America's Got Talent - Top 20

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Jul 12th 2007 8:27PM
We haven't been reviewing America's Got Talent here at TV Squad this season. However, after watching last night's episode during which they selected the Top 20, I felt compelled to write about it. Why? Because I'm really disappointed. Actually, when I watched the show (especially near the very end), I had about the same facial reaction the "3 Redneck Tenors" had when they were told they wouldn't advance. So far this season, I didn't mind judges making questionable decisions at times since it didn't mean those contestants would be on the Top 20. However, last night, I expected them to make good decisions as the selected ones would have a 1 out of 20 chance to win a million.

I get that the show wanted a wide variety of acts in the Top 20 and that it meant not all our favorites would be in the Top 20. I also understand that they needed a few acts that would have people talking. But the judges clearly lost it last night (well, in reality, a few weeks ago), when selecting the Top 20. I need someone give me answers these two questions as I have no idea what a good answer is for either:
  • Is Boy Shakira really worth a million?
  • Is Kashif really a good Bollywood dancer and entertainer? Because if he is in the Top 20, he must be right?
I still can't believe people like the saxophone player and the 3 Rednecks Tenors didn't make it when people like Boy Shakira and Kashif did. It seems I'm not the only one as an online petition is promoting the boycotting of the show from now on as the two made it to the Top 20. A lot of (ex-)fans of the series are also leaving disappointed comments on the show's page. In the light of the Top 20 selection, maybe Sexy Techno Boy and Leonide (spelling?) should ask for a recount!

Actually, I wish that all AGT fans do watch and vote in the coming weeks. Boy Shakira and Kashif need to be booted off asap and it's only by not voting for them that we can show how disappointed we are in the judges decision. But then again, us watching and voting will give NBC ratings... it's a double-edge sword.

Do you think the judges did a good job when selecting the Top 20?

Edited on July 13 to add: The network just sent out a press release with the Top 20 contestant list.

I agree 100%! I was pissed when the 3 tenors and especially the Sax Player didn't go thru and the stupid fat boy shikira and and pakistan sorry dancer went thru. I know they had to have put them thru for ratings only...but it backfired since they sure didn't last very long did they? I am really hoping that Terry Fator wins it... He has a true talent of imitating any singer he wants and not very many people can do that. That is talent not just luck that you can just happen to be able to sing.

Ron G.: The winner won't be announced for a few more weeks. We still have a few more performance shows. Tonight we have the rest of the top 20. Next week, we'll get into the Top 10, etc.

Not only do I agree will all of those who believe the judges lost their minds, but I am EXTREMELY UPSET that they finished the show under another name. My DVR didn't record the results, and I STILL don't know WHO WON? Yahoo search doesn't even show a winner......Have they had one yet?

sure they have made some bad choices on who goes in, but does it really matter if the person u want to win is still in. that just makes it easier for ur person to win.

It seems clear to me that a requirement for moving past the top 20 for these acts is that they needed to sign some sort of paper before they could be allowed to move on.

This paper would basically state that the producers of NBC had some sort of proprietary right to own the material or rights of the act or at least have a claim to the gimmick.

Based upon who didn't advance, it appears clear that this is what happened to the Redneck Tenors being that it was one of the gimmicks that could easily be transferred.

The same can be said for the man with the talking rabbit. Such a shared ownership to that gimmick would be finanically destructive for him, whereas a singer like Butterscotch or athletic dancers would have little to lose.

I'm really happy to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. I was sitting watching it thinking 'this is a joke right?' Those two spots could have been given to one of the singers (who were all better then anything on American Idol this season), the second magician (I would have rather had the choice to have to choose between them), the three tenners (they were great!), or Lazy Legz.

Just, WTF. Really. I think it's time we got rid of the brits as judges. If they want to host a show, go back to Britan and host England's Got Talent.

I have a simple solution for everyone. Don't watch the show so we don't give the much needed ratings, an then go and vote online voting the idiots off. That is what I'm going to do.

Boy Shakira and Kashif must have already been millionaires, and spent it all on buying the votes of the judges. That's the only possible way they could even have made it to the prelims. The judges would have to be complete idiots to have picked them for nothing. The only other possible answer is, they are relations of the judges, or the judges are being blackmailed. It has to be something. Nobody could be that stupid.
