Jon Lovitz Beats Up Andy Dick

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 17th 2007 12:05PM

Andy DickA lot of people have wanted to do this for a long time, and now Jon Lovitz has done it. It also brings up something from the past I wasn't aware of.

At L.A.'s Laugh Factory the other night, Lovitz and Andy Dick got into an argument about Phil Hartman's death and Andy Dick's drug use. Five months before Brynn Hartman shot Phil and herself to death, Dick allegedly gave her cocaine at a house party that Lovitz also attended. Brynn Hartman had been sober for ten years, and now Lovitz blames Dick giving her the cocaine as the reason why she got hooked again and killed Hartman and herself five months later.

According to witnesses, Lovitz picked Dick up several times and smashed his head and face into the bar, causing him to bleed. This isn't the first time they've had words. When Lovitz took over for Hartman on NewsRadio, he told Dick "I wouldn't be here now if you hadn't given Brynn that cocaine." And then last year Dick confronted Lovitz at a restaurant, taking drinks off the table and saying he put the "Phil Hartman hex" on him and that he was going to die next.

Yikes.

When Phil died Andy Dick lost his mentor and surrogate father. Jon always called Phil his 'brother.' You throw the two of them together on a TV show where one of them (Jon) is added in to take the others' (Phil) place and then sit back to watch the sparks fly. Both of them will never get over the death of this man. Andy still feels responsible for Phil's death because, besides giving Bryn the coke, he also never kept his promise to Phil to go with Bryn to AA meetings. You can read a sober interview with Andy here: http://tinyurl.com/2dusbq It was done not long after Jon took over for Phil. I don't think Andy will be on this earth much longer and am surprised he has survived this long. The altercation between them was a long time coming, imho. Phil was a wonderful man and is sorely missed by these two guys besides a whole bunch of others. Including me. What's done is done and placing blame won't bring him back.

"Seriously, what is wrong with our culture to accept this type of
barbaric behavior... Jon Lovitz slammed a man's head into a bar 4 or 5 times and people are saying this is ok?"

There are times, wouldn't you agree, when the only thing a man can do is whip the tar out of some mouthy (Andy, ahem) Dick.
Savage, barbaric? Well, I'd then suggest that maybe the next time - and heaven forbid it - some terrorist organization foists death and devastation on innocent civilians, we should heed our P.C. pal HacksawSection 8.
A violent response? Never, you nasty ruffians! Instead, send the proper thank you note. And, please, include in the missive that "you
hope none of the terrorists were injured while doing their religious
duty"...

14. Seriously, what is wrong with our culture to accept this type of barbaric behavior while praising a man for doing this?

I'm not trying to stick up for Andy Dick by no means, that guy has his own issues but obviously Jon Lovitz has some issues of his own considering this whole Hartman family wipeout thing happened way back in the 90's. I guess I can understand the situation a little better if Andy actually gave Phil Hartman (not his wife) but Phil Hartman cocaine and he died that night. Then it would be safe to say Andy was somewhat directly responsible for Phil's death but that is certainly not the case.

People need focus blame on the root of the problem. Phil Hartman's wife was nuts and she killed him. On drugs or not, anyone that goes to the extreme of killing someone probably isn't playing with a full deck and I recommend anyone who supports physical harm to another human being as acceptable to seriously get some psychological help.

There is something truly wrong with our culture.

No it in't Andy Dicks fault that Mr. and Mrs Hartman are dead by horrible circumstance.

If I were their friends and felt the way Mr.Lovitz did then...I can understand why he went off on Andy.

I am sure that Andy will now sue him though so, in the end of course violence will not win....even if it felt good to do it....and think you get away with it.............Ask OJ Simpson

I am only taking the time to comment on this topic b/c Andy happens to be a friend of mine for quite some time. No, he is not perfect, yes he has his demons (which he at least unlike many of our beloved young celebs does NOT deny) and he IS an incredibly talented and creative man. What is most pathetic in this incident is that you all have the time to sit here and comment... For all of you that commented that he only gets attention b/c people continue to give it to him...guess what my friend...you were the FIRST to give him more attention on this matter. How many of you have ever sat with Andy on a personal level and had a discussion with him? How many of you live a 100% clean life, no drugs, no alcohol...

Celebs are celebs b/c all of YOU log on to sites, buy mags and obsess over their daily lives. Live under the microscope for a second...Remember that night you had to much to drink and made an a** out of yourself??? We all have them...some more than others...BUT, now imagine everyone in America got to see pics of you drunk, read about in the papers, hear it on the news etc.

Andy is not responsible for anyone's death. People make choices to party. I've been around plenty of parties and it goes down like this..."hey, do you want some (drug of choice)???" This is where you say yes or no. People decide for themselves what to do...

Why, oh why, weren't there video or phone cameras at the club to take pictures of this auspcious event? They would be the most watched videos on the Internet since Paris Hilton's sex video.

Jon, a MILLION thanks! But please alert the media if you plan on doing it again.

Your newest fan,

Gary D.

Jon - you're a true friend. It must be nauseating having some puke coming at you when your friend perished. I would've done the same thing!

Of COURSE violence isn't the best recourse, but I challenge anyone to not be compelled to violence when you 1) feel like someone recklessly enabled/encouraged someone else's relapse into addiction with tragic consequences, and 2) made a statement that made light of said circumstances.

Andy Dick did both of those, and, when asked to apologize, denied, acknowledged with a stupid excuse, and then went off on some ridiculous sidetrack. WTH would you ask someone to be in your movie at a time like that?

If it happened like Jon Lovitz said, *I'D* want to take a crack at him.

I'm surprised people aren't lining up outside AD's house daily to beat him up.
