Battlestar movie hinges on original creator

by Anna Johns, posted Jun 11th 2007 11:27AM
bsg; battlestar galacticaAccording to the film site, IESB, the cast and crew of Battlestar Galactica would really like to do a movie. Only, it's not up to them. It's not even up to NBC/Universal. The permission for doing a movie must first come from the original series creator, Glen Larson. He's the guy who created the series in the 1970s.

IESB says Larson hasn't been thrilled with the current adaptation of Battlestar Galactica, so getting his permission to make a movie might be really, really difficult. Apparently he has already made things slightly difficult for the current run of BSG. Since he holds the movie rights to the series, SciFi's plan to create a stand-alone movie about the Pegasus had to be altered a bit. Instead of going straight to DVD, the two-episode feature will have to air on television first.

In interviews with the website, BSG producer David Eick mentions that he has "extended an olive branch" to Larson and actor Jamie Bamber flat-out begs Larson to let them do a big screen flick.

Would you like a BSG movie? I surely would. I know I'll miss these characters terribly once the series is over.

I just read the RDM blog. My response to RDM is please do not get any ideas about ending BSG in the Soprano fashion. Those of us who have "suffered" along with the rag tag fleet want this series to have a red ribbon ending. Although RDM owes us nothing it would be nice if he did not trash the ending just to be thought provoking.

For those who remember the original, as well as the years of cool programming that Glen A Larson made available, I have to say that I respect the man's decision.

The new one is good, don't get me wrong, but it's nothing like the original series.

And after the disappointing Firefly movie, I'm not so sure I'm looking forward to another great Sci-Fi series making the leap to the big screen.

Here's a thought... how about making an original sci-fi movie?

Dear Mr. Larsen, as a kid I loved the original BSG and as an adult I dearly love the updated BSG. Please sign off on the movie, it is in your power to make so many people happy. Many thanks in advance!

ok, you guys want some more ambiguity about the end of Galactica... go read RDM's blog today about the end of the Sopranos. Reading between the lines can lead to some interesting conclusions:

Dorv, You know I totally almost did bring up a few points to counter Jimmy's mentioning of Serenity but I figured you guys have seen me bitch about that enough ;)

However that does lead me to one point. Why is it that so many people feel that shows need to jump to a different medium to continue? And especially the TV to Cinema jump? Why can't an effective story be told in one medium and stick to it?

Bradley: Apparently someone else can't read the OP either,

"In interviews with the website, BSG producer David Eick mentions that he has "extended an olive branch" to Larson and actor Jamie Bamber flat-out begs Larson to let them do a big screen flick."

This post is specifically talking about a feature movie possiblity, while discussing the Pegasus project.

Just sayin'...

Chris: I agree with you in that BSG probably today has more mainstream buzz than Firefly did. However, still probably not enough to justify a movie.

Jimmy: Thanks for being the first to bring up Firefly, opening the door for Akbar to level that movie (once again).

David: I think its more the fans and the media tha continue to bring up movie possiblities than it is the cast/crew trying to generate buzz.

Akbar: I'm with you... I think RDM and Eick want to end the show on a final note, but they continue to get hounded about a movie. If they haven't gotten the deal (for a movie) done by the end of the run, then by god give us a satisfying ending.

Oh yeah, and Larson is a doucebag. For what its worth. I can see taking the paychecks, but can you tell me in what way he doesn't like the direction of the show? Yeah, Adam West's Batman has its place in pop culture history, but Christian Bale's is so much more relevant in today's climate.

Bradley, you apparently didn't read all of the the article that was linked to. Yes, the proof of this rights issue with Larson is apparent because of the upcoming DVD release but the article speculates on a future cinematic film as well.

A movie after the series has ended with the Galectica reaching Earth? Hmmm...

I thinking an "Alien Nation" remake with Cylon's instead of the aliens from that Movie/TV series. Eh, they could probably pull it off.

Apparently the people who visit this site don't read the original post or the previous post that it was linked to. The movie that is being referred to is the Pegasus movie. The original plan was release the movie to DVD in the Fall of 2007. However, due to rights the "movie" will air on Sci-Fi first before heading to DVD (making it part of the television series versus being a standalone movie). Additionally, people who actually watch the show realize that the Pegasus was destroyed in episode 3.04, thus the plot line would ultimately have to be a flashback regardless of whether it airs this Fall or after the series is over. The two hour episode airs in November: http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=2&id=41709

You know, instead of a movie, why not negotiate with digital theaters in large markets to show the entire series on a weekly basis, like the old days of the cinema? You don't need another product. I would pay money to go see the entire run on the big screen, and it would be a ton of fun.
