America's Got Talent: Performance Episode #1

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Jul 17th 2007 11:53PM
America's Got Talent(S02E06) Yes, the network does label this as episode 2.06 even if we've seen countless hours of America's Got Talent so far this season. After the Top 20 selection fiasco, I needed to keep watching and see if America would show the judges how wrong they were by selecting Boy Shakira and Kashif in the top performers' list. I also needed to hear the Hoff give bad, but realistic, comments to both performers as he was the only one who really saw them as they were and that they didn't deserve to be moved on to later rounds.

So after the required recap of past episodes, the first performance episode begins. Ten of the Top 20 finalists will compete, including Kashif (pictured left). It seems that they decided to separate him from Boy Shakira as it would have been too hot to handle! America will vote for their favorite, and the five acts from this performance group with the most votes will move on to the next round, the Top 10.

Here we go with my 2 cents about each performance.

Johnny LonestarJohnny Lonestar: His act didn't wow me. It was about the same as in the previous rounds plus throwing his rope around the judges. It is not a million dollar act. He should have added objects, pets or people to throw his rope at or around. Piers said it was fun, yes it was, but he couldn't be the main performer of a show, he would be an act amongst others.

IrwinJulienne Irwin: Based on the previous rounds, I'm not sure I would have put her in the Top 20. She wasn't bad in the previous rounds but wasn't perfect. She was a bit pitchy, maybe it was because she was singing a cappella. Tonight, with a band and a song that fit her style more, I thought that she performed well. She sang the song well and moved on stage properly. I agree with Sharon that Julienne is a positive role model for young girls. Based on tonight's performance, she should move on.

JamesKevin James: From the start, this magician has been one of my favorites. I don't get why he doesn't have his own act somewhere in Las Vegas yet. Again tonight, he started off big: good music, entertaining set up, creepy magic trick with body parts, and humor! The end was a let down (was there even an end?). I kept waiting for a big reveal and it never came. I agree with the Hoff that there was no pay off at the end. I hope he does return as he is really promising.

HatcherRobert Hatcher: Singing a woman's song was a risky choice, especially a Whitney Houston song from when she could still sing properly. He didn't do too bad but I kept comparing it to the original, so it was somewhat a let down. His performance in the chorus was not powerful enough per my taste. However, I think he has what it takes to be at lest in the Top 5 of his group.

Johnny Come LatelyJohnny Come Lately: The band performed "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." It's not their fault but there were too many lights coming on and off during their performance. I thought it was a good performance from the band. They were able to play the song with different styles. Sadly, no enough band interaction with themselves or the crowd. I agree with Piers that it would be interesting to hear them sing something contemporary. I expect they will be in the Top 10.

KashifMohammad Kashif: This was the act I was the most eager to see. Especially since I wanted to see if he would prove all of us wrong and show us that Piers and Shannon aren't crazy. To make the act a little less cheesy they tried to add background dancers, dress the man in stylish clothes, and add some lightning effect. Kashif is not a good performer no matter the dancers, lights, etc. Finally, Piers came to his senses and Xed the Bollywood-wannabe dancer and told him he has no talent and personality. Why did you let him through Piers?!?! I'm glad the Hoff reminded Piers he voted Kashif through. It is not a million-dollar act. I don't think it's even a hundred-dollar one. Please America, don't vote him through.

ButterscotchButterscotch: Quite an interesting song choice, and she put an unusual beat box twist to this classy song. Her act is quite original and she performed it well. I agree with Piers that the outfit wasn't the best choice, especially with that song. The Hoff is right, it did seem effortless. I'm not ready to say she'll win the competition yet but she should move on.

SideswipeSideswipe: We haven't seen much of them in the previous episodes compared to some of the other contestants. They had an entertaining act tonight but it was missing some flare to it per my taste. I agree with Piers that this looked like their other acts and that it may be difficult for them to change their act enough for this show. I'm not sure they can add dancing as suggested by Piers. It wouldn't be the same act. As the Hoff said, if they are moved on, it'll most likely be because of their abs. I think they shouldn't move on since they can't wow us much more.

RomeroManuel Romero: I don't recall much his previous performances so I have nothing to compare him to. His performance tonight felt a bit flat for me. He was a bit pitchy and it looked like he was not believing enough in the song (it was without emotion). I agree 100% with Piers that he needs to sing a song he will be able to own and show us he is the best. Manuel was not too bad but he needs to step up. He will definitely move on to the next round, partially thanks to his looks.

The GlamazonsThe Glamazons: I've been rooting for them since their audition. They sing well, are entertaining, and are showing America that "big" women can look good and be entertaining. Again tonight, they showed they have pipes and can entertain us. Their dance moves weren't very elaborate though. Thanks Piers for telling them that "big" can be sexy, beautiful, and talented.

My Top 5 tonight is, in order of appearance: Julienne Irwin, Kevin James, Johnny Come Lately, Butterscotch, and The Glamazons. What is yours?

Feel free to let us know what you thought of tonight's performances by replying to this post.

i voted (in the tv squad poll here) for johnny come lately 'cause i think they're pretty good for 15-yr olds...when i was that age i watched a lot of local, young bands and they weren't nearly as put together as these guys (and girl). i disagree w/ the notion that they should do more contemporary music. to me that =play pop punk or emo (or is that the same thing?), which...i thank god that i wasn't a teenager in the last decade for a reason..what awful music to grow up w/.

anyway, kevin james disappointed me. i think he was great in his past performances, but this one was really boring. i hope if he continues he steps it up.

the glamazons are kinda cool, but i think their best performance remains the first.

kashif, i didn't mind during his first performance since it was something different, but...yeah he sucks kinda. he should be eliminated swiftly along w/ the ridiculous "boy shakira"...i mean c'mon..is clumsily bopping your hips from side-to-side while impersonating a skanky female singer really worth $1 million...?

sideswipe i had high hopes for since i LOVE martial arts, but they're getting kinda boring.

johnny lonestar...while i like that he adds variety, he best add something new, 'cause that's also not worth $1 million.

all the singers...bah. i would be perfectly satisfied if simply singing were banned from the competition all together. a) if i wanted to watch singers that all sound the same i'd watch american idol (save for the one guy that sounds like sting...at least he sounds a little different...all the others are some derivitive of r&b or country...yawn) and b) the singers, imo, clearly don't have to step it up as much as the other acts. i mean the others are expected to add something new or do something different. the singers just pick a different song and do the same exact thing. boring.

that leaves butterscotch who has something MORE than singing. she's very unique and cool and i'd like to see her go a long way in this competition.

1. Kevin James - lots of potential...if he makes it through, I can't wait to see what he does next.

2. Glamazons - entertaininment only...they aren't REAL good singers, but you let that slide because they keep your attention...

3. Butterscotch - glad she let her hair down. She looked really good last night and I agree with Sharon...I hated the trumpets at the beginning.

4. Sideswipe - can't help but like these guys.

5. Julienne - need a kid and she's pretty good.

I love Kashif and I voted for him last night. I know he's terrible, but there is something likable about him. Welcome the new Sanjaya.

See "Sublime- Doin' Time" for a VERY similiar version to what she did.

Except that sublime is a whole band. Her talent is not arrangement. If this was america's got originality they all would be in trouble.

To my mind, Butterscotch has already received exposure enough to land a record deal, regardless of how well she does in the competition. Her downfall on the show may well be that just too few people like/appreciate beatbox. (It's an easy talent to disregard and few are aware of just how difficult it is.) That said, she is a magnificent talent with an outstanding range and a unique sound not heard elsewhere in the competition. I'm rooting for her, but I don't think she needs to win in order to be successful. She makes the other singers look like, well, just singers.

The problem I have with Butterscotch is the same I had with Blake Lewis on AI. It's good, impressive even, but it's NOT too original.

She's going his route of taking other groups versions of songs and basically doing that one.

See "Sublime- Doin' Time" for a VERY similiar version to what she did.

The contestants are only somewhat interesting, but I like the addition of the X-Factor's intro shots for each contestant, where they have them in front of a bunch of lights and all that. I was hoping they'd copy that for Idol, but, at least they copied it for something here in the states. :)

WHY are you people inside watching this crap!?!? As soon as the guy with batons wasn't moved on I said SCREW THIS.
And Hasselhoff as a judge!?!? Have you SEEN Baywatch?
Sharon Osborne? who the hell is she to be judging people.
Dare I say Piers is just the Simon Cowell wannabe? I checked out his credentials. Maybe it this was America's Got Gossip he'd qualify, but otherwise get the hell off the panel.
This is just pure CRAP and a sure sign of the mindless tripe we've been watching since the first Survivor. This is truly why it is called an Idiot Box.

First, I still preferred the way they ran the show last season to the way they're doing it this time around.

I was so disappointed with Kevin James's act tonight particularly after they said last week that Anthony Reid's water escape wasn't good enough. What was that business with the beer anyway?

Johnny Lonestar's act isn't bad, it's just not great. Almost a century ago Will Rogers was the toast of Broadway as a rope twirler but he had the good sense to insert topical jokes while he was twirling.

The less said about Kashif the better except to say that Leonid the Magnificent, on his worst day, is better than this guy on his best. Kashif's act is little better than a dance version of kareoke.
