Kevin Reilly is new entertainment prez at Fox

by Anna Johns, posted Jul 9th 2007 7:09PM
kevin reillyNot even two months after NBC booted Kevin Reilly out of his job as entertainment president, Fox has picked him up and placed him in the exact same position for that network. During Reilly's time at NBC, ratings didn't budge much, but he was also a champion for quality programs like Friday Night Lights.

Reilly is reuniting with former co-worker, Peter Liguori, who has been promoted to entertainment chairman at Fox. The two teamed up when they worked at FX and brought edgy shows such as The Shield and Nip/Tuck to that network. Fox evidently wants some of that mojo.

Reilly's first challenge is to get people to watch some of Fox's new shows, none of which he chose. I'm hoping he'll give a little love to Unhitched, the Farrelly brothers comedy that is by far the best thing Fox has going for it in the fall.

No, Jake. Let me atually add to something you just said....

"As far as critical acclaim though, most of Fox's shows that have garnered awards and acclaim are gone (Arrested development, Firefly) or are called 24."

21 Jump Street. The Simpsons. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. X-Files. In Living Color.

Granted, just about all of these shows are also gone. But - unlike the 2 you named - many of these garnered awards, acclaims, and a decent run in primetime.

Just adding some historical perspective, and probably showing that I agree with you. But of course, since my original comment was directed at Anna - and I used your comment as an example without clearly making that point - I can see where you might even view this comment as some sort of argument.

Apologies if you do. I think we do agree on alot.

Wow Jake. Appearently my _original_ comment rubbed you very much the wrong way. Any offense you may have taken, resulting in your need to trash every individual thought I have ... hey, I meant no offense. Apologies. Chill out.

Are you Dave D or Anna Johns? You never made a comment in the first place. Now you are quoting Anna? My first response to Anna was questioning whether or not Reilly could succeed, given Fox's history of trashy shows AND given that much of what makes FX work is because it is NOT prime time network TV, but cable. Since it is cable they do edgy things and get away with it because right now censors and parent/religious groups cant touch them. And look at the stink people made over Coupling over at NBC (an edgy show)(yes I know Dave D, Fox does not own NBC. This is what's called an example).

"Name me the number of Fox shows that run regularly on FX. The only difference between these two channels is that one runs over-the-air, and the other is cable only. You will never see The Shield on over-the-air in prime time."

Have you read any of my posts? You are agreeing with me. Maybe you need to go back and actually read my post before responding. I am saying that FX shows would not make it on Fox. I said this because of What Anna said that maybe the reason Reilly was hired was because of his previous work at FX. What you said makes no sense. You said:

"name me the number of Fox shows that run on FX"

and then you proceed to give an example of an FX show not making it on Fox:

"You will never see The Shield on over-the-air in prime time."

Do you know what you are even trying to argue here?

As for my second post, what I am saying is that as far as the TYPE of shows FX and Fox churn out, they are completely different. I was questioning, but hoping, that Reilly could bring that to Fox. Also, you are the one who brought in other networks to make a far fetched comparison. So my second post was also pointing out that your comparisons were ignorant. Just because Fox owns FX or ABC owns ABC Family or NBC owns CNBC doesn't mean they have the same type of programming. Far from it actually. I don't think we'll be seeing Madmoney, a CNBC show, air on NBC. Just like I don't think we'll ever see something like the Shield, which Reilly green lighted over at FX, make it on Fox (something you actually agreed with while trying to argue with me). The reason Newscorp owns Fox and FX is so they can provide different types of programming. So ownership is irrelevant.

Finally, when did Fox ever have mojo? If you actually reread Anna's post, she implies that Fox doesn't have it, FX does; Reilly was hired to bring the mojo over to Fox. Fox does have ratings. But as far as quality shows? I don't consider American Idol quality entertainment. I do consider it a ratings force. As far as critical acclaim though, most of Fox's shows that have garnered awards and acclaim are gone (Arrested development, Firefly) or are called 24.

Jake, here's what Anna said:

"The two teamed up when they worked at FX and brought edgy shows such as The Shield and Nip/Tuck to that network. Fox evidently wants some of that mojo."

Then came your first comment... both totally ignoring the fact that Fox owns both of these channels.

Name me the number of Fox shows that run regularly on FX. The only difference between these two channels is that one runs over-the-air, and the other is cable only. You will never see The Shield on over-the-air in prime time.

More to my point - Fox _had_ that mojo that Anna mentioned.

He can bring the quality to Fox by ordering up some more Firefly! Fox still owns the rights to it.

First of all, What comment? Secondly, Desperate Housewives, Grey's, Boston Legal, etc, would never be on ABC Family. I would argue that ABC is more like FX than Fox is. All Fox is right now is 5 shows: Prison Break, 24, House, Simpsons, and American Idol. Of those shows, only 24 and maybe Prison Break would fit with FX.

NBC like CNBC? I guess maybe if you are thinking of Deal or No Deal. lol.

One thing that worries me is that Fox is not FX. Fox has trashy unintelligent programming. While I hope he can bring that smart FX mojo to Fox, much of FX's appeal is the edgy, UNCENSORED and mature series. I don't think many of the great shows like Rescue Me and The Shield would fair well on prime time network TV. God forbid someone's child turns on Fox and sees a boob, hears a bad word, sees a meth addict or is exposed to edgy material a parent would actually have to explain. Now, if Reilly can bring shows like Arrested Development comedies (read: smart, subtle humor) and come up with some great dramas like Friday Night Lights (read:edgy topics with none of the profanity) Fox might actually be able to garner some critical respect (outside 24) to along with those great ratings.

Reilly's first task at Fox should be to grant a final meal, then pull the switch on 'Til Death.
