The Dead Zone: Ego

Johnny and new Sheriff(S06E02) Well, it would seem that the folks who predicted last week that the apocalyptic storyline featuring Greg Stillson was over are right. At least for now. The tagline for this season is "The Season That Changes Everything." I think they are telling us loud and clear that we are headed in a new direction. I think this might be a good thing. After all, Johnny stopping Stillson ends the movie and the book. The TV show has made many departures from the book and movie, so why not take that further? I was very frustrated last season because I thought the show had really lost that focus and was now disparate, unconnected episodes in which Johnny did nothing more than solve cases. But if the show changes its focus to having that happen, then fine.

There's a new sheriff in town. And boy does she not like Johnny. Should we have bets on how long it is before they end up in the sack? Or do you think Nina's coming back to be his new love interest? Or will he and Sarah get together now that she and Johnny and Baby are moving in with Johnny? I have to admit that I didn't see that one coming. I thought Sarah was going to give him the brush-off. But I am glad she didn't. After all, even though Walt was raising J.J. as his son, Johnny is still J.J.'s biological father, so he does have a certain responsibility to help raise him.

How heartbreakingly sweet is J.J.? I know that some commenters last week said they didn't like the new actor, but I find him adorable. The kid is genuinely a good actor. I hope we start to see him in a larger role this season, and that his bond with Johnny develops. But I wouldn't be surprised if he lashes out at Johnny for living when Walt is dead. I hope they realistically pursue the family's grief about Walt throughout the season. The loss of a parent/spouse is a horrible, irretrievable blow to a family and it shouldn't be dismissed lightly.

It bothers me a little bit that I know we are not supposed to like the new sheriff. She doesn't believe in Johnny's visions, which puts him back at square one with law enforcement. She was rude to Sarah, took Walt's computer, appears to be investigating Walt's bank records, and is just prickly. I don't like being manipulated into not liking her, though, so I am determined to like her anyway. I think we will find out that she is a good person.

If you go to this website, USA Network allows you to peek into Walt's computer so you can get clues into what he was investigating. I haven't had a chance to do this yet, but I may poke around a bit later. I think people who speculated last week in the comments last week that Johnny is Purdy's son are probably right. However, Walt's secret could be anything, really. It could be about Stillson, for all we know. I like that focus of the show too: Discovering what Walt's secret is. I think we will have clues throughout the season as to what it is. This could even be fun.

What do you think Walt's secret is?

Well, from previews, it looks like Stillson is back next week, so he hasn't been written out. But he's just a guest star anyway, so he wouldn't have to live in Montreal. Same with Purdy.

I thought this episode was...okay-ish. It still felt like we were wrapping up loose ends and rebooting the show. We've got Sarah and JJ living with Johnny. We've got the new sheriff, we've got the 'investigating Walt' storyline in motion. We're at square one for setting up a whole new set of storylines.

The one thing that drove me nuts, and is now at the point of ridiculousness, is the possibility that ANYone in Cleaves Mills would be unaware of who Johnny Smith is, and what he can do, and the amazing things he has done (and people he's saved, publicly). Nina (the psychiatrist) has supposedly been in town for five years, and she doesn't know who Johnny is?

I just want this show to get past the point of having to go through the whole "So... you think you're a psychic..oKAYYYY..." spiel each time. It would be like every person Superman came across thinking he's crazy for thinking he can fly and that he has super-strength.

While the new JJ actor was really obvious, and a too different from the original actor, I'm glad they made the change. The old actor had zero personality or acting ability. The new actor is ten times better and actually capable of being a major character on the show.

I am okay with a new direction for The Dead Zone too. Last season was unwatchable for me too.

I didn't get that they were trying to make her unlikeable. Perhaps as a girl, your "bitch radar" is more finely tuned than mine; I just saw her as skeptical, someone Johnny will have to prove himself to. I too thought she'd become his new love interest until the lame "move in with me" scene...if they write a slow "falling back in love" progressive storyline into this season I'm going to throw up.

I wasn't aware that filming had moved from Vancouver to Montreal until reading the comments last week, but that may help explain the cast changes. It might be that some of the actors didn't want to move, and their characters were written out of the show (Walt, Bruce) or the actor replaced(JJ). I'm still going under the assumption that Stillson and maybe Purdy were written off as well, due to the way their continuing story lines were concluded last week. Both were only occasionally recurring characters anyway, so I'm holding out hope that one or both will return later this season, although I won't be holding my breath. I'm still bitter about the changes, though (like you couldn't tell!)
