Isaiah Washington says he's powerful, great, and that he loves himself

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 20th 2007 2:21PM

Isaiah WashingtonThere probably comes a time in every controversy where the person involved should just...stop...talking.

Fired Grey's Anatomy star Isaiah Washington is now comparing himself to Malcolm X and Paul Robeson. He isn't happy about getting canned from the show after he apologized, went to "rehab" and did everything the network asked him to do, and now he wonders if it's because of who he is and not what he did.

"Maybe for 50 years and the history of media and television I represent something that's supposed to not exist...This happened to Malcolm X, this happened to Paul Robeson -- this misconception can happen to any man of power that loves himself and wants to spread that love and that humanity throughout the world."

It's probably not a good idea to talk about yourself in that type of historical context. I mean, the guy was let go for saying homophobic remarks and acting like a jerk on the set in general. I'm trying to think, what TV show was Malcolm X on again?

I think the media has made too big a deal out this, as usual. But to those who think he was fired because he's black - that's such a lame cop-out. He was black when they hired him. And, taking his bizarre behaviour and quotes since then as a glimpse into his personality, I can only imagine what he was like to work with on the set (don't forget, he had picked a fight with Patrick Dempsey just prior to making the infamous comment). I'm sure if anyone had called him the "N" word on the set, the same pandemonium would have errupted. Look what happened to Michael Richards.

This guy is friggin CRAZY!!!

He'll never work again - at least not on television. Would you want to hire him?

Jason Elias, you said: Regardless of the "incident" I do think his dismissal was a mistake and isn't going to help GA in the least. At least Burke was written as a mature human being. The rest of the show could is becoming increasingly puerile.

I completely agree with you on this. And personally, I think Izzie is by far the most annoying character.

You all make me laugh. Isaiah is a great actor and was only fired because he is black. He used that infamous word in an argument with one castmate. Who hasn't used that word. It just so happens when you use it, the media isn't watching your every move. Grow up, America is still the same racist country it has always been and that is the bottom line here. I watched the show for the 3 seasons it has been on but I am not watching it anymore because Burke was my favorite character. I hope he takes abc to court like he is threatening and wins big. I'm sure at least one person on the show has called him the 'N' word and you don't see them getting fired. TR just likes to whine about this so he can get more money out of the show. The homosexual community at large wasn't even upset with Washington after he apologized. It is called forgive and forget people, so get a life.

"I'm trying to think, what TV show was Malcolm X on again?"

Ask Paris Hilton; she'll probably say he was one of the X-Men from the FOX Network cartoon a few years ago.

"Um, yeah...wasn't he the guy with the sharpy knife-thingies that came out of his hands? Ewwww...like, what if he had to go to the bathroom? That would HURT!"

This has been a Hilton-Haranguing Humor Hop.

Thank you.

Wow. Just wow. Talk about having a martyr complex. Comparing himself to what MLK went through because he was fired from a television show. He is pretty much insuring that his future acting career will be limited to the Saturday evening Sci Fi channel movie.

If this man is prejudice, he is entitled to his own feelings, but he should keep that to himself. Learning self-control, when to speak and when to remain silent is paramount to being in the public eye. Most in our society have never learned tact and restraint, don't know how to hold their tongues. Its no wonder people let whatever they feel at the moment just dribble from their lips. Do I think Washington should have gotten fired after he did everything ABC required he do to make amends for his thoughtless and hurtful remarks? No, I really don't. That, in and of itself, is intolerence. Do I think now is the time for him to show some restraint and move on with his career? Absolutely.
