Kyle XY: The Prophet (season premiere)

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Jun 15th 2007 10:51PM
Kyle XY(S02E01) When TV Squad asked us to list what we would watch over the summer, I struggled to find something else than reality TV as I don't get all the nifty cable channels. After seeing that ABC would air most, if not all, episodes of Kyle XY, I decided to give the show a shot as I heard only good things about it.

In order to prepare myself for the Season 2 premiere, I bought the Season 1 DVD and had a little XY marathon. Of course, I got hooked and couldn't wait for the premiere to get answers, especially when, in one of the DVD extras, the people behind the show promised me tons of answers early in the season.

The people behind the show didn't lie to me.

According to BuddyTV, 2.2 million viewers sat in front of their TV to watch the answers-packed Season 2 premiere.

The answers

Adam explained a lot of things to Kyle but most of it we pretty much knew or speculated. We knew Kyle was the result of an experiment and that he didn't have a belly button because he didn't have a real mother, so no umbilical cord. We expected that Adam was involved in Kyle's creation. The man confirmed that he created Kyle to have children with great brain capabilities help the world and later added that he also made Kyle so someone could share his abilities and also to not be alone in life anymore. Adam tells Kyle that he has many powers to develop; he tries to have Kyle move the water inside a glass using his brain. After Adam falls down a few times, he tells Kyle that having great brain capabilities also means that the body can't keep up. "Latnok," the prophet in English, is the name of the group of visionaries who created Kyle in order to do good. Finally, we learn that Zzyzx wants Kyle dead because some people in the company decided they needed the "projects" for something else than what Latnok had planned

Foss is on a mission

Tom Foss survived the Season 1 finale shooting. He is still in charge of security and is highly cautious so that Zzyzx doesn't track Kyle down and terminate him once and for all. When Kyle questions Tom about why he didn't try to get him out of the "womb" as soon as he saw him, Foss simply answers that he was doing his job. But we clearly see that Tom cares a lot about Kyle and has been for a while.

After Adam's killing, Foss and Adam's friend Brian talk about Kyle's future. Foss decides that he must destroy Zzyzx so that Kyle can live without the fear of being hunt down. Kyle doesn't want any casualties and orders Foss to not go ahead with his destructive plan. But Foss is on a mission. He goes to Zzyzx and plants a bomb. While there, he finds XX and Kyle, who is lurking around. He gets Kyle out of the compound in time to not blow up in the explosion. Back at Adam's mansion, Foss and Kyle discuss the future.

Tom wants to help young Kyle develop his abilities and continue Adam's work. Kyle decides that to fully discover the world and develop, he must go back to the Tragers', where he'll have a normal life. Both men make a pact to continue to work together while Kyle keeps his past from the Tragers' so to protect them.

Nicole is imploding

Things have changed in the Tragers' household since Kyle left with his fake parents. Nicole quit her job, somewhat stopped caring for her family, is seeing a therapist and only thinks about Kyle. Stephen had to step up. The kids are still the same as usual, especially Josh. Their only means of communication with Kyle is random webcam chats that are cut short since Zzyzx could track the feed down.

Declan is rather distant with Lori; he seems to have a lot on his mind (Kyle?). I don't think this couple will last long. Maybe they'll get back together eventually but I think they need to split for a while so Declan can get things in order. After seeing that he didn't get grounded for throwing a party in the house and serving beer to under-aged teens, Josh tries to shake his mother up by telling her she clearly doesn't care about him anymore since he didn't get any punishment. Nicole finally decides to accept that Kyle left. She goes back to her old self and decides to cook supper. As dinner is being serve, Kyle shows up on the Tragers' doorstep. The family embraces him immediately but will they all be able to go back to life as it was before Kyle left?

XX

XX, the female version of Kyle, escapes the explosion. She was said to be the "successful project" while Kyle was a "failure." Does that mean she'll learn faster than Kyle? Will she be Kyle's opposite, be the bad seed? For sure, her addition to the regular cast will bring a new dimension to the show and brings many questions.

Finally a show that is not afraid to give answers! "The Prophet" was a great episode as it not only answered tons of questions but also set tone for the new season.

Fans rejoice, Kyle XY will have 23 episodes that will air in two parts: 13 episodes this summer and 10 episodes in Winter 2008. Fear not, if ABC decides not to air all season 2 episodes, I'll find another mean to watch the episodes and bring you weekly reviews.

Season one was one of the better shows of 2006 that no one I know saw (but me). In an age of "Lost", it's nice to see a show provides answers to questions in an up front manner, returning the focus to the characters and moving on to a new plot line. Now if only the writers would give Matt Dallas a few opportunities to, you know, act. Staring without blinking and saying his lines monosyllabically gets a bit old after a dozen or so episodes.

I wonder if this is how John Doe was created...since we never learned on that show...anyone know if there is any crossover in writers or producers from John Doe.

Hey Mel! Glad I could crack you up. I was looking for a short title that would sum up the Tragers and Nicole's behavior was the focus of the episode so I tried to find a title to go with her. "Nicole is imploding" was created!

"Um, dude? You've got a piece of Nicole on you" - Nice little LOST reference there ;)

This is one of my favorite shows, and a highlight of my summer-- thanks for covering it!

One of my favorite things about Kyle XY is the mythology and how well it's handled. The Prophet gave us a lot of answers about Kyle and his origins, while setting up new elements with XX, and they didn't do too much. They left some questions left to be answered, but not too many. We're satisfied, but we have a reason to come back for more. I for one would love to know more about Tom Foss. I can't wait to see how the rest of the episodes go.

And for some reason "Nicole is imploding" really cracked me up. "Um, dude? You've got a piece of Nicole on you."

The show is originally on ABC family and airs on monday night. It was just so successful that they also air it on ABC on friday. So the good news is they will air the whole season because it is ABC family most successful show ever. This was said by the had of ABC family who gave the go ahead after seeing season 2 for season 3 before it even aired.

Mike: The reason why Kyle is lifting is shirt is because he doesn't have a belly-button. It is an important part of Season 1.
