Kyle XY: Come to Your Senses

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Jul 13th 2007 9:01PM
Kyle XY(S02E05) ABC never planned to air all Kyle XY episodes this summer. However, the network was supposed to air the five first episodes but decided to remove XY from this week's lineup. Fortunately, I had enlisted a friend's help so I would get my XY fix every week even though ABC stopped caring. Thanks to said friend for taping the series for me. This change in my viewing schedule means that starting next week, you should expect my reviews around Wednesdays.

This week's episode finally had Jessi's world collide with Kyle's. I doubt that fans were surprised this week by the episode as most of us had already predicted part of what happened.

I took some time to re-read my last reviews and all comments to find what we had predicted here at TV Squad. We correctly predicted three main events that happened in this week's episode:

  • Adam's ring means something.
  • Stephen will be hired by Madacorp and not know what the company is all about.
  • Declan and Jessi will warm up to one another.
The ring

When I saw Kyle decide to give his ring to the pawn shop, I was 100% certain that it wouldn't stay there long as it was important for the mythology. Seeing that Ballantine bought the ring and wears it, means that it is indeed important. I'm pretty sure that it'll be the key to open a passage way, decipher a computer program or some text, or it'll be important in the controlling of XX and XY.

Speaking of Kyle trading his ring for the bracelet, the whole storyline brought Amanda and Kyle closer together. I sense that they two will definitely try to date down the road. Kyle is a genuine guy who really wants to do what's best for his friend and family no matter the cost. I'm afraid that Madacorp and co. will use that to their advantage.

Stephen did get a job at Madacorp and he, as expected, has no idea Ballantine wants Kyle. The man behind Madacorp sure is resourceful and must have tons of people (or cameras) looking on XY's life. Not only did he know the ring was at the pawn shop, but he knew Stephen was out of a job (then again maybe Madacorp bought Stephen's company so he would look for a new job and apply for a job at Madacorp, meaning that he would get closer to Ballantine) and offered him a job, surely to have another way in the Tragers family. What will happen if Stephen invites his new boss for supper just as Jessi exits Nicole's office?

Declan and Jessi sitting in a tree...

This episode proved my rant about Declan being superfluous wrong. His meeting with Jessi brought Declan's character back to the forefront. He'll be her way in the circle of friends and she'll change his mood. Maybe, he'll even stop hunting for answers about Kyle's whereabouts... until he figures out that there is something wrong with XX too! Will the "new" Declan go back to being friends with Kyle?

Again this week, the show was teasing us by having XX and XY be close, feel someone was there, yet, not meet. If they do that a third time, it'll start to grow old and annoying. But having them "sense" one another for a second time was interesting. I really can't wait to see them come face to face.

Kyle's abilities

This week, Kyle was able to control his ability without the need of a tragedy. However, it was enhanced by the fact that he thought Amanda was in danger. It's a nifty idea to have Kyle be able to control his senses. I wonder when he would want to focus in on taste. Maybe during a cook off? I can't wait to see Jessi show us more of her abilities and how she controls them.

Other scenes of interest
  • Stephen playing Josh's video game.
  • Stephen and Nicole plotting the bad cop/worse cop scenario.
  • Lori and Kyle on a stake out.
  • Kyle telling Amanda's mother that he knows she sold the bracelet.
  • Jessi coming in for her first session with Nicole.

Best lines of the week

I'll try to list a few of the best lines of the week in each review from now on. This week, I think Josh wins the contest:
  • "You're worried about some whack job breaking in, but inviting them in is no big deal?"
  • "Hey just cause I can't smoke pot doesn't mean I can't smoke you."

(Kyle XY - S02E05) Do you want Declan and Jessi to become a couple?

I just found it amusing that Stephen's player name on the first person shooter was Itchy Trager Finger.

Am I the only one who thinks kyle would probably be good in bed? No?

....anyway, I agree with you on the sensing thing, it's cool but if they do it again I'd be seriously annoyed.

I could do with out the whole Declan Jessi story line.

I think the female investigator/Jessi's fake sister (i forgot her name) is actually warming up to Jessi just by the way she stroked her bang to try to comfort her about seeing Nicole. I think what's going to happen is she's going to be Jessi's version of Foss and begin protecting her from Madacorp.

I thought this episode of Kyle XY more of a transitional episode: bringing XX into the Trager household and setting up Steven within the Madacorp family. I missed seeing Foss this week and was dismayed that Kyle gave up his ring so easily. If he came back within such a short period of time to redeem the ring, why couldn't he have gotten the money to retrieve Amanda's bracelet without giving up his one inheritance from Adam? And since he was Adam's heir and Adam was obviously wealthy, you're telling me he couldn't have gotten the money to buy back Amanda's bracelet without pawning his own ring? I just thought that plotline was weak, as was having Declan attracted to Jessie. Not the best episode of Kyle XY S2 to date, but I'm still in for the count.

I agree, the family lives in the 70s or soemthing. I used to think it was because of the mother, but not it's just insane.

And just some of the storylines are a little weird, I don't know, some of the stuff just doesn't feel like it would fit even in a super hero universe.

I thought the whole pot storyline was extremely contrived, and pretty unrealistic to boot:
a) Why would Stephen keep a bag of weed for "years" in a shoebox near the front of the top shelf of their closet?
b) Wouldn't pot kept that long be completely "stale" like any other organic material put in a closet for years?
c) This family is WAY more permissive than mine ever was. Both kids regularly consume alcohol without punishment, and Josh gets off with a simple grounding after digging through his parents' room, stealing their stash, and smoking it? Right...

Don't even get me started on how unrealistic Declan's character is this season.

Two weeks ago I was excited to see where the story was headed...but after this week? Meh.
