Chronicle campus scenes to be revised in wake of Virginia Tech shootings

Thomas DekkerThe Sarah Connor Chronicles, a new drama that continues where the Terminator films left off (well, Terminator 2: Judgment Day to be exact) will hit FOX midseason, but at least one scene will be changed before we see it.

The series focuses on Sarah Connor and her son John, the young boy who will grow up to lead the battle against the machines. Sarah's duty is to protect her son from harm, but in one scene, John is attacked at his school. Executive producer Josh Friedman had explained, prior to the massacre at Virginia Tech, that the scene was central to the series as a whole: school is the one place where a parent cannot absolutely protect a child.

The scene will be revised, but to what extent is unknown. It also brings up the question as to what responsibility, if any, a creator has when creating fictional scenes that have, or could, happen in real life. I also wonder just how similar the school scene was to the mass shooting in Virginia, and if we, the home viewers, would have even made the connection.

Some people are eternally offended. Nothing that anyone does will make them happy. So they should leave it as it is, if it's that important. But instead they'll cater to the whiners and the haters in hopes of getting those three extra viewers...

This reminds me of when they were saying that "Invasion" was too soon after Hurricane Katrina. Ultimately, nobody really cares.

I saw the screener. And while I was surprised at the violence in the school, I never connected it to Virginia. I actually thought more of Columbine. But the violence in Terminator and 2 (3 was junk) was always very appalling... bystanders getting mowed down, whole stations of cops killed, stepmom taking a blade through the head. I thought it was in fitting with the films (not that a lot of the rest of the show did...)

Hm... I think if it's "mid season" which should be January 2008, enough time has passed.

Besides, the scene shows a TERMINATOR cutting his leg open to get a gun out.

If THAT is supposed to be in any way similar to the Virginia Tech shootings then... I honestly can not come up with a good comparison. Changing the scene is just totally stupid. I can only think of one reason to change it and that is to not remind the people who were involved in the shooting of what happened to them.

But that's just ridiculous. If they are still traumatized, which I imagine they are considering what happened to them, I don't really think they watch Fox and especially nothing that's Terminator-themed. Anyone who watches something like that should "maybe" expect there to be guns and violence around a boy, age 17, in highschool. Because, you know, he's the second lead character on that show. I mean it's friggin Terminator. Anyone who's still hit by flashbacks to shootings would simply not turn on TV at all anyway with all the violence on.

The screener leaked, and I might have watched it.


It's nothing like Virginia. Going any further would spoil it, but it is not at all like Virginia Tech, nor any other school shootings. It's actually a very short, but important scene.
