TV watchdog in Poland lets up on Tinky Winky

by Adam Finley, posted May 30th 2007 8:14AM

tinky winkyRecently, Paul mentioned that the ombudsman for children's television in Poland had come out against the Teletubbies, and Tinky Winky specifically, for promoting homosexuality.

To be fair, the comment about Teletubbies promoting homosexuality was brought up by journalists during a magazine interview, and ombudsman Ewa Sowinska replied by saying that, due to the "purse" carried by Tinky Winky, she would investigate these claims. I say "to be fair" not to defend Sowinska exactly, but just to point out that she was responding to claims made by others. Still, that doesn't quite explain how holding a "purse," or "money bag," or whatever the hell that thing is, equals being gay. I think someone needs to go back to Gay School and learn a lot more about that specific sexual orientation.

At any rate, Sowinska has backed away from her previous comments. Speaking through her spokesperson, Lipinska Wieslawa, she said, "they are fictional characters, they have nothing to do with reality, and the bag and scissors and other props the fictional characters use are there to create a fictional world that speaks to children."

When asked to comment, Tinky Winky exclaimed, "apples!" and slid down a hill.

I'm from Poland and from now on, after this bullshit going out I'm ashame of my country! we have quasi-democracy now and president of our country is some gay-buster... just like big part of our government. it's sad.

I'd like 2 let you know that in this country ARE still NORMAL PEOPLE and I don't want to foreign people thinks "OMG, Poland. it's a country when human can't be gay but Teletubbies could be". now I read an article. our television censored "Little Britain" because of gay-gag in one of episodes... it's sick. :-////

please, just don't forget: Sowinska and our government didn't supposed to be representative of whole country. most of inteligency of Poland it's not "30 years behind other countries" as I read in some websites...

I'm just feelin' sorry that I must live in Poland. there's nothing here for me and all of young inteligent people, for gays...

I saw Tinky-Winky at the gym the other day, and he was totally checking me out. And the TV in his tummy? It was showing "Will & Grace."

Case Closed.

I didnt even know the Teletubbies had a gender - but of they really do - and if the purple one is supposed to be male - then one can wonder why it is a purse and not a backpack. Maybe Sowinska was correct and the purple one was so cleverly devised as not to be able to definitly prove anything - who knows.
