Kyle XY: The List Is Life
(S02E03) Are you on the list? In this week's episode of Kyle XY, the teens at school either want to be on the list or not. This year's list is quite revealing and is an eye opener for one of the female characters. This episode offered us good character development and showed us how powerful Madacorp is. From the list to "mind over matter" and not forgetting XX getting a name, episode 2.03 delivered the goods.
The List
The idea behind the list is nothing new to TV. Most series featuring teens had an episode feature some type of list. However, what makes the XY list stand from the rest is that it had a profound impact on the characters. Hilary wants to re-virginize in order to not appear as the school's you know what on the list. Lori agrees to be part of the experiment. It was fun to watch them as Amanda what virgins do to not get bored! I doubt Lori and Hilary will stay re-virgins for long but at least they learned something about themselves in the process.
The list had a big impact on Amanda who finally learns that Charlie has been sleeping around. Hilary even admits to her that she slept with Charlie. Amanda connects the dots and finds out that what Kyle wanted to tell her is that Charlie was unfaithful. Will she be able to forgive Kyle? She better as I would like to see she and Kyle date. However, I have a hunch that it may be delayed by the arrival of XX.
The list also has Kyle understand that everyone is labeled, want it or not. In a voice over, Kyle lets us know how he labels everyone: Charlie, the cheater; Amanda, the betrayed; Declan and Lori; the heartbroken; Kyle; the extraordinary. He finally accepts his destiny.
Mind Over Matter
After searching Adam's files, Foss discovers what some "normal" people were able to accomplish. He decides that Kyle needs to understand the "mind over matter" concept. The path to control his mind over the matter was not an easy one, but he achieved it when it was important: to save a girl from a fire. This event clearly showed that Kyle is not like other teens. It was clear to us from the series premiere but Kyle hadn't fully embraced the fact he is different until this week's episode. It was a good idea for the show to have Nicole see Kyle walk out of the fire. Eve though Kyle says he isn't alone in this, he is. Someone needed to know a bit more about Kyle so he would get support in this adventure. Okay, he is not really alone since he has Foss and Brian but they don't care about him like the Tragers do.
Girl Meets Boy
Josh, who got a job at the coffee shop, meets a girl with whom he shares interests. He later finds that she has been beating him on an online game. Those two seem to be made one another. Will they become best buds and keep tabs on "alien" Kyle? It would be funny to see them become a conspiracy duo of sorts.
Girl Says Goodbye to Boy
Other than Charlie and Amanda breaking up (it wasn't official on screen but it was implied from the way she reacted at the list), Declan and Lori call it quits. It was written in the stars since episode 2.01 that this would happen. Declan has other things on his mind: Kyle's secrets. I do hope that they get back together as they were fun to watch. But before doing that, Declan must either accept he won't learn Kyle's secrets or he must find the truth. I'm afraid that if Declan doesn't find answers or accept the lack of, he'll implode.
XX Gets a Name... and a Past
XX started the episode having no name, not talking much, not doing much, not having a past or memories. Thanks to Madacorp's reprogramming, she gets a name (Jessi), learns to talk and do things, and is given memories and a life (hello sister Emily!). All this in what 24 hours? Madacorp sure has some great magic tricks and knows a lot about the brain to be able to reprogram someone so fast.
Ballantine (Madacorp's boss) tells Emily that she must use the new and improved Jessi to get close to Kyle and bring him in. The episode showed us again that XX seems to be more developed "power-wise" than Kyle. From Kyle's reaction during the bonfire, they do share some sort of bond as he sensed her presence on the beach. I can't wait to see them finally come face to face and talk. Will they understand from the start that they are alike?
It's clear that the reprogramming didn't work as she is remembering events from her "birth". I'm pretty sure she'll eventually be able to piece everything together. When so is the case, will she turn on Madacorp?
"The List Is Life" was a good episode and contained nice dialog with punchy lines. If all upcoming episodes are like this one, it will be a rocking season!
