Toons pushin' products - VIDEO

underdogI was sitting around thinking, because I really had nothing better to do, and I wondered why you don't see cartoon characters acting as pitchmen for different products much anymore. If you're nostalgic for the days when 'toons weren't afraid to put their names behind different products, you might enjoy the following videos.

First of all, Yogi Bear tells us all about OK Cereal from Kellogg's (Kellogg's was also the main sponsor on the Yogi Bear Show). I guess having your face on the box makes you a natural spokesperson for the product. Note how the announcer pronounces the word "proteins" as "pro-tee-ans."

Here's another cereal ad, this one for Cheerios and featuring Underdog. In the ad, Simon Bar Sinister's diabolical new weapon "takes the O out of Cheerios," leaving them void of their "Cheerios power." That's right, Cheerios gets its power from empty space. That, and pro-tee-ans.

Another cereal commercial? Sure, why not? This one features Bullwinkle J. Moose, and once again the narrator can't help but tell us about the pro-tee-ans. The next time all you coastal readers are surfing and enjoying a bowl of Cheerios simultaneously, which I can only assume is something you do all the time, remember who started the trend.

Finally, Fred, Pebbles and Wilma for Welch's grape jelly. Never before have I had the scientific method of grape jelly flavor-sealing explained to me in such detail. If memory serves, Fred was fired as a spokesman immediately afterward for revealing Welch's secret process.

Toons pitching product is entertaining to adults, but we don't see much of it anymore because of its impact on kids. After Joe Camel, people finally started to crack down and voice their concerns about pitching stuff to kids, especially using cartoons. Now there's a crack down on cereal advertising in particular. It had to happen sometime.

Possibly the most bizarre example of cartoon pitchmen would be Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble shilling for Winston cigarettes. If you don't believe me, you can check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqdTBDkUEEQ

In fairness, The Flintstones originally ran in prime time, and was not at first intended as a children's series. Still, it's just weird to see it.
