The Daily Show: June 11, 2007

Jon StewartJon briefly touched upon the Paris Hilton situation by poking some fun at the media's extensive coverage. CNN complained a lot about covering it, but then proceeded to do it for the rest of the day. Oh, Anderson Cooper, you're better than this.

"Albaniacs": President Bush paid a visit to Albania, where he was received like a rock star. Oh, man... Jon had to call Dennis Miller for joke help? Weak. So weak. The Daily Show has been doing a lot of name-dropping lately, in the form of these silly little phone calls and those Giant Head appearances. I'm not sure I like it very much.

"Benny and the Guest": Senior Papist Jason Jones, sporting some wicked crucifix bling, talked about the president's first meeting with the Pope. I actually laughed once or twice during this bit, so, nice work, Jones.

Resident Expert John Hodgman talked about the popularity of mixed martial arts. His response to Jon's question about the octagonal shape was hysterical... Almost as hysterical as the homoerotic montage. Ohh, filth. That cut towards the end of the segment was incredibly awkward. Either Jon started cracking up or John got carried away with his fake fighting. By the way, I would love to see a Jon vs. John throw-down. There'd probably be a lot of crying involved.

The night's guest was David Steinberg, author of The Book of David. I thought this interview went well because, unlike most comedians, Steinberg didn't completely overwhelm the conversation. Instead, he was funny and charming, and it made for a pleasant story time.

Jon/Stephen: Stephen Colbert shared how he thought The Sopranos should have ended... Crazy mobster shoot-out, Tony gets shot in the Adam's apple, screen goes wobbly, Tony wakes up, reveal the whole series was a dream, his wife turns out to be Carrie Bradshaw, The Sopranos was really a Sex and the City spin-off. Perfect! One problem though: Carrie would never go for Tony. Sorry. Moment of Zen: CNN don't know how work TelePrompter.

Oh, the things I learn from this show. I had now idea that David Steinberg had such an illustrius history. I just knew him from his show.

And the UFC segment was hilarious. But the editing cuts were very distracting.

Jon was a guest on Steinberg's "Sit Down Comedy" show, and they clearly had a very comfortable, easy rapport. It's not surprising that that continued on Jon's turf.
