Sam Micelli lives on in Alyssa Milano's Dodgers blog

Alyssa MilanoIn response to Bob's post about celebrity blogs, one of our readers, Galley, suggested we check out Alyssa Milano's blog on MLB.com. So, being a fan of baseball and an, uh, "admirer" of Milano, I decided to go over and check it out.

Essentially a promotional vehicle for her line of women's baseball wear, the blog shows that Milano -- a Dodgers season ticket holder -- really does know her stuff. She quotes venerable Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, and speaks about her team with the same passion and attention to detail as Sal from Brooklyn or any of the Joe Six-Packs that call into sports radio shows across the country.

For instance, in yesterday's entry, she bemoans the Dodgers' losing streak and questions a substitution manager Grady Little made in Sunday night's game: "Double switch??? There is no reason to play James Loney in right field, out of position, when we were losing by a ton in the eighth. It's like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic."

How many Hollywood starlets not only know what a double switch is, but is able to effectively complain about how its use put a first baseman with only 15 at-bats this year out of position (Loney hurt his knee when he crashed into the outfield wall while while tracking down a fly ball)? On the surface, Milano's baseball fandom seems to be surprising.

Who's the Boss? Then again, people forget that before Milano grew up into the hottie that she is now, that she was the definition of a tomboy. During those first few years of playing Sam Micelli on Who's The Boss?, Milano was often seen tossing a baseball around with her dad Tony, participating in sports, and being an overall tough little girl (look at the cast picture to the left, which I'd imagine is from the show's first or second year. Boy, Alyssa has changed, hasn't she?). So it's not a big stretch to think that Milano was a tomboy and a baseball fan in real life, as well.

Either way, seeing her ruminations on the Dodgers is quite refreshing. At least whoever her lucky boyfriend is (apparently, she likes dating baseball players as much as watching them play) doesn't have to be worried that she'll be bored at the game. She'll probably be into it more than he will.

Is it so strange to see a girl with brains, not all are bimbos with blond hair.
