Cookie Monster eats a machine - VIDEO

by Adam Finley, posted Jun 16th 2007 9:03AM

cookie monsterMuppet fans know that some characters evolve while others just spring up from out of nowhere. Cookie Monster, for example, began life as somewhat more ferocious-looking monster (the row of sharp teeth helped) in several commercials before being toned down and brought to Sesame Street.

In the clip below, a pre-Sesame Street Cookie Monster devours a machine while the machine describes how it works and what its many functions are. Actually, it only has one main function, but you'll have to watch the clip for that.

Now, this clearly isn't from Sesame Street, though it's perfectly safe for kids to watch. According to Wikipedia, it began as part of a training film for IBM, and the monster was originally known as the "Wheel Stealer," a character used in a General Mills breakfast commercial that never aired. The sketch later turned up on The Ed Sullivan Show, which is presumably where this clip comes from.

Like any Muppet fan, I miss Jim Henson, but when I see anything with Henson and Frank Oz, I miss him even more. Those two men played off one another perfectly, and once something that magical and inexplicable is severed, its impossible to ever recapture it. Thank god for video uploads of dubious legality, that's all I'm saying.
