Entourage: The First Cut is the Deepest

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Jun 24th 2007 11:57PM

Billy, Vince, and Eric

(S04E02) "They had an after-party at the hotel. Anthony Michael Hall pissed off the balcony and we got thrown out." - Eric

This show continues to impress me. After last week's stellar "documentary" episode, we returned to the regular format but still maintained this ridiculously entertaining blend of humor and drama that the show has achieved. It was good to begin with and now it's even better. Stories are layered, characters are becoming far more developed, and there's still plenty of room for Turtle to get sorority girls to whip out their boobs. We're only two episodes into the fourth season, but if this keeps up, it's gonna be the best one yet. Much like Vinnie Chase's career, Entourage appears to be hitting its stride.

Of course, whether or not you think his career is going in the right direction depends on who you ask. Vinnie? Yes. Eric? No. They finally saw the first cut of Medellín and Vince loved it. Eric thought it sucked. They both told Billy it was a masterpiece. Regarding Walsh, I'm tending to agree with the assessment many have had. His whole "I'm damaged and crazy" routine is starting to wear a little thin. But he's still hilarious. I probably could have done without his motorcycle getaway though.

Back to Vince and E. They're co-producers and they're on different pages. This can't be good. Eric is already on thin emotional ice since he apparently went on a break with Sloane. I personally doubt they'll ever get back together. Whatever, back to the movie. They don't agree and this was their dream project. Seems like we have the basis for this season's conflict. Plus, the second Eric gets fed up with Vince, he can just feed into Billy's insecurities and tell him how he truly feels. Boom. Movie locked up. This isn't even touching on Vince's money issues. See what I mean though? These two are not going to get along.

On to Ari. Love what's going on there too. Delving into his family life more is a great step forward. We got a taste of that last season when Vince was still signed with Amanda and I'm glad they're continuing to look into it now. I knew there was a good reason for Perrey Reeves getting bumped to the credited cast. This whole situation might be a bit of a reality check for Ari though. People find him annoying and rude. No surprise there but how's he going to adjust to hearing that?

Other random thoughts...
  • What happened to Turtle's girlfriend from the end of last season? Is that just getting dropped? The only reason I really care is because I wanted to see if she'd keep prying and find out his real name.
  • Loved the cameo from Dan Castelleneta. Loved the cameo from Anthony Michael Hall even more.
  • The Gigli effect. Priceless.
  • I love how Billy's mom is his barometer for a film's quality.
So once again... we wait. I was hoping we'd get to see a finished clip or two from Medellín and instead we had to settle for Drama protecting his condo from drunk phantom urinaters. Gotta love it though, especially for what it sets up. We already had a falling out with Ari and that got fixed. But what happens when Vince and E get into it?

Five reasons Entourage is a great show

1.) Money and careers are at stake. Let me repeat that again for you, money and careers are at stake. Problems aren't resolved in an episode or two because problems aren't resolved that way in real life. In this show problems get worse because these people constantly screw everyone over and then they have to suck it up and work with each other again. There is bad blood and rivalries. Hence the show is much more interesting because those relationships are allowed to develop.

2.) The main characters ARE only interested in themselves. Relationships and family take a backseat. This is LA and these guys aren't going to get bogged down with the responsibility of being in a relationship because they don't need to in order get laid. For them, it's easy.

3.) Female characters do matter. Ari's wife is pretty much dead on portrayal of what a succesful man's wife acts like (at least where I'm from). The other guys don't want that yet. Wives are a lot of work. Not everyone wants one and she is a huge reminder of what being married is all about.

4.) It is satire, it is guy humor. If you don't get it then keep watching Will and Grace. Please don't bag on this show though. It is great and it doesn't pander.

5.) Guys worse than E get very desirable women in cities where it is expensive to live, if they have money or pull. If you don't like it then call out the WOMEN who are with guys like E. Can't blame E for taking what he can get.

Entourage is the greatest show on right now. Period.

I thought this review of the episode was too uncritical. The show has a lot of weaknesses. I hereby submit:

Five Reasons That Entourage Will Never Be a Great Show

1) Nothing is at stake. The show is basically a drawn out, multi-season male fantasy in which no problem really ever comes to a head that is not immediately resolved within an episode or two.

2) Main characters remain two-dimensional jerks after several seasons. They go nowhere. We learn nothing new about any of them. Eric does not seem to be any closer to developing talent at his improbable career path, Vince is still affable and shallow and dull, and Turtle and Drama are still caricatures.

3) No female characters that matter. Women are routinely and absurdly insulted on the show, and remain ghettoized in bit-part slut roles with no sense of comedy or irony about it, which ultimately dehumanizes the whole premise.

4) The show is not satire, which one might have hoped when first checking out the series. It is a sincere expression of an adolescent male fantasy with only very gentle, forgiving attempts at humor at the character's expense. There is no acknowledgement that the four characters at the center are basically dill-holes.

5) There is no way that E would get hot women. Full stop.

Does anyone know who sang the song at the end of the episode?

Hah, I thought Billy was very Vincent Gallo-esque too, but I'm a huge fan of Vincent Gallo, regardless of his attitude. It makes me laugh how much Billy is a mess.

I guess I'm the only one that likes Ari?

I mean it's hysterical when they left him, and when hes with them. Anyway you take him Piven keeps Ari gold in my book.

Walsh's character is a bit annoying, although I did love the motorcycle getaway, I'm pretty sure that mimics something elsewhere.

I go back and forth with E's character.

but please, no more Drama. His act is by far the most annoying.
He could stand to sit out for a season.

I am going to have to disagree with everyone on Walsh. I think we've mainly seen one side of his personality and in the last two episodes we've caught glimpses of a vulnerable creative mind that is seeking acceptance from the world around him. It's a trust issue with Walsh and really up until the last two episodes, he hasn't trusted anyone but Vince and even that relationship was on thin ground. I think we're going to see a lot more colaboration between Walsh and E, as he seems to be the only one who can push Walsh into a corner.

I was irritated with Billy from day one and aside from that moment of vulnerability in last week's season premier when he needed the reassurance from E I'd hated every second of him on screen.

And Melissa I had also assumed he was based of
Vincent Gallo, because he looks just like him and acts just the way I heard Gallo acts. (ie insane.) I mean Gallo seems like that type of guy that would call someone a "suit."

Like some of the others mentioned, I've had enough Billy. It's always the same with him. And while I liked seeing more of Mrs. Ari, the whole school sideplot seemed pretty random and pointless.

I'm hoping they get done with Billy really soon, and that Ari plays more of an agent role...he's spent too many episodes on the sidelines or involved in tangential plots.
