The Daily Show: June 26, 2007

Bruce Willis"You Don't Know Dick": Time for a Dick Cheney fun fact... Apparently the Vice President has several man-sized safes in his office for everyday business stuff. I believe the word for that is "weird".

"Decisions '07": I quite enjoyed the spinny quality of this segment, even though Jon didn't quite master it. However, I was mildly disappointed in the audience for not laughing more at "Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more." Every mention of a Monty Python line deserves nothing less than riotous laughter. It is the law. But, of course, the audience was in stitches over the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner. Ohh, Daily Show demographics!

Senior Political Analyst Samantha Bee shared another fun fact about Cheney! He's also part of the Supreme Court. He's everywhere, I guess.

"Trendspotting with Demetri Martin": Wow, Trendspotter Demetri Martin wears the strangest ties ever and yet, somehow, it's totally okay because he's Demetri Martin. In this edition, Martin addressed the new college graduates in the world and the marvels of Visa PayWave. Whenever I think of the PayWave cards, I worry that being able to pay with such speed means that someone who steals my credit card will be able to buy more crap, more quickly.

The night's guest was Bruce Willis, star of Live Free or Die Hard. For some reason, watching the trailers for this movie makes me kind of feel like Bruce Willis is going through the ultimate mid-life crisis. Is this how big celebrity guys go through that time? Making big budget action flicks? Anyway, this interview started off with way too many "inside" jokes. I've only slept through bus rides through South Jersey, so I had no idea what was going on. Bruce Willis looked very shiny though. The light reflecting from his bald dome combined with the metallic look of his suit completely blinded me.

Jon/Stephen: Moviefone joke. Does anyone still use Moviefone? Like, really, with a phone? Moment of Zen: The Guinea Pig Festival looked hellish.

I think part of the joke on a man-sized safe is that, while in a Get Smart-type environment one might need oodles of classified docs on hand, the VP has traditionally not. Does the Oval Office have man-sized safes? Don't think so, though I could be wrong. Man-sized safes are great, where they're necessary and expected. The VP's office? Creepy.

When I had access to classified, I had to work in a large windowless building behind a variety of Get Smart-type access-control barriers, and still we had to use large safes. One may imagine the Vice President has access to, and need to keep close to hand, a larger-than-average quantity of classified material for the business of America. It's not weird at all that his office would have "man-sized" safes. Who knows, though. Did they say he keeps a man in that safe?

Having a safe? Understandable. Using man-sized safes for everyday business? Raises questions.

I realize that Dick Cheney is the Devil Incarnate and therefore every trait of the man must be reported as having dark import, or as menacingly bizarre -- but have any of you ever heard of classified information? It's kept under lock and key in a... safe! Could it be that the Vice President has access to classified information, and chooses not to leave it in his desk drawer?

As a Bergen County girl from the ages of 10 to 18, I had to say I loved the Jersey talk, too (and I *hated* living in Jersey). I guess I just love being in on the joke.

Demetri Martin was AWESOME, by the way.

Knowing what Willis and Stewart was talking about does require some king of residence in NJ. It was fun because its true. One part of Jersey is polluted (north), one has nuclear plants and cows (south), and one part is overdeveloped (shore, where I live).

I thought the Jersey conversation was fun. I keep forgetting that both Stewart and Willis hail from the Garden State (Willis went to Montclair State College -- now University -- from what I can remember) But, I'm a NJ lifer, so I can relate, even though I'm from the far-superior northern part of the state ;).
