What would have happened if Drive had lived on

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Jul 11th 2007 12:43PM
DriveExecutive producers Tim Minear and Craig Silverstein were kind enough to spill the beans on what would have happened on Drive if FOX hadn't canceled the series.

Many fans were left wondering as only four of the six produced episodes aired earlier this year. FOX had planned on airing the two remaining episodes this summer but decided against it earlier this week.

Drive Fans had the chance to interview Minear and Silverstein earlier this week and shared with us the spoilers that both men gave. Here is a run down of what would have happened on Drive:

  • Sponsors for each team and character would differ and each would have had different motivations. John Trimble was his own sponsor. We would have learned that Wendy Patrakas's sponsors were an older couple who discovered that the infant child they adopted was actually Wendy's first child, whom she was told had died. Winston and Sean would have found out that their father was Winston's sponsor. However, it would have eventually been revealed that the real sponsor was Esteban Masferrer, Fernando's advisor, and that he wanted to use the race to take out father and sons so he could control the business. Ivy, Leigh, and Susan, were not sponsored and were chosen to race to liven up the competition.
  • Wendy eventually returns to Ohio to rescue Sam but ends up getting grabbed by Richard and forced to go back home. However, Ivy decides to go to Ohio and rescue mother and son. The new trio returns to the race. In a later episode, Ivy would have sacrificed herself for Sam.
  • Ellie's true evil and conniving nature would have been revealed. She was having an affair with Bill, the blue-eyed ground monitor working for the race. Bill would have ordered Ellie to break Rob out of a military brig so he could come back to the race.
  • It is possible that Rob and Leigh would have hooked up down the road.
  • John Trimble was not really sick. The medicine he took was making him sick.
  • Nothing was set in stone by episode six as to if Alex's wife was working with the race organizers. But from Minear's answer, it does seem that she was working with them and as early as when she met Alex.
Sadly, they don't reveal who would have won the race. Then again, maybe they don't know themselves as they probably left that open in case the series would have taken them in a different direction. They also say that if the series had lived on, each season would have seen a new race begin with old players taking new roles and new players being introduced.

Just finished watching the last 2 episodes and it left me wanting more. My whole family enjoyed it and we hate to see it end. People just don't know what they missed out on. I thought a cross country race was a brilliant idea. I could compare it to "Lost". Just the right amount of characters. Each with their own story... We're the loosers. Please reconsider. Maybe a different time slot would make all the difference in the world.

I watched the last two episodes today online. I am left wanting more. I would love to see this show come back even if it is F/X. Fox you should really listen to your audience. Evryone has a favorite person on the show and they want thier person to win the race. I had a few fav's on the show and wanted to see each of them come thru thier suffering to win, even if the only thing they won was their selfesteem.

If Fox would bring it back I would quit my job and come out there to help them with the show. I would love to see this show on the air for a long time. Look Fox, people didn't like the Simpson's or Married with Children when they first came out and you kept them on the air for a long time. Drive is like love and as the Beatles once sanged" Give Love a Chance". OK it was peace instead of Love but you get the point.

I just watched the 5th episode today at www.myspace.com/fox. Thanks for the bullets, but they don't do the show justice. I started watching the show from the first episode because an old friend was in this one and I wanted to get some background. I thought it was going to be a show with lots of car race shots. I like all of the twists and kept wanting to know more about the what's and why's that drive each of the characters to participate.

1 more thing.. nothing is explained above, so i dont know what you guys are so happy about.. 50% of the above bullets about how the show end were already aired on myspace.com/driveonfox they should have at least made it up.. there was at LEAST 2 more episodes to go to explain everything, they cant be summed up in a few sentences.. i would assume maybe 4 more episodes to finish the season

why all the compliments? fox flat out CANCELLED drive and lied about airing it, then lied about it being the FINAL (as in finale) 2 episodes.. fox should be ashamed of themselves for not airing it just because it didnt get enuf ratings.. too many things these days (movies/music) are looking for 1 hit wonders to make quick money.. how about u just let drive go on for the whole season and then decide if your going to do a second season.. what fox did is EXACTLY like if there was a concert and all the ppl showed up and then they got on the mic and said "sorry guys, only 10,000 showed up, we wanted 20,000, so its cancelled, go home" i hate u fox

Interesting bullet points, but I'm not sure the show would have survived a revelation of sponsors in that kind of fashion.

For me, part of the draw of the first four episodes was that there was some sort of big, shadowy Other that never shows itself, but still manages to manipulate the circumstances with amazing finess. (Same concept that made the original Blair Witch a draw.) In some ways it was sort of like Roman emporors trotting contestants through the colliseum -- some are compelled to fight at the emporor's whim, others volunteered for the show in order to gain the glory; but in the end, there's a wall around the arena that keeps the contestants from escaping, and the plot can be manipulated on the emporor's whim (gladiator doing too well? Release a couple extra lions, then).

Finding out that the individuals were getting themselves into this, or else being drawn into it by a soap opera of cheesy sponsorships, would have been a let-down.

I did not know if I would get interested in DRIVE, but after the first show, I was hooked, sort of like when LOST first arrived. I faithfully watched the few episodes aired, and was thrilled when newspaper announced DRIVE last 2 episodes would air July 4th...ok, set to see it. The 4th came and went with no DRIVE..Found it would air July 13th..ooops Friday the 13th, no DRIVE..just got on line and found notice it will air online free MON. JULY 16th..of course no time was announced...but I will search it out on Monday. Here's hoping.

Still think Fox should've shipped Drive over to F/X for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon marathon.

But the bullet points were good. Would've liked to have seen the show go on further.
