Wayne as a boss, but they aren't friends. Furthermore, she seems like an honest, ethical person. She may not be willing to participate in something with a cloud hanging over it like this. So I don't know what's going to happen there.

Anyway, next week should be exciting. I can't wait!

WOW! I can't remember the last time that something on tv surprised me like the ending of last night's episode
when it turned out to be PETE in Wayne's chair! I just assumed that it was Dale.

I agree with Brett about Dale - unless Hartley dumps him, he has no motive to do anything other than try to stay in Eden Falls just like the Malloy's are trying to do.

Did I see Wayne putting a silencer on a gun in the clips for next week's episode? Pete had said that he doesn't have family or friends and had lost his job, so no one would come looking for him. Would Wayne really kill someone to protect their existence in Eden Falls? How is this all going to play out???

As usual, they did an excellent job dancing back and forth on the line between light & dark. On the lighter side, I thought it was hilarious how the Panco employees kept referring to how much they love Hugh's weddings (but NOT his divorces)!

STILL loving this show. How great are those scenes between Dale and the one armed bandit?
I guess they will find a way to continue this life since the show has been renewed and Its called " The Riches" and not "the Molloys"

The plots of this series could have easily taken it off the deep end. However, it has turned into one of the best continuing dramas in my viewing schedule. Kudos to the writers, producers, and cast. I'm looking forward to the season finale.

Hopefully this very entertaining show will be renewed for next season.
