What did you think of Victoria Beckham?

victoria beckhamI really didn't want to like Victoria Beckham. In photos, she never smiles. She is always impeccably dressed and frighteningly skinny. She was Posh Spice, but she's more famous for marrying David Beckham. She always seemed like a bitch, quite frankly. But, I am embarrassed to say that I found her adorable after watching last night's special, Victoria Beckham: Coming to America.

First, let's talk about the problems with the show. Some of the little adventures she went on were awfully contrived. I think her American personal assistant was a set-up and she was the mechanism for setting up other situations that producers were hoping would become funny. Examples? Lunching with ladies in Beverly Hills, experiencing an earthquake with a quake specialist, and throwing out the first pitch at a Dodgers game. I really didn't think these little gimmicks were necessary because she's pretty damn funny on her own.

I'm not sure about the meeting with Perez Hilton, who works out of a coffee shop in LA. Perez seemed quite shocked that Victoria Beckham was coming to see him. He honestly didn't seem prepared to meet the person he's been making snarky remarks about for years. And Victoria definitely won out in that meeting- her sense of humor about not eating or smiling in front of cameras was great. It's funny, because in all the photos you see of her, she seems to take herself so seriously but she really doesn't. As she said at the beginning of the show, David's hot and she's funny.

Maybe I've had the wool pulled over my eyes, but Victoria Beckham seemed like a genuinely nice person who really centers herself around her husband and children. She knows she's high maintenance about fashion and she laughs about it. I also liked that we saw just the smallest hint of bitchiness whenever someone mentioned her husband being 'hot' or asked her about David Beckham. I'm sure we were given a rosy view of Victoria Beckham, but even if she is a bitch, there's no hiding that sense of humor and wit. That makes her more likable than Paris Hilton for sure.

While watching, I collected a few of her best one-liners on various topics:

Rental House: "It looks like a giant, dusty ice cube."

Paparazzi: "Did anybody see that photographer? I am sure it was one of those lads from 'N Sync."

Lounging: "I reckon this is what Paris Hilton does every single day."

Assistant: "It's good that she thinks I'm kind-of normal."

Driver's manual: "We need to translate this into English."

Getting pulled over by police: "I was completely shocked and devastated because... I was wearing flat shoes."

Crazy woman at DMV wearing dog slippers: "I love your slippers. Those are fierce."

Before facing photographers: "Let me get myself miserable before we go out."

House hunting: "It's exhausting being fabulous."

Matt - you make a good point about David Beckham. I would trade places with him for a day or two. In fact, the only reason I watched this show was because I'm a soccer fan (I have tickets to LA Galaxy on August 5th!). I wanted to see the other players on the Galaxy, maybe show some practicing, etc. Instead there was one hour of Victoria going shopping.

I'm shocked that there's an audience for this type of thing. I actually lost respect for David Beckham from watching this show.

Victoria is very funny. If you go to Youtube.com she and her husband David are on one of 'Ali G's' talk show - raising money for charity - and she was very funny.

Derek - I really think you should lighten up. Nobody is looking to Posh as some sort of role model for America. As a reality show goes, this was one of the best. She played her part as a snobby english woman perfectly and it made for good Television. Also, Im sure any guy would want to live vicariously through David Beckham as well. Don't even try to tell me otherwise.

Hmm. I've noticed that the positive comments on here are all from female viewers. I think maybe you're living vicariously through Victoria Beckham...

I'm amazed that anybody was fooled by her talk of not caring about money. Actions speak louder than words. She was rude to anybody she viewed as "beneath her". Consider how she treated her assistant, or the guy at the DMV.

Making a self-deprecating comment about being snotty doesn't give you a free pass to act snotty. Grow up!

I loved Victoria Beckham ! She showed that she is a human being with substance and not just a pretty face. She showed this when she was with the ladies of Beverly Hills who kept talking about money, money, money, and Victoria, evidently, was not comfortable with that. Both David and Victoria appear to be well rounded, down to earth people connected to what is, really, important. There does not seem to be any phoniness to their character. Their nature comes through even through the cameras. God bless David and Victoria and their little ones. Welcome to America and do not change!

She adds nothing to the cultural dialogue, she spends money like it was water in the Pacific, and she's not a good physical role model for young women.

And finally, none of these so-called Spice Girls have left anything more than a bland taste my mouth.

She's a stick with a boob job and a weird haircut.

She is extremely OVER RATED and we need to come up with a new work for her husband. Overrated just doesn't do it justice. He has to be the most overrated person ever on the face of the earth. Neither of them should be recognized!

Just one funny, but very ill-intended remark. :)

I'm from HUngary, and one of my favorite bloggers - who does the same in HUngary on television that you guys do - always, I mean ALWAYs calls her the Chicken Legged Woman, whose sight only should require viewer discretion and "MA" rating, because children could suffer a lifetime long mental health disorder.
