Watchdog upset over Jack Daniel's sponsorship of Mad Men

by Adam Finley, posted Jun 21st 2007 6:23PM

mad menI agree with Bob, Mad Men, a new series coming to AMC, looks quite interesting. It focuses on people working in the ad industry in the '60s, back when smoking and drinking didn't have the stigma it does now. Did you know even babies smoked in 1965? Well, they did, and they loved it.

Unfortunately, the '60s vibe of Mad Men seems to be clashing with new attitudes toward alcohol sponsorship on commercial TV. Commercial Alert has filed a complaint with the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, claiming that Jack Daniel's sponsorship of the series violates the marketing code that alcohol consumption can not be shown in association with irresponsible behavior and lewd sexual situations, even though that's essentially the whole point of consuming alcohol in the real world.

I wrote that last sentence as a joke, but still, Mad Men is clearly going for a gritty, realistic vibe, and ample consumption of Jack Daniel's probably fits right in.

I think AMC has gone above & beyond with the advertising of madmen. We were CONSTANTLY bombarded and interrupted. This is a "SUCK" show that was FORCED onto the viewer, why? Probably the obsession for AMC's God, (money). Send a message; DO NOT INVADE MY SPACE OR TIME! Tell these parasites to ASK us first!

I think the time frame of this show is a little more specific than "the 60's". I believe it is 1960. Looking at pictures of my father and other family members of the late 50's and very early 60's, the show looks accurate.

Uh. I was a little advertising starlet back in the sixties, in New York. At Doyle, Dane, Bernbach. Uh. Nobody dressed like the guys I see in these photos. Not even the 'suits' wore the kinds of suits these 'MadMen' are wearing. Uh. These guys look more like bankers, or accountants or secret service agents.
Mad Ave circa the sixties just did not, no way look like this. They were very wild and crazy times and HUGELY creative. London was major flashpoint for fashion. Skirts were up the whazoo, shirts were striped, ties were wide and hair was loooooooong. Hhhhhhmmm.
This is really weird. Cos it was my time, my world, my tribe (or in tongue of today, myspace) and uh, I don't recognize it. I, uh, guess you had to be there.

But.. doesn't this happen a lot on tv? Or am I missing something.

For example. Ross and Rachel got drunk and acted all sillylike and got married. Rather a tame example, but "irresponsible behavior" regardless.

"Hellloooo Mr Rachel!"
